I think it's cool. .....From the beginning VH was always about improvisation. It's probably how Ed's technique evolved and certainly contributed to the evolution of the modern rock stage show. If it's your goal to play songs exactly like the recording every time......you haven't gigged much. But I'll sum it up to say,after you've sold your first platinum LP, you can play it however you freakin like,as long as the crowd still roars and the lighters still flicker in the darkness.

I think it's cool. .....From the beginning VH was always about improvisation. It's probably how Ed's technique evolved and certainly contributed to the evolution of the modern rock stage show. If it's your goal to play songs exactly like the recording every time......you haven't gigged much. But I'll sum it up to say,after you've sold your first platinum LP, you can play it however you freakin like,as long as the crowd still roars and the lighters still flicker in the darkness.

I am a Van Halen fan from back in the day. Eddie cant read music and he did say years ago that he forgot how to play his old songs and had to listen to his old albums before going on tour so that he could remember. Remember, he did drink a lot. come on guys.

I attended this party. Ed was to say the least really messed up. As you see in this video he almost fell off the stage at 1:45 mark. He/they played for over an hour, some VH songs & some cover songs. Billy Idol was supposed to sing that night, but flaked out. Yes, the band even played Rebel Yell! It was wild and exciting. It just wasn't the EVH we all grew up with in the late 70's early 80's. Ed did play on his baby grande piano in the family room and THAT was amazing too. Cool house!

@whoscooldaddydre Yeah I was thinking the same thing! It was nice to here a different take on this song, even though he was trying to dial in his sound and get the right tone through his equipment. But it was a party so no biggie. Laid back.
I honestly think these other people think musicians come out with songs perfectly the first time and forever, and that they don't practice, experiment, or anything. They want them to be perfect robots for their enjoyment. Can't have any diversity.

Forgiving this kind of playing and behavior is moronic. It'd be fine if he were sober and not close to death (trust me, there were death polls at the time, he was THAT bad), but that wasn't the case. He was seriously ill at this time and the criticism is warranted.

@pizzacrime And to further my point, the reason some of us are so "high and mighty" and critical is because, yeah, you know what? It is his own house, he can do whatever he wants. But there were a LOT of people who cared about Ed. Fans, former bandmates, Val, Wolfie. And he was alienating EVERYONE in his life for the bottle.
Eddie was once the greatest guitar player on the planet. Some of us just wanted him to be okay and were genuinely worried about him. That's where the disappointment comes.

@ZachenFoot Well that's a given, because he did nothing musically exciting for a while. But if I never heard another peep out of Ed for the rest of his life, it would suit me fine because of the large amount of fantastic music he has out there already for me to listen to.
About his family and THEIR concerns: none of my business. A man will do what he wants to do in life, and I choose not to pass judgement. Everyone has different issues in their own head and they all deal with them differently.
