Yup, just a listen tells me that The University Eight are the same as The Varsity Eight, = Wallace Ed Kirkeby = California Ramblers. So this is a pseudonym for Ed Kirkeby who also sings the vocal, that was a giveaway, along w/the Bb Bass Sax
(Adrian Rollini) Tommy & Jimmy Dorsey are probably on this record as well. Problem Solved! Cameos & Lincolns were part of the Plaza Group, Lincolns were the same as Cameos but Lincoln was for the East Coast, Cameos for the West Coast.
Great recording! This was released by the Varsity Eight for Cameo records. Many of the dance band selections released on Cameo were also released on Lincoln with pseudonyms for the band. Therefore, there's a strong possibility that the University Eight was actually the Varsity Eight.
Yes, that 's what I thought too, but I'm not sure. The Varsity Eight was also a pseudonym for the California Ramblers. I found plenty of info. for the Varsity Eight, but really found nothing on University Eight. So did they have a pseudonym for their pseudonym for Lincoln?? ha ha ha Probably... If anyone knows for sure, please let us know.
I checked the recording dates for several Varsity 8 records on Cameo and note that they are the same as the dance band renditions on Lincoln. However, the names of the dance bands on Lincoln are different. For example, "Last Night on the Back Porch" was recorded on 9/6/23 by the Varsity 8 on Cameo; the recording date is the same on Lincoln, but the band is the University 6. You can check this out exhaustively by comparing Cameo & Lincoln listings on the On-Line Discography.
And How Sweet It Is!!! I LOVE THESE Cameo, Lincoln, Etc. I Have This Wonderful Record In My Collection, And Treasure It. I LOVE THE WONDERFUL VIDEO To Go Along With It! Thank You So Much For Making This Day Much Brighter For Me.
Great selection! More, please.
