  • I still can't find a single person who played this better than my high school friend. It was amazing at the time but now it's just sad.

  • This is absolutely amazing! Excellent unison.

  • I agree with everyone else. It should have stayed a solo. Sounds MUCH better with the pitch bending. That's my opinion.

Other than that, this was done well !

  • I don't think there is any reason for this to be played in a five player unison. What were you trying to achieve with this? A solo is meant to be played with personality and style; to make this solo a five player soli takes away from the creative freedom of the soloist. Neither the bending nor vibrato was there and as such it was rather bland and static in comparison to others playing the same part by themselves.

  • AHHHHHHH. I wish the whole piece was on youtube

  • the whole thing is on youtube.

  • @TheBlooIvan the whole thing is on youtube.

  • @hornbeast22

I mean the whole piece played by this very group. Is there a video on you tube where this clip was taken from?

  • i don't really like the unison, I'm practicing to audition for the solo part for when my high school plays this this winter, and I much prefer it as a solo. you can hear it when they play the high F sharp, there is NO WAY to get five clarinets to play high F sharp in tune together, its just not going to happen.

  • I don't dig the unison stuff... I'm sure he wouldn't put this performance nor have 5 clarinets at the same in an actual recording for this piece.

  • wow that's beast matching....with all the pitch bending and all. good ears.

  • Daymn.. that's one pro unison.

Played this earlier this year. Wish we took it at this tempo T_T , well, meh. Ticheli conducted us for the performance. I've probably been an immature player, because the tempo we took was really fast for me

  • amazing clarinet playa!

  • i wanna meet him

  • I've always liked this Blue Shades piece. Just found out Ticheli teaches at USC.

  • haha the lady in the backround looks like she hates her life

  • this makes me proud to be a clarinet player...

  • That is an epic moment. It really shows how fantastic a clarinet can sound.

  • I agree, it was a novel idea but took away from the fact that it is a solo. I played this a few years back and it took a lot of work to get the note bends in place and the altissimo notes in tune.

  • Oh my god! I remember last year when the wind ensemble had to play this for their winter concert. My clarinet section leader had to play that solo and she sounded EXACTY like he was playing it. I had my jaw dropped the whole time! i know she got a scholorship for this music school.

  • SICK!!!!

  • That was amazing. our clarinet SOLOIST can't even play that good in tune.

  • Tell me about it. One clarinet playing a double high G at forte can hurt people's ears, but 5 is something I don't want to talk about!

  • Actually, Ticheli was asked in advance about the unison solo idea, and he really liked it and approved it. He was also at the performance in Chicago, and liked it.

  • While I competely admire how well this is done (This is probably the best unison I've ever heard in such an extreme register) I feel like the section's effect was kind of butchered in a way. It is a solo for a reason....And all of the stylistic jazz bending and vibrato had to be cut out due to the fact that it's five and not one playing. Still...kudos on matching so well. I just personally prefer it as a solo.

  • you sure he wasn't just trying being polite?

  • @ThirdEarth i agreee. it sounded way too politee for a piece. it IS a solo for a reason. it should much rather be played that way. it is jazz. :P

  • @ThirdEarth Real jazz players can do all of that in unison. Doits, falls, rips, the whole nine yards. All the classic big bands, and gordon goodwins, airforce jazz ensemble, they all got it. And the best unison ever is when the water breaks by liquid tension experiment at the end.

  • damn. That's probably the best unison clarinet sound I've ever heard. Bravo to those people.

  • Umm bad bad bad. I agree that it is A SOLO.

It is WAY to difficult to keep FIVE clarinets in tune... Especially playing a solo like THAT.

Oh and my high school played this, and I played the marimba accompaniment, and this chick is playing it in the wrong octave. Lol.

  • @thedashiii Okay. I assume that this is a professional band. And she probably knows its not in the right octave. I mean there's ALWAYS a reason for anything they do. Maybe it sounded better or maybe the marimba didn't go low enough. So stop pretending like you're all that.

  • why would they do this to a great clarinet SOLO? all the effects of the solo are diminished by having more than one person play it.

  • why did they make it a five player unison anyways?

  • to keep them all happy!

  • wow your freakin amazing!!

clarinet solo guy... well guys all sound great

  • simple mistake, bud. Let it go. no one checks grammar when typing crap on youtube. lol

  • your name suits you

  • Duh, why else would I have picked it when signing up for this site? I know you're not stupid enough to actually believe that's an insult.

  • fair enough
