  • Completely forgot yeah? You are so covering up a more entertaining story.

  • Seems you're finally found your way. This is very encoureaging. We're all supposed to live the life we want and choose.

  • Lipstick problem, hmm.

  • Great job! Loved the video! 5 Stars!

  • Labels are for soup cans :)

  • You are what you are and it doesn't matter which way you swing

  • Haven't you been with a man?

  • I am a man. And heterosexual.

  • But aren't all heterosexuals bi? I mean how would they know they're straight if they've never been with a man?

  • Are you a lesbian? If so, how did you 'discover' it?

  • I didn't 'discover' it. It's second nature. I just always liked girls, I never liked guys so I never thought to be with someone I didn't like.

  • Okay, so you're out. No problem. I didn't mean anything with my previous comments. You should make a video about it.

  • Lawl nah, I'm just having fun, I was asking in earnest whether you've been with a man. If your being sincere in your questions then so am I.

  • @ Raffafan, Grow up you ignorant idiot.

  • Did someone miss the show?

  • No, lesbians are not bi. Bisexual women are bi, lesbians are lesbians. There is a difference. I could ask you the same question... "Aren't all straight men bi?" How do you know that you are straight if you've never been with a man?

Lesbians know they're lesbians in the same way that you know you are straight. It's really that simple.

  • sex is sex dude. its about enjoying yourself without having to say yes or no to stupid questions like the ones you pose.

  • That's what's great about sex. It doesn't require any thinking.

  • haha you were so cute when you were like "what the crap?!"

  • ok i m a straight women but a women a women y do u have to act any different to how we all act

  • what?

  • im trying to say that we are all people and who defines how we act and our gender roles variety is the spice of life act how eva u like and screw the judgemental people

  • Yes.The judgmental people. Screw them.

That is most certainly the answer. Because the tendency to compare is 100% sequestered to only certain people.

Or it's a fact of our nature that we all deal with.

  • I can see the librarian in her. jk, not completely anyway. But really, this is a really interesting vlog.

  • my how you've changed. you look NOTHING like youre little animated cartoon in your intro. haha. great vid, as always.

  • but do you like gladiators movie ?

  • that fun

  • Funny, I must have missed those days in Sunday school when they went over God's list of "normal"...the only stories I can remember have to do with love, compassion, and acceptance

  • There is no god, at least not the christian idea of god.

Normal is just what you are used to.

  • I think she is hella hot dressed like this myself.I love a girl in glasses

  • Well you rigt, girl's wiht glasses look hot.

  • What is normal? It would be an ignorant misconception to say that what is "normal" is not being redefined as time goes on. And I for one am glad more people are realizing we don't have to fit gender roles, and can be ourselves. And the person who made this video has her act together, and her parents raised her to act like a respectful open-minded human being which is far more than I can say about the way you are behaving.

  • OK, I havn't wached in a long time....did your hair get long??? WOW! mine is finaly really short the way I like it, and everyone who dosn't know me thinks I'm a guy...its really anoying!!

  • No, it's just you who's braindead.

  • i think we're always evolving as human beings. it is the very nature of what humans are. all genders and everyone in between.

  • i loved your bleached hair!

  • I totally relate with this beav who posed the question... I don't relate strongly to either gender AND I'm bi, so that makes it a little weirder for me when interacting with guys and girls

  • i've wanted to shave my head for such a long time. just to be able to do the whole young, punky, edgy, typical queer girl thing -- to be able to walk down the street and, for even a little while, have someone look at me and say "she's totally not straight."

i want to have my own experiences just like that. the journey of finding yourself is probably more important than what you do when you actually get there.

  • That is a very inspiring quote.

"The journey of finding yourself is more important that what you do when you actually get there."

Are those your own words? :)

  • yes, they're my own words. stream of conciousness going on there.

  • ahh! the hair :P

--weird that everyone is talking bout thanksgiving.. us canadians had ours weeks ago..

    :l

  • I know eh? lol

  • Whoa! You're looking like Julien Plenti in this vid. (Aka Paul Banks of Interpol).

    Nice.

  • i love him.

  • Cool! .... but now I'm wondering which beaver just wrote that. :P

  • This reminds me of something someone oh-so-wise (and handsome) once wrote...

"The two-gender assumption has consistently proven to be inaccurate and inadequate...It [middle ground of gender] is wide-open and inclusive and until it is acknowledged, gender bending is not some radical expression, but rather a diplomatic proposal to become evolved and complete human beings"

their names escapes me;)...sound familiar anyone?

  • Ditto! Two thumbs up! :)

  • haha thats exactly dress. baggy pants and vans.

  • thanks for answering my question. i am looking forward to the rest of the weeks vlogs

  • this was a great question. a lot of people agreed with you and needed this discussed. thanks for writing in.

    -jess

  • There is also a very interesting book about todays subject called Making Sex (from Greeks to Freud) by Thomas Laquer.

ps : you look very pretty today.

  • Goodie, I like this weeks subject. I haven't ever been so aware of the gender roles that people "should" get and that's why some people started calling me gay and so forth. Now I'm perfectly cool about it and curious to hear what you guys have to say about it

  • Hey, I idenitfy with the beavver who wrote in. I probably would have as well, but I am not sure where I fall exactly. I do call myself genderqueer, but I appretiate the link you added in the sides. You rock, Jess.

    Erin

  • Very well put, as always Jess. I think our society in general is becoming more tolerant and less surprised by those of us who don't follow a typical gender stereotype, which is awesome! I think it says a lot about where we're going and hopefully it will be to a place where we can identify whichever way we want to without the social backlash that comes with it.

  • it's weird that you're talking about this this week. i've recently went through something similar myself. from being the 22 year old with the full on mohawk and lip piercings etc., i took a step back and had a look at myself in the mirror (so to speak) and realised that this isn't really who i want to be anymore. so gone are the piercings and the hair is getting longer. keep up the good work! x

  • the video wasn't late for some people in the world

  • Im currently eighteen and Im still not sure who I am, nor do I know who Im going to be in the next few months. But I honestly believe that because of the beaver bunch Ill grow up to be a more positive and happier me =)

    xoxo

  • Very well put Jess. I am a lesbian Mom in my thirties and find that every year brings new changes, explorations and inspirations. Age has taught me to look forward to my evolution instead of fearing it. I hope everyone can do the same.

  • turkey woohooo

    haha best part

  • Heh. I Wear Airwalks. Basically The Same As Vans Trainers XD

  • if they don't identify themselves as fay or straight, they're either bi or asexual (asexual being u arent attracted to either; its possible)

  • Hey Jess! I tried to upload a video response and link it to this video, but it doesn't seem to to be working. This is my first time uploading a video and I don't completely understand You Tube :P Could you check it out? It shows up on my channel. Please?! I need your help! :)

  • I love gender and am so fascinated by it, which is why I am a Women's and Gender studies major. Sometimes I wish I was more genderqueer, but that's not me so I'll just continue to study it with a passion.

    Check out my favorite quote:

"I want to live in a world where the words male and female are flexible and subjective, even redundant. A world of perpetual transformation, where sexuality and gender become obsolete as people begin to question why they should be the same person, day in, day out.

  • A world where the overriding ethos is to question and explore your sexuality and gender without the restrictions prevalent in 'normal' society. Questioning what is masculine and what is feminine is about redrawing the boundaries (or removing them altogether) surrounding activities that are seen as inherently male or female. I long for a world where the old oppositions of male/female, masculine/feminine, heterosexual/homosexual have dissolved.

  • I want to live in a world where I am free to be whoever I want to be, whenever I want to be, male, female, other or neither."

    -- Underground Magazine

I first heard part of it on QueerFAQtor, so I looked up the rest and fell in love.

    Great video. :)

  • Lol. You look cute with that outfit and hair!

  • There are a few people on Youtube who are genderqueer. It's good to see it acknowledged here this week :)

  • I'm not totally feminine nor am I totally masculine. I love that there is a gender continuum and you can be anywhere on it at any time. I personally am the most attracted to girls who are somewhere in between. Someone who can embrace all sides of gender.

  • The late teens into early twenties is defiantly time when we figure out who we are.

  • lol

  • i love you jess. you look so preppy today. i wish you could post a picture of yourself being extremely femme. cheers love your vidz

  • i'm actually wearing my chunky vans right now...

  • Yes, people still wear Vans. Sure those people are my 50-year-old Dad ... but that counts.

  • does that make wearing Vans cool?

  • for anyone wondering about gender there's this great book called gender trouble by judith butler that can be helpful... and there's another called undoing gender about transitioning... it's really good. a little difficult to read at first if you're young but then it's fine.

  • one thing is wonder is how do we know that we're gay or transgender ?

i pretty much dress up like everyone in this channel.. one day i look like you jess another i look like michelle... and sometimes i even look like kade (i wonder if i'm confused or if it's really me, people never recognize me!)

  • Think about it a bit, but don't stress on it too much. Oh, and the major sign that you're gay is liking the same gender. :P ^^

  • hey rainboyrawer909 thanks for the advice... i get what you say but what if we don't know what's our gender than i guess we can be straight right ? i mean kade is pretty much straight right ?

  • do you have some pictures or something from that time when you wore baggy pants and had a shaved head? :)

  • i usually just aim for androgyny.

  • I was smiling all through this video, because it is exactly where I am at the moment. I'm finally starting to realise that my changes in dress sense etc is all me just figuring myself out. And although I haven't quite worked out everything, I think realising that I'm in the process is an important first step :)

  • ditto

i love the beaver bunch and this topic

  • I'm hurt that you forgot about us =(

  • Right on Jess! You're just such an awesome individual.....love ya!!!: O)

  • wow, when did your hair get so long? :)

  • I was so disapointed yesterdy arvo when no video was posted, guess I forgot bout the whole time difference thingy lol wat a dipstick anyway its now 6:01pm on Tuesday

  • Comment removed

  • Not to worry, Jess. Your video was worth the wait. I'm in my 50's. Mostly femme, but some days more on the butch side. I just let it be.

  • Sometimes people don't identify with either genders, and if that's so, well just act how you'd like to act. There are people who define themselves as "genderqueer" because they don't believe they're either gender, or they believe they're somewhere right in between. And that's fine, everyone is different and that's for sure. Just be yourself, that's good enough. I also suggest watching the documentary called "Straightlaced", it's about gender roles and it provides some insight on this topic. ^^

  • i just watched the trailer.. thanks for the advice. do you know how to find this film outside of the Us ?

  • No problem, I really have no idea how to find the doc. outside of the US, but we managed to get it here (Canada). It was featured at the gay club I go to and the sponsor found it somewhere. My best guess would be your local library (they could probably order it in and put it up for borrowing) oorrr the internet. I know that's probably not that helpful but yea. Sorry, and good luck trying to find it. :3

  • okay thanks... yeah there's pretty much noway i could get it at my local library.. yeah.. but i'll try the internet. maybe someone will upload it sometimes or sell it somewhere.

thanks anyway. have a good one.

  • i'm biologically female. i dont identify with either male or female. i consider and label myself as genderqueer.

    <3
