I got love for this number. Why do people always dub Thin Lizzy "angry" or other negative things. Addiction is a horrible thing but it doesn't make someone an evil person. That's a shame but on the other hand, I'd like this video 100x over if I could.
One of the greatest rock n' roll prayers ever. One of the truths that has given me the most comfort in my sickness is the fact that God thinks about us. "But I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinks upon me. You are my help and my deliverer; do not delay, O my God." -Psalm 40:17
@JobberBud Wow! Thanks mate! I'm going through some shit myself right now. It's not a health thing, but still. Thanks for the Words and verse. I'll look it up! Cheers!
Dear lord, take the time, I believed your story now You believe mine!- Phil Lynott
I wish Phil Lynott could have understood how much us irish people and the rest of the world loved him so he could have put down that heroin, and still be with us today. And if You do heroin like he did, I hope you realize that you mean something to God and your family and you get off that shit, because life is for living.
Thin Lizzy fans; I've been listening to jazz mostly for the last 20 years (check out Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock) but have recently become reacquainted with the boys. I saw Lizzy 5 times between '81 & '83, including their their last gig at Reading, ("Turn the lights up Charlie, I can't see in the dark"). What strikes me now is that I never quite appreciated Lynott's spirituality, if not his complexity as a man, at the time. Peace be upon the man.
What an prodigious vocal performance. You feel the gut wrenching emotion and pain Phil puts into this song. So raw, open and painful, yet awe inspiring at the same time. Sheer brilliance. Phil, I am 48 years old and your music has been a part of my life for about 35 years now. Got me through some real tough times. Sure do miss you, brother.
I don't understand why he says "If you give your soul to heaven, you won't get it back". It kind of seems the opposite to the rest of the songs message.
beutiful song this I think ever wrote by Philip Lynott really do like this one everytime I here it Thin Lizzy will remian legends forever and will neaver ever be forgten they'll be rememberd for decades and decades to come Philip Lynotts music and Thin Lizzy are the bigest rock gods of all time R.I.P Phiilp Lynott and also Gary Moore R.I.P you both did well and you will neaver be forgten.
Only Bradley Nowell from Sublime could delve as deep into his own personal torment as Phil did, and R.I.P. to both of them. If it wasn't for their music, I'd be dead myself
For as long as good music is produced out of human turmoil - the product of human weakness, people will still fool themselves that taking drugs is a good idea. But idolising them has consequences. They lack the self control to stop - even when they know the damage they're causing to themselves and those around them. No, the answer isn't to look to mythical beings such as "god' but to look inside, make use of the selfish gene, learn self control and be better - for yourself.
if any song was a cry for help.this is it ,plill knew he had a serious addition and the only way he could cry for help was through his music ,the whole album was a cry for help from opium trail to southbound to soldier of fortune to dear lord, what a lyiricest and musician ,only the best die young
...one of the most underated songs from Phil&C...angelic voice in the intro & outro, great melody, full of passion & pathos...unforgettable Phil lives forever in t hard rock book of Legends!!!!!!!!!!
One of Lizzy´s most underrated songs and by far the best song on this album, which was pretty much the beginning of the end for the band. The next album Black Rose was awful. Thanks for posting this gem.
@Air420 This is just a guess here but the number 7 in the bible is a reference to completeness or perfection. I think maybe Phil is saying if you give your soul to heaven don't think that all of a sudden things will get all better and there won't be anymore problems. I could see Phil ,being the poet he was, using that number in that way for that reason. Just my 2 cents.
i happened upon this great music of phil and thin lizzy right when ya need it in life...his music is the only thing getting me through the days anymore, such great musicianship!! thank you!! he lives on!
I've had this song along time now. I cry everytime I hear it. R.I.P. PHIL!
P.S...As a black kid in Cleveland, Ohio in the late 70's early 80's It meant the world to me that Thin Lizzy was around. It let me know Hendrix wasn't thew only black man in Rock and it was cool for me to be a rocker.
@ThinLizzyChannel I am from OHIO dayton area It is a sad song ! I absolutely love everything about this song words, guitar, drums and especially his voice never got to see them I was born the wrong era. 1971 i was born!!
@ThinLizzyChannel Right on, if only the black community followed in his footsteps and not this thuggery we see today. RIP Phil, you were a great man and you left a mark on my soul with your beautiful music!
@markanthony11What you posted was really cool ! Over 50 years after Chuck Berry, and plenty have tried , but nobody comes close to all the cool moves that Chuck had. He was the true pioneer of ROCK & ROLL. But I'll always feel like Jimi and Phil were the ultimate ROCKSTARS.
@markanthony11 mark , i feel the same when i hear Dear Lord. I'm a huge Lizzy fan and was lucky enough to see them live 3 times at the Apollo in Glasgow which is now no longer there. The day i heard Phil had left us i could'nd believe it ! What a great waste to not only the music world but the world . Keep listening to Lizzy and keep Phils name alive . Cheers
Awesome tune. Definitely one of Lizzy's best. It's one of my favorites. It's a such a shame that Phil died so young. It's another shame that songs like this are not heard across the airwaves.
Stripped of all pride and pretense, the man remained a poet.
I don't know of many rock artists who ever dared to go so deeply into their own personal torments as Phil did on this song and "Opium Trail" (there were some powerful moments in "Downtown Sundown" as well).
The demon of addiction destroyed his body, but the God to whom this prayer was addressed now has his soul.
I'm grateful that we're still blessed by his music, but I miss him every damn day.
@Kirok Beautifully said, my friend. If only Philip the weak human had listened to the powerful poet within perhaps we'd be watching him age gracefully instead of mourning the quarter century of his passing.
@Kirok one of his most powerfull moments refering to his inner demons is i got to give it up!powerfull song and one of the sadest songs i ever heard!R.I.P PHILL!YOU LL LIVE FOREVER!
want this at my funeral! "my vanity is killing me" what a lyric, he didn't even have to try to reach to crux of the matter - has anyone ever said it better?
