I reckon knocking someone out in such a fashion that they fall to the ground is good enough. Maybe he'd have recovered by the time Mpumbu started the ground and pound, but it's also quite likely that he wouldn't have, and he'd have taken some serious damage. The ref can't always wait to see if the fighter recovers from getting knocked out.
It's not as if he slipped, he's clearly out when the second one lands.
Early stoppage? he couldnt defend the second punch (uppercut), he's not gonna be able to defend the guy standing over top of him raining punches. good stoppage.
not a good stoppage, but for a split second there it looked like he was done before he turned over. the ref probably realized it as soon as he stopped it.
@imthebigbadwolf, You're out of your mind, you know nothing about fighting or it's history. Boxing is a part of MMA sir and the same injuries in boxing you will see in MMA because of that boxing component. I'm near 50 years old, and I have been watching MMA before it was MMA and have been studying the Martial Arts for the last 18 years. So i have some experience to speak from. MMA is not legal in some states just for that reason, because of the deaths in Boxing.
Perfect call by ref to stop the fight or he would have suffer unecessary damage. He was stun from the right and the uppercut prove he wasn't defending properly. And those who think he was out need to go and do a fight see. I am a boxer and you can tell when his eye was glazed that he was done
This is an early stoppage plain and simple. We can all say what we think would've happened if the fight were to continue, but the bottom line is it was ended early and we'll never find out. Horrible call; Not to say M'Pumbu wouldn't have finished him following the knockdown, but I feel it is Carpenter's right as an opponent to defend himself when he was clearly conscious, and able to defend himself.
a 7-0 record, alot more things could have ruined other than his record, hopefully he doesnt lose confidence, and turn into a wrestler like you know, dont need to say his you can see him when you close your eyes.
I like the light heavyweight tournament, you give a chance to some unrecognized fighter that often times comes out with something highlight reel worthy, they make "chicken salad out of chicken shit" as brock lesnar would say, oh yeah and I think the stoppage was premature, having said that, if mr. M'Pumbu followed Tim's face with another couple punches I think the result would have been similar
If anybody is questioning the stoppage in this fight, they need to have their head examined! Homeslice was hit right on the tip of the chin=KTFO!! Then he took another tip of the chin strike to finish him. If M'Pumbu followed Carpenter up with anymore strikes he could have killed the guy,....com'on people we love to see KO's but not to see someone killed for god's sake!
Hard to say, as a fighter i would have liked to see Tim have the chance to recover and work his guard but i think he was a bit rocked by those 2 shots and likely would have been KO by follow up shots.
This wasn't an early stoppage, he fell to the ground and didn't even cover his head. Christian would've continued to punch his unconscious head until the ref stopped it. And the refs job is to protect the fighters. I'd rather see a stoppage like this than seeing a fighters unconscious head bouncing off the canvas. It would've ended exactly like Cain vs big nog or hardy vs condit.
@mmawilldesha , did you not see Carpenter drop like a pigeon turd?? Don't know what fight you were watchin', but i saw that pretty clearly. Very good stoppage by the ref, MMA can't afford any deaths or critical injuries in the Octagon right now. Hell...MMA Professionally isn't legal in NY State.
@nagone11 I've been watching MMA for like 11 years now not bragging but I'm just saying I've seen fighters bounce back from worst. Now MMA and New York that's another topic for another time and video.
@nagone11 Maybe you're right because I'm trying to see it it just happened so fast and in the slow mo the camera angles weren't so good but I kinda can see where you're coming from because had the ref not stepped in Christian would've pounced on him it took like 30 views but maybe you're right.
@mmawilldesha , the refs gotta' protect the fighters. In the old days of boxing that may have continued, but since boxing has had many deaths, in MMA they are on top of a KO quick!
@MrImpala03 , he would have gotten pounced on and damn near beat to death bro. When a person gets short circuit-ed they have to recover for a few seconds. That is why the ref stopped the fight because he was prone and open to get hit dangerously hard and multiple times. People have died this way MrImpala03!

ref just prevented an ass whooppage. u see m'pumbu celebrate immediately after the uppercut, i doubt he wanted to inflict more damage than necessary. good call, dude went slomo after the first hit.
It's not the worst stoppage I've seen but he really should've given him a chance to recover, considering how much is on the line. When he landed on his ass he pretty much immediately pulled guard.
@Shirebury its bellator since zuffa is now pimping strikeforce, this is how your gonna get noticed now, bellator is like college football then you go play in the NFL.
Sometimes I really question the ref's justification on stopping fights, but this is one of those rare exceptions where it may have seemed bad, but that wasn't the case. His legs gave out, a sign he was obviously hurt badly, so the ref is good on this one.
I think the stoppage is justified. First punch rocked him, second punch got him the knockdown and if the referee had not stepped in, Christian M'Pumbu would have pounced on him with a flurry of punches and elbows. No unnecessary punishment is needed.
@GfpWrestling Just saying "fighter safety" means nothing. you seem to think i was attackting the decision. Im not. I just was stating the fact that, yes indeed it was earlier than most people would call.
@GfpWrestling I strongly agree. Similar to in boxing when they stop a fight when its too one sided, even though technically it could've went till someone got hurt bad.
@GfpWrestling pretty good for a guy that doesnt beleive cutting weight against a guy who looks like a heavy weight with a 7-0 record pretty damn good id say.
@letsgodudes first punch landed and the guy spent about 3 seconds trying not to fall over without guarding at all, 2nd shot dropped him, correct stopage
fair stoppage 2 me
