@rodeye2 Its all fake, even if Fred is a rat - up until a week ago the Hoffmans were all set for mining the Klondike, when the water permit failed they returned to Porcupine Creek. If all had gone to plan, the Hoffmans would have started in Canada and left Earl hanging (they would not have paid the lease for a mine they did not use).
To back up the fake part, Jack drove the 400 over the river, this is illegal without a permit - off course he has a permit because the whole tantrum was planned...
