I attended lollapalooza 93 in Phx, AZ. They were the closing band of the show. Primus was right before with Rage Against The Machine opening the main stage. Tool was couple of hrs later. I still remember the show vividly despite smoking joints and slamming a couple of beers. It was HOT...like arond 115 degrees. Security at the front of stage were using water hoses throughout the day to cool people down. LOL
@tswantek The only time AIC has played at Target Center was in 2006 with Velvet Revolver. The Lollapalooza tour in 93 was at Harriet Island in St Paul. Just sayin....
was there in jersey also. i remember staley saying "welcome to the jersey dustbowl of '93". great show, passed out in the heat during fishbone i think, but came right back after another beer and a hose in the face.
That was one amazing day!! I will never ever forget that day for as long as i live!! All the bands that were (and still are in my opinion) the shit played that day!! Tool, Rage, Primus,AIC....Lollapalooza 1 and 2 could never ever ever be topped!!!! Ever!
I pushed and then you stumbled...I hit you in the leg...youuuuu stared at me so hollowwww....GOOOOT TO KEEP THIS KILLINNNN PAAAAACCCCEEE!!!!! OOOHHH YOUUU COUULDNTT DAMMM THAT RIVVAAAA!!!! and maaaby i dont give a damn anywayyyyyyyaaaa
@tool4janes I was at that show too, I had no idea who AIC was but became a religious follower after, quite possibly the best live show I've ever seen!! If I could do one concert over it would be this one!!
I was at the Pittsburgh show in ‘93 - I remember people throwing sod at the stage and people flying out of blankets into the night sky.... don’t seem to remember much more - wait Primus Kicked ASS. Anyone else at that show, I think we tore up ever last piece of sod in the amphitheater.
I was at the Michigan Milan Speedway show (sure looks like it). Before them, Dinosaur Jr. gets cut short because of a storm that blew in (oh damn...). Afterwards, the sun is setting behind the stage, the clouds are blowing in different directions-multi-colored sky...Alice in Chains comes on and TEARS IT UP! Junkhead was the BEST with that backdrop.......
Seeing this makes me realise how average rock bands are today when compared to what they were 18 years ago. Alice In Chains just owned this stage. Layne is just singing to perfecting, no cheap stage antics and the band as tight as they come. What an awesome bill in 1993: Fishbone, Tool, Primus, Alice In Chains, Rage Against The Machine and Dinosaur Jr. Where's the farkin' time machine!!!!!
I went to Lollapalooza 93 Portland Oregon it was AIC, Primus Rage against the machine and on a little stage in the back the was an unknown band that I sat and watched they were awesome! It was ToolI sat and had a beer with Timothy Leary
I was at this show in Houston. I was a senior in High School, and a HUGE Primus fan. I was SO High, while holding my girlfriend's titties from behind. Half naked people everywhere and mud. When I saw the curtain drop, I was a changed man, They played Rooster for the encore! I've been a huge AIC fan ever since...
@coopersgrl I agree with you. I went to sooo many concerts wasted that I don't even remember them..to me the party started hours before the concert did so by the time I got there I was usually in a blackout..and didn't remember a thing..that sucks to say that after all these yrs!!
I saw AIC in 93 during Lollapalooza. They were dressed up in black suits like they were going to a wedding. That's what I remember more than anything. Great band. Another band destroyed by substance abuse. Very sad. At least we still have their great music from these years.
I hated AIC until I saw this show in the Bay Area in '93- 3rd row. I've been a fan ever since. Primus headlined, I think. But Dinosaur Jr. and Arrested Development were also on mainstage and Tool was on the small stage!
I remember Layne wearing a suit and tie though. I thought it was already getting dark, but I could be mistaken about that. Primus were the last ones out. Fishbone was amazing at that show. Tool was not. They were just as boring then as they are now.
@engelsstaub1 By far the BEST Lollapalooza ever!!! I was at the on in Rhode Island, Rage opened up. I can still remember moshing the hardest when AIC came on, second to last, before Primus. The good ole days!!!!!!!!!!!
@jacbullets Angelo Moore from Fishbone had this unholy blonde mohawk and was crowd surfing. He was just kicking the crap out of ppl with his yellow combat boots! You're right, it was a pretty amazing time. There were hot girls everywhere. Man I wish I was young again :( AIC was AWESOME. I miss Layne. He was a very distinctive and unique vocalist that is always copied but never equaled.
in 1993, I got to see that curtain drop and it was the coolest thing I had ever seen. The crowd went not only nuts but bananas! A moment I will never forget
If this was the show in southern cal I was there, and I heard after on the news that there was like 2 million in landscape damage to the park, with the size of the pit and the fact that the staff was spraying fire hoses into the croud because of the heat, I believe it, that place was nice green grass when the first band played, and a mud pit at the end of the night
Reflecting back on AIC, watching this video, Layne was never rockstar minded about any of it, he just had a beautiful voice, and was a partyer...........and he was never business about it to begin with......
wow,the memories...saw them here in utah when the tour came. instead of "dam that river", they opened with "would". 3 minutes later, people in back could not see the stage from all the dust the mosh pit kicked up. i will never forget that bass intro vibrating my clothes and mind. to bad about what Starr has become, hope he gets healthy again with Dr Drews help.
Nice crowd!!! That's what supposed to happen at badass concerts. Only If I lived to see them life, Id cut off both my nuts and feed them to my dog if Layne could come back and join us.
I saw AIC on a different stop of the Lollapalooza tour, in Barrie, Ontario. They opened their set the same way, with "Iron Gland" and the sheet and net in front of the stage, but the opening song was "Sickman" instead. It was an intense moment for the young dork that I was.
Lollapalooza is the truth. I don't think they should call the band AIC w/out Layne because it is NOT the same band without him. The new guy is definitely talented but they are not the same entity and therefore neither is the band which is a sum of it's parts.

I can't fucking believe out of all the concerts I've been to I have never and now will never see AIC with LAYNE because you know it aint really alice in chains without him he freaking started the bad it was his idea. They have some nerve I bet he is rolling over in his grave...I KNOW I WOULD BE IF I KNEW WILLIAM DEVALL or whatever took my place... he can try all day he will never sound like Layne. Nobody will.. I can't believe they just replaced him like he didn't matter. Fuct up shit. fuck that
i agree to some degree... william duvall is about a quarter as good as layne, and i personally don't think they should of replaced him... but it has been almost 8 years since layne died... and i'm sure the rest of the band just wants to get back together and play some aic stuff. i personally think they should of gone with a name change but oh well.
i agree with you but if they would have changed their name, only the die hard aic fans would know about them. otherwise they would just be four old guys playing new wave metal.
i bet any alice in chains fan would know them, and if they liked the music.... it wouldn't matter. look at audioslave, no kid knew who soundgarden or rage against the machine were, but everyone knows "doesn't remind me"
Well that was an exageration by my part saying that only die hard fans would recognize it, but anybody who isn't an aic fan or doesn't listen to that music or whatever reason there is would probably make the generalization I stated earlier. I wanted them to change their name also but with out Alice in Chains they really are just four old guys playing metal.
I'm anxious to get my greasy paws on the new album next Tuesday.
okay, well only alice in chains fans would listen to alice in chains anyway, lol, so your pilosophy doesn't really make sense... if it's a good song, it's a good song and people will like it regardless of who the band member (or band name) are.
i flew to the orlando show from montana to attend with my brother awesome, saw them also right before dirt was released at the fairgrounds in Bozeman mt. tiny venue to a show like this.
I saw this tour in Nashville without a net. We were on the 10th row, center ( free ticket!) and it was one of the best shows I've ever seen. The fires in the gen. admission area set the mood later that night. Intense!!!
I just bought the BEHIND THE PLAYER with INEZ hes an amazing teacher. It was cool also hearing him talk about how he got started playing and what gear he usesIf you havent picked it up yet, I definitely recommend it.
I was there for that! waterloo village! The first couple years of Lollapalooza were the shit, some of the best bands, I was so stoked to see these guys and tool and primus.
0:48 - I keep watching this bit over and over again - he picks his shoe and then its starts with a 'huh!' and that ace riff kicks in - pure rock. I love you AIC & you especially Layne, ya legend.
1st time I have ever seen a net barrier like this at any put up chciken wire ala Blues Brothers/Good Ole'Boys. I asked them why after the show and they said to avoid any problems as it was hard enough to get gigs as it was due to thier rep.LOL You'd have to be plenty stupid to throw something at them esp in a small club like it was.
@mylesmedlin55 yeah? well id rather have them play with someone than no one. no ones gonna sound like layne. you wont be happy until hes back. william rocked when i went and i was damn impressed. your more of a layne fan than an alice fan.
Ha, I was there too, I was 16. Down from MA because Lollapalooza was banned in MA after they tore down the fences and built bonfires at Great Woods the year earlier.
Heh, i was there myself, saw it at Milan dragway MI....was about 14-15 at the time. Crazy concert, a huge storm ripped through and blew a bunch of stuff off the stage, they had to stop the concert for an hour or so to get things set back up.
I was at a Maryland stop on that tour. It was hot as hell. Jerry Cantrell was talking shit about Winger, Warrant and shit cause everyone was chanting for water. Then they turned the hoses on us. Great show. Great Pit.
yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh,huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuup, alice in chainssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss......jijijjijij
That net was in LA too bro. I remember that show, with Rage kicking the day off...craziness! Layne was on a cruch that day from who knows what, but he did rock the suit!
It was so fucking real back then. The energy. I saw Lollapalooza in '93 in New Jersey. You could feel something was happening as you walked through the crowd. I saw Radiohead this past Saturday. Unfortunately, the feeling is gone.
which show were you at.. I was at the stop in West Virginia (about an hour & a half west of D.C.) and we had the same sh*t, the water bottles flying.. our show was mid-July I think, so everyone had a bottled water with them.. I actually think this video was from the WVA. show, because if you look at the left backdrop of the screen (at times), you can see the old abandoned horse-race track that was there ? good times.
Someone needs to upload the entire show. Goddamn.

i agree with you but if they would have changed their name, only the die hard aic fans would know about them. otherwise they would just be four old guys playing new wave metal.
562aleks 2 years ago
i bet any alice in chains fan would know them, and if they liked the music.... it wouldn't matter. look at audioslave, no kid knew who soundgarden or rage against the machine were, but everyone knows "doesn't remind me"
safetosaydontquoteme 2 years ago
Well that was an exageration by my part saying that only die hard fans would recognize it, but anybody who isn't an aic fan or doesn't listen to that music or whatever reason there is would probably make the generalization I stated earlier. I wanted them to change their name also but with out Alice in Chains they really are just four old guys playing metal.
I'm anxious to get my greasy paws on the new album next Tuesday.
562aleks 2 years ago
okay, well only alice in chains fans would listen to alice in chains anyway, lol, so your pilosophy doesn't really make sense... if it's a good song, it's a good song and people will like it regardless of who the band member (or band name) are.
safetosaydontquoteme 2 years ago
It's not a philosophy. Philosophy is the study of existance, reason, or value, go read a book. I was simply entitling my opinion on your opinion.
562aleks 2 years ago
oh well, i still think you're wrong...

I saw this tour in Nashville without a net. We were on the 10th row, center ( free ticket!) and it was one of the best shows I've ever seen. The fires in the gen. admission area set the mood later that night. Intense!!!

I asked them why after the show and they said to avoid any problems as it was hard enough to get gigs as it was due to thier rep.LOL You'd have to be plenty stupid to throw something at them esp in a small club like it was.

william duvall sucks ass layne forever!!!!
mylesmedlin55 3 years ago 14
@mylesmedlin55 Why don't you go up there and take Layne's place???
sjk72 1 year ago
@mylesmedlin55 yeah? well id rather have them play with someone than no one. no ones gonna sound like layne. you wont be happy until hes back. william rocked when i went and i was damn impressed. your more of a layne fan than an alice fan.

Ha, I was there too, I was 16. Down from MA because Lollapalooza was banned in MA after they tore down the fences and built bonfires at Great Woods the year earlier.

Heh, i was there myself, saw it at Milan dragway MI....was about 14-15 at the time. Crazy concert, a huge storm ripped through and blew a bunch of stuff off the stage, they had to stop the concert for an hour or so to get things set back up.
jaded78 2 years ago
I saw them in New Orleans... I was 15.
Best concert/music festival of my life hands down.

It was so fucking real back then. The energy. I saw Lollapalooza in '93 in New Jersey. You could feel something was happening as you walked through the crowd. I saw Radiohead this past Saturday. Unfortunately, the feeling is gone.
sjk72 3 years ago 4
Do you remember the hovering swarm or plastic water bottles that did'nt stop until Alice was done? That was a great day!
furies69 3 years ago
Furies,
which show were you at.. I was at the stop in West Virginia (about an hour & a half west of D.C.) and we had the same sh*t, the water bottles flying.. our show was mid-July I think, so everyone had a bottled water with them.. I actually think this video was from the WVA. show, because if you look at the left backdrop of the screen (at times), you can see the old abandoned horse-race track that was there ? good times.

I remember palooza 93 ... awesome stuff. Saw them in OH. Layne was wearing his suit and tie. :D
