Umm, is it meant to be in the way that it's shown? Is the person supposed to see the palm side of my hand? And when saying 'P' in sign language, do I always point right with my index finger & thumb as I point down with my ring finger?
Learning because of switched at birth. Before the show I would have been too intimidated to talk to a deaf person. But now I realize that just because someone can't hear, doesn't mean I can't talk to them :) I wish learning asl was required in schools :P
A bit confused because I have seen it both ways: for "J" and "Z" should I make a backwards letter so that it is seen by the other person correctly? Thanks!
It's amazing. I'm 21 now and I learned the alphabet when I was 7/8 and still remember it for the most part. There were about 5 letters I had off but I'm wondering if there's more than 1 way to sign the alphabet...
@TheAlexamary it doesn't matter, you should use your dominant hand (the one your write with) the letters still look the same even though they are opposite :)
@SmartHandsCA Also, how do you show that a letter has repeated? For instance if I wanted to finger spell the word call, I would do C-A-L-L, but how do I show that there were 2 L's?
@TheAlexamary you would just move your hands slightly to the right if you are right handed or slightly to the left if you are left handed. Don't bounce your hand, just shift it slightly.
this may seem like a silly question, but as a hearing person trying to learn from scratch...do these signs relate to the signer having their hand turned to themselves, or is it how the other person views them??? eg for 'w' is my palm to me, or outwards to the person i'm signing to?
@hindsy1410 great question! The palm (in most letters) should be facing the person you are signing to. Your hand should always feel comfortable. For example, the letter P, you thumb should be facing you and palm down.
I forgot how to do q and f but now I know but it's like supposed to be a song and like the only thing with the letter x is xylophone so I was laughing I don't know why
When signing the letter, should I use the right hand or the left? Because I'm right handed but some letters like G (for example) don't look correct when I use my right hand.
this is a really helpful video! thanks so much for posting.
quick question - when I do the signs (either for letters or actual words), are my hands supposed to face inward or outward? e.g. when I do the sign for "A", should my palm be facing me or should it be facing outward?
For the letter a your palm should be facing away from you but for letters h, and p your palm should be facing towards you. Your hand should feel comfortable when signing the letters.
I'm having a hard time signing certain letters like G and P. Are you supposed to rotate our hand so the outer part shows? Or do you show the palm side like most of the other letters?
I think it's funny; I'm a user of Dutch Sign Language (Nederlandse Gebarentaal), and I think it's rather funny that ASL uses a sign for "T" that resembles a very obsceen sign in NGT...
This Is Really Hard To Do With Your Right Hand Because Then Your Learning It Like Backwords, Undersatnd What I Mean ? Sorta Kinda ?? Or Is It Just Me ? Haha Im Weird

I know the asl is different, country to country but would a deaf person still understand what I was trying to "say" if I did the american version, to let say the british...
@Cassandralovesmakeup there are different sign languages in different countries. In Britain they use BSL (British Sign Language) and it is different from ASL.
I am 17 and deaf in one ear. Losing hearing in the other. I would like to learn sign language while I'm still able to hear but I am a little intimidated when I see others who can do it fluently and I barely know my ABCs...
@ne014x Sign language is just like any other languages where you will find regional differences. Just think, if you are in one State you might order a 'pop' whereas in another you might order a 'soda' it depends on where you grew up how you would say it. It's the same with sign language.
