@celloguy : actually, in the prelude of the 1st Act it's the very first entrance of the 'fate'-theme by the timpani, right after the first few bows of the strings. I've placed this 'quote' at the beginning of my clip for obvious reasons.
This video is amazing! Janancek has recently become my favourite opera composer, and has taekn over from the usual front-runners. I adore Katya, Jenufa, and the Vixen...also Makropoulos...all have great melodies. Looking forward very much to the ENO's new Katya with Patricia Racette very soon.
Thanks for the beauty of music as well de video images and the fantastic explanation about love story between Leos and Kamilla and, finally, the plot of Katia Kabanova so romantic and tragic.
La direccion de Sir Charles Mackerras, la presencia de la extraordinaria soprano Elisabeth Söderström como Katia y del tenor Peter Dvorsky como Boris hacen de esta grabacion una verdadera joya musical.
Brilliant recording indeed. Soprano E. Söderström has a beatiful voice and performance. She manages to get into the character masterfully. A sense of genuineness seems embbeded in her endeavour. Thanks for your detailed posting.
Also which recording is this?

Arg! The first few seconds of this video - where are these in the score again! So annoyed that I can't remember.
