Coaches put tapes in of Rice and said this is how you play the position. Still to this day he is a model for all w/r to follow, because he was great in every facet of the game.

Jerry Rice had it all!! He had an excellent work ethic, never quit on his team, he went over the middle for the ball ( remember all those slant pattern's in San FRAN, turned into long T.D.'s!? ). He was the best route runner and he had the best hands ( you hardly ever saw him drop a pass! ). Not to mention the numbers!!..better than any W.R. in the history of the NFL. He caught 11 passes for a S.B. record 215 yards and 1 T.D.!!! He was name MVP of that game over Montana!! That final drive everything went to Rice, he was double teamed on that last T.D., that's why John Taylor was open, now that's a ratio! Rice showed up BIG in big games, a lot of Moss performances are not acceptable for a guy with his talent! System or no system, to many times his attitude is self defeating. Moss was the most talented WR. i've ever seen, however he wasn't the best! I'm not hating on yo boy he's a beast. But there's a few reasons why he isn't #1. Too many times he quit on his team, when he wasn't getting the ball. You Moss lovers who watched his career have to admit that. Second, he hardly ever went over the middle. Granted he is like a race horse, but to many times i've seen him short arm balls over the middle. That being said, I would have to put him #2 behind Jerry Rice.

they had totally different styles.... moss is better then rice at jumping over defenders while in triple coverage and bringing down the ball.... rice could do it all... but what rice had that randy dont... is a stockier body which makes it easier for him to catch a slant and not get absolutely destroyed running over the middle.... randy tooo lanky but noone catches the deep ball like randy.

That doesn't make any sense! What about Heinz Ward, Wes Welker, or any other small slot receiver. They are small, but have big hearts! I don't make any excuses for a guy whose 6'4", who short arm balls over the middle. Chris Carter, Tim Brown, Andre Reed...ect. These are great wide receivers who went over the middle with height. Don't get me wrong Moss is a beast, but when it comes to the argument of not going over the middle, there's no valid reason. Besides, Rice has the numbers & the rings!!

Your premise appears to be that "going over the middle" is somehow a significant qualifier for the greatness of a wr--a contingency if you will. Your point however, is clearly irrelevant; moss singlehandedly REINVENTED the deep threat. There are a preponderance of "over the middle wrs" (the slants the easiest route to run) but there's only one wr to ever reinvent the deep threat. 3 tds, 3 catches, 169yds: a testament of efficiency...You sound like a hater denying the obvious, moss is the goat.

Granted i'll take Moss over any possession receiver in history, however when you start comparing him to Rice, in my opinion Rice was a more complete receiver, who demonstrated excellence in every facet of the position.... I wont lie however, you do make some good points, more than i can say for 95% of youtube users...I agree with some of what you say, and if i had the time or patience perhaps i would construct a more unassailable argument, but ill leave you with this: when u watch randy moss (at his best) play and you watch jerry rice (at his best) play, who--within reasonable aesthetic margins--stands out more to you?...at the end of the day stats cant replace the "eye" test, its the same reason u WATCH the game

Thanks for not calling me names...LOL!! I'm not hating on Moss, he's a monster, he's one of my favorite W/R's. In my opinion the most talented one of them all. Moss definitely caught your eye in the field. However, i think your over looking the fact the Rice reinvented the position in the 80's. Coaches put tapes in of Rice and said this is how you play the position. Still to this day he is a model for all w/r to follow, because he was great in every facet of the game.

Put a tape in of Moss and your in complete awe. However, on that same tape you may find him giving up on his routes, you may find him running lazy routes when he knows he's not getting the ball, you may find him giving up on his team if he's upset or not getting enough pass thrown his way. That's all i'm saying and if your honest, you know it's true. Just my opinion; you can't be the greatest if you don't exhibit greatness in every facet of the sport...i.e...Jordan, Ali, Sanders, Rice.

Randy Moss broke records with a hall of fame QB, and he will break even more with years to come. Jerry Rice had a great QBs with the 49ers and look what he did, now randy moss does and look and what he can do. I'd take Randy over Rice, but i'd say they are both close to the same. Randy moss is more of a deep threat and Rice is more of a possesion threat.

Sorry but Rice set that touchdown record in only 12 games. Moss only broke it by 1 TD. As for him breaking more records, I don't think he'll break any of Rice's all time records, but the only one I see him coming close to is the TD record. He probably would've had it by now if it hadn't been for that one injury riddled season and those two years he wasted in Oakland.
