The Office, like its American remake, Arrested Development, and pretty much every good sitcom of the past decade, works much better when you know the characters. Best thing you can do is watch a couple episodes sequentially and treat it as a long movie. Once the characters grow on you they never let go.

Don't expect to get 100% of the jokes, either. A lot of them are based on obscure British pop culture references the average Yank (myself included) wouldn't get.
