So sorry to hear that Hubert Sumlin has passed away. He was one of the best. Just listen to his solo on Wolf's 300 Pounds or his playing on Down in The Bottom - just brilliant!
I met him at a concert in London a few years ago and he gave me his plectrum (not that he used one). On the back it says: I ain't done yet!
First heard Hubert Sumlin many years ago. The lines he was playing were so frenetic, heavy, and out there that it made the Sun Ra stuff sound like common time pedestrian sunshine. It was one of those moments where you're thinking if this DJ doesn't say who this is... Well God smiled on my ears because the man finally said "that was the great Hubert Sumlin folks" thus my introduction to a lifetime of extraordinary guitar. RIP Mr. Sumlin. My ears (and fingers) thank you for a life well lived.
yeah, Heaven done called another Blues Stringer back Home. I'm sure there are many angels once more holding out their hand saying we've been waitin on you brother, welcome to the band.
Thanks for picking that up mate. Edited. Checked out your channel also & you have some awesome clips on there. You deserve more subs. Look forward to your next upload ;-)
@assassin0402 Then we would not legends that become mythical figures for our kids to look up to. And Stevie Ray Vaugh wouldn't get new band mates to play with!
The shirt he's wearing in this vid is from Memphis' Peabody hotel's boutiques. I know, I shopped for them but my BF would not have appreciated it so I just got him a regular T-shirt but when I pointed it out to Mr. Sumlin while he was at Tremblant's International Blues Festival in Quebec; his expression was one of amazement. How did I know where he got his shirt! He was one of the most adorable artists to grace any stage at this event. I will never forget him.
I am fortunate I had the chance to see him with his friend Buddy Guy at the Experience Hendrix Tour at the DAR Constitution Hall a few years ago, man to play like he did at his age... You know it had to be something to see him in his prime. Rest In Peace to a gentle Blues Legend... God Bless You!
I still have the birthday present I bought for Hubert for what was to be his birthday bash at Mexicali Live on November 16th. Showed up at the club early and it was pitch black and locked... Not one sign mentioning that there was to have been a show. About six of us stood out in the rain for a bit, tried calling the box office to no avail, and finally split. Its an Italian purple silk tie, and a card in the shape of a Gibson electric. I'll get it to you one day! Hubert, Its been a pleasure!
The greatest Bluesman I ever knew. Got to play Bass for him 4 times and it was the best time I ever had on a stage. Much love to Hubert and his family.,,,,, especially Toni Ann.
Rest Mr. Sumlin....you will be missed

The smile on Robert Cray's face at 00:24 just says it all about Hubert Sumlin & what a privilege it must have been to have played with him.
I'm picturing him jammin' with Wolf, Muddy, Albert King, Robert Johnson & Stevie right now.
Christmas has come early for the Lord.
