If you watch Derek Forbes playing it live (like on Rockpalast in 84), he plays it with a pick and he alternates pick / slap, have you tried it this way ?

Not bad mate, but the quick riff in the chorus i think sounds more like the original if you play a run of 6-7-9 on the A-string once first time round then 3 times second time around. i maybe wrong... i may not... try it and see what you think.
