cash for clunkers is not a good idea because it adds another 2 billion dollars of government spending, if they wanted to fund this program they should have used out of a separate program such as from the stimulus package or something else, not more government spending

In the end, it's not clear that Cash for Clunkers will actually help the auto industry that much. We're going to have a couple months of stellar car sales, and then it's going to drop back to normal. The auto makers aren't going to open new factories just to handle a couple months of higher demand.

Campbell is wrong. Cash for Clunkers is hurting the economy.

Cash for Clunkers is like Bastiat's "Broken Window Fallacy". People who think that destroying running cars is a great idea also think that wars and hurricanes have a silver lining because economic activity also increases.

There are many unintended consequences. The $3 billion to fund Cash for Clunkers could have been better spent on other things.
