City Limits sounded the best for what you were playing. Very nice clean. Crystal clear. You played it very well too. So far I have not seen an ugly piece of wood in your hands yet.
For this song and this style, the Jazz is my favorite. Is seems to balance the highs and lows the best. The challenge is they all sound so sweet. I think the "best" one would just be the one that clicked for the listener.
Dale, thank you so much for this video. I've been wanting to hear a comparison of your various Collings guitars in a format like this. I find the CLJ to be very sonically interesting, much like Dante mentioned. It's very woody and acoustic like-- very organic.
But it's hard for me to overcome my own personal bias in favor of the more "electric" tones.
Thanks so much for posting this Dale-- best of the season to you and yours.-- Justin
Dale, I always enjoy your posts and thank you for this one. All three guitars sound great but to me the CL Jazz is the most sonically interesting with its acoustic overtones. Is there a neck profile difference between the CLJ and the Soco/I-35? To be honest I would be happy to own any of them!
sure appreicate you taking time to watch and share your feedback! I asked Collings to build the I35 with a bit lower profile so it is the slighest bit smaller than normal, the CLJ neck is SUPER comfortable, lower profile than i would have expected, love it! The Soco neck is very Gibson like without being to bulky - i like them all even with the subtle differences. When i am playing any of them i never ever thing about the neck they are so great!
1. City Limits Jazz - beautiful tone & very balanced, although very bright on the upper register.
2. Soco - much mellower, highs still come through but sound much more rounded, not as bright, but has a sweet tone.
3. I-33 - totally different sound; the tone is amost like a cross between the first two.
All three sound good! It would be hard to pick just one of these as a fav. Must make your life very tough Dale! :-) Thanks for the video comparison! Do you own stock in Collings?? ;-P -Derek
Dale I have been a fan of Collings & PRS for a while now. Great video but I'm sure you know that the pickups in the I-35 as well as the SoCo are the same so electronically you have redundancy. I'm glad your doing this test though as I will be receiving a CL deluxe & I-35 deluxe in the near future. I would like to discuss a little more about the SoCo with you when you have the time. Thank you again for the great videos. Wishing you and your family a great holiday season!
great to hear from you! Great to hear you have a couple of Collings on the way. I've owned many PRS guitars, in all respect i don't miss them - the Collings are just a new standard. I'll be glad to talk 'Soco' any time my friend. Hope you and your have a great holiday as well and a blessed 09!
hi dale, all three guitars have their own unique "voice"......all are nice but i'm partial to the city limits for all-around warmth, tone, & prescence....another great performance
Hi Dale......I am partial to the I-33....beautiful tone on all 3 but the I-33 has that mellow tone I favor. Great picking also......Man you musta robbed a bank to afford all those nice axes.....Merry Christmas.....Roger
Hello Martin! Hope things are good for you these days....thanks for lending your ears!! Hope you have great holidays......with some playing time as well, your friend,
I would be extremely happy with any of the three guitars. The City limits stands out slightly among the others. with the others tied for second. Collings puts out great instruments.
As always, your playing is superb! I think my order of preference from the 3 guitars is 1:City Limits Jazz, 2:I-33, 3:Soco. I guess I prefer the brighter sound of the Jazz. All three are very nice, though. Thanks for posting!
beautiful tone! And great playing! I want my hollow body back now..

It's really hard to decide between the Soco and the I-35. I do like those two better than the JCL, though, for the more mellow tone.

City limits for this video...
I think the I35 would be my pic if you didn't have the tone so rolled off.
All are beautiful guitars. I wish I could be so fortunate as to own all of those! Or just any one!
Fantastic playing as always.
Happy holidays!
