FUN FACT: At 1:10 play this backwards and a bit slower and you get GRUNGE

@richardg136 A fender strat is very popular, especially among beginners. I almost bought one like that but I went for an epiphone SG, and I don't regret it. :) The guitarist from Jimmy Eat World plays on one like that.

@richardg136 SG's have the same electronics as les pauls, they sound very much alike. A normal telecaster has single coil pickups, and so it's not as "hardcore" as an sg or a les paul if you're looking for that sound.

If you do however like the look of the telecaster and you look for that hardcore sound, look into blacktop telecasters, they have double coil humbuckers. Oh, and a squire isn't a guitar, it's the cheaper brand of fender. You're probably talking about a stratocaster.

When you get good, you can always buy a more expensive/professional guitar.

And downpicking probably is best to start with,

but not all punk bands use downstrokes exclusively.

For example, some of the faster and more technical early 80s punk bands like Suicidal Tendencies, or the Descendents.

I use both. Really depends on how fast it is.
