Does anyone know what is the latest with Shamu? This is utterly ridiculous. We don't own Earth and all of it's species. This whale should be released back to where it is meant to be and not cooped up in a paddling pool.

We have no right whatsoever to capture animals just for our entertainment. They are wild animals and are a dangerous, therefore should be treated with respect! I really hope they haven't put this whale down, like they did with Abu the tiger. They're not domestic animals.

It is incredibly sad that this freak accident has occured however Tilikum is a wild animal. It has been in captivity for 20 years. The trainers and vet knew what this animal was capable of. Tilikum should not have to lose his life because he probably did not intend to kill Dawn Brancheau. My thoughts are with the family. Now it is a bit too late to release this orca because the real Shamu died a few years later when they actually released him due to shock of the cold water and more space.

umm, actually Tilikum is Shamu... yes, there is officially only one "Shamu." But, Sea World considers all of their dolphins to be Shamu, kind of a stage name I guess. Plus, they aren't killing Tilikum..

Shamu is a wild animal, a killer whale. An animal who has been stuck in the same cage since 1992. People say they hate being stuck in the house, imagine being stuck in your small house being asked to perform for an audience every 2-3 hours. You would be frustrated, you would want to lash out. Put yourself in the position of a killer whale, was he really in the wrong for what he done? An animal does not know right from wrong. This animal should not be killed it should be set free to the ocean.

The people who work with these animals love them very much. It's not a slaughter house. It's inhumane to let an animal murder people and then set it free. That's injustice!

The owner should be the one going to jail and the animal put down, not set free. It can die in the wild by some other whale or it can die in a humane fashion in an aquarium by people who care.

You should already know that killer whales and other animal species kill others as food. It is nature! i think it's possibly barbaric that people are thinking this way. I'm agreeing with you on a point here, you just don't see it. I mean, this happens a lot and it so is that this whale is aggressive. It's the owners responsibility with any animal it owns. The owner should go to jail or be fined, it's their fault, not the animal. So if we set it free, with that line of thinking should we then set murderers free? No!

And to your facts of Three people dying it was one trainer. One injured a while ago and one which can not be proven that the whale killed the man who got into the tank. That's what I said. It's the owner's fault. He took a wild whale into captivity and it's his responsibility. It's fair that if his whale harms someone he should pay for it. It was a risk to take the wild whale out of the ocean in the first place.

That's exactly my point! She knowingly took a dangerous animal into captivity. That's the ridiculous thing about this whole incident. Hence the name, Killer Whale. The problem is that they keep these animals knowingly that they have harmed people before. I feel terrible that she died. Don't get me wrong. I have all sympathy for the people, but not the animal. And I'm agreeing with you, we shouldn't be playing around with these animals. Just get rid of the whale so it doesn't hurt anyone else.

When you say get rid of it! Did you mean put it back in the sea, or put it out? I don't think killing Shamu will resolve anything! It's not like this is a loose dog attack. These trainer's knew exactly what these marine mammals were capable of, they knew the risk, and they knew about Shamu's past. Orca' have a short span of temper control, so when they get mad, then it gets deadly. Dawn's death was a tragedy and could of been prevented, but that doesn't mean Shamu has to die.

we all should respect wild animals, no matter if they seem friendly, and no matter how "well trained" they seem to be. I feel very bad for the trainer loosing her life, but in no way should the blame be put on the orcha. A large animal like that should not be kept in a damn tank when he should have miles and miles of ocean water to swim in. Sea World exploits them as well Zoos caging wild animals as well.

I agree Dawn would not have wanted the whale killed had she survived the attack. she positively shared the same compassion for all animals as Steve Irwin did. if these whales cannot be set free after prolonged captivity i just wish someone would find a safe humane way to rescue a trainer in distress during an attack like this. it makes me so sad to see a human struggling for its life in the jaws of an animal it loves. may you find Eternal Love and Peace in spirit Dawn...you will be missed.....

I'm all for any program that saves animals and does rescue/rehabilitation work with said animals, however there is a line between the right thing and exploitation. I understand that funding has to come from somewhere, but at the same time putting an animal that big in a tank that size and commanding it to do tricks for public enjoyment for the rest of it's life has to be miserable for the animal. These are WILD animals, not puppies putting on a show.

Yes he would die if released, but that's only because of how long he's been in captivity. That's not his fault though. Yes Sea world does awesome rescue, rehab, and release programs, but Tilly wasn't one of them.

to Flav1804 The reason in won't survive in open ocean is it was never taught the hunting skills to catch fish or seals ect and would starve to death in short time. In capytivity it was hand feed fish so doesn't know how to survive at sea now.
