She doesn't have great breath control. She took too many catch breaths, and paused in awkward places. WIth some training though, I think her voice has the potential to be really beautiful
Wow, most times when people post community/regional/whatever productions of shows, they're embarrassingly bad; this one proved me wrong. This woman blew me away. What a voice! Really, really impressed.
I love this song too!! It's so funny that when I did this play the girls would be onstage singing background and the guys would be backstage singing them too on the mics lol Everybody loved singing it
This Mother reminds me a lot of the Mother that was with me when I did it. I checked the name though, it's not her. Haha, one time, the alternate was on and completely changed the lyrics so it was "There was a time when you were the one that I cared for." Haha, we were laughing so hard.
The woman who played Mother has a superb voice. And the wind was a nice add-on to emplasize the song. The chorus with the "Ah"s though was off-pitch with a few distinct voices. Other than that, this song was fantastic.
WOW. that was very, very good. she does have such great control over her entire range, marvelous characterizations (there could have been a little more defiant power towards the end, but thats ok), simply beautiful. the wind effect was also beautiful - was this in an outdoor theatre? i do agree about the "ah"s being a little weak and strange, but thats all right. mother totally owned this song.
Love the wind... i can see her own a cliff over looking the ocean (yes i know she is outside). She does an AMAZING job, literally amazing. Bringing the chorus out ruins this number. This number is all about her realization that she can stand alone and be strong... she needs to alone and strong onstage.
the girl who plays mother is VERY talented! her acting was great and her singing was amazing! perfect! but i didn't like the chorus.. otherwise, unbelievable!
I thought she was quite good. She certainly did not belt the entire song. She saved it for about midway through. And I heard very little pitchiness from the soloist (Mother), it seemed to be coming from the chorus.
Actually, she doesn't belt the entire song. I agree, there is the occasional pitch issue but, really, you are the one that kind of overreated. Breath. She wasn't complete shyte. Compared to some of the performances I've heard of this song, she's a goddess.
Dude, I saw both Marin Mazzie and Donna Bullock do Mother on Broadway, and they blow this woman out of the water.
Mazzie and Bullock are "real talent". This is a moderately talented regional performer who is singing a role that she doesn't quite have the range or technique to do.
When you see something live the experience is completely different. I don't think it's fair to judge a live performance to a video. I think this song should be different from performer to performer and you should not expect the same thing from every person that sings the song. She's on pitch, phrasing is great, she's got great control of her head and belt is simply great. So I don't see what's wrong with that is what I should have said
In the end it's all subjective and will change from person to person. I saw a clip of a lady with an insane lisp doing it and at first I thought it was a joke and then found out that it wasn't and ppl were arguing with me telling me that she was really good.
This is great!!! :D What a beauty.

Awful directing choice to bring the chorus onstage. And to use a fan during this scene...

@MrJ52595 I would usually agree, but I think she was trying to use her breath as a dramatic device.

She has a pretty voice, but she started the song too big and had nowhere to build to... And her wig is hideous.

A little pitchy on the head/mix parts, but this was really a pleasure to listen to. Such a strong, full belt -- Reminds me of Betty Buckley's.

Holy COW!!! What a wonderful voice! I agree, the wind blowing adds a great 'something extra' to the performance! :)

This is one of my favorite songs in Ragtime. It is so gorgeous. My school just did it. It was so fun.

ummmmm.... the woman who played mother is an amazing talent and fits the part of mother perfectly

Good tempo. Fits the mood of the song better than the tempo used in the original.

WOW - she sang this song amazingly. I actually like her adaption of this song better then the Soundtracks!!

Phrasing all over the place, serious pitch issues, unable to do anything but belt, and let's not even talk about the overacting.....

No, she didn't just belt--and when she didn't, she was dreadful.

I think you're just some idiot who can't see real talent when its in front of you. This is one wonderful interpretation of this song.

There's a video of Marin Mazzie doing this song on YouTube--a handheld cellphone vid. And even then, she still puts forth the better performance.

I would have to agree, although I wouldn't be as harsh. She does have a talent, but perhaps this role and this song doesn't suit her.

good, but i really wish the people didn't come out, it kind of ruins it for me, this song is purely mother
scott423 4 years ago
That was why we cut out the ahhhs - too hard to do it with everyone backstage. You're right, this is Mother's song!

On a production I lit this year we had 2 choirs and an orchestra onstage.
We dimmed the choirs and forestage and just had the orchestra lit and mother in a single strong follow spot.
I had goosebumps every night.

This woman is amazing...i've never heard anyone other than Marin Mazzie sing this song well. But this woman was AWESOME!!
