@TechMaven I actually checked it out just a couple of weeks ago on a 140 mile street ride, and the mileage was right around 45 mpg. I'm happy with that, and I'd guess it's probably about average for the DR650. It would be nice if the stock tank held another gallon or so.
@r1gester Funny you should say that. When I bought the bike it had been sitting idle for years, and I was afraid the carb could be all gunked up. It ran fine, though, as you heard in the vid. The funny part is that as I type this, I have the carb completely disassembled, and soaking in some cleanser. Hopefully the thing will run as well after I put it all back together! :)
@dprider02 If you decide to go for a new seat, check out Seat Concepts. They do a really nice seat for Suzuki DR and DRZ, narrow at the front so you can stand easily but widens under your buns so you get streetbike support when sitting. You can choose a standard height, "tall" or a "short" seat and foam density (soft, standard, firm).
Great videos. Just back to riding after over 16 yrs away. Got a DRZ400 and dual sporting like that is where it's at for me!!
@maplegolfnut I just checked out the Seat Concepts web site, and their product looks to be a possible option. About half the price of a Cobin or Sargent. Thanks for the heads up. I'll be looking around to see if I can find some reviews.
The DRZ400 is a great bike, and I'm sure you're loving it. Lighter and more trail worthy than the 650. I had the 350cc version for a while some years ago, and liked it a lot!
Really enjoyed that vid. What awesome countryside. Do you get trout in those rivers (2:30)? Hope you had a great time at your sister's. Best wishes to you and yours for Christmas and the New Year. Cheers!
@TKTex1 Thanks. I'm not really into it myself, but I understand that that river (south fork of the Shenandoah) is pretty popular amongst the trout fisherman. It is shallow and quite clear ... very pretty.
Hope you and yours enjoy the (warm!) holidays down under! :)
Duffy, looks like fun. I remember doing stuff like that, but good trail riding is hard to come by in my area these days. Be sure to carry a good cell phone or at least drop bread crumbs as you go.
Hope you had a great Thanksgiving and have a wonderful Christmas. Curious, did you do the seat mod yet and if so, how did it turn out?
@Spacecoastz Isn't there still some good sandy trail riding to be had out in central FL? As far as cell phones go, btw, I wouldn't even THINK about heading out into the boonies without one, and I check the reception frequently. A false sense of security perhaps, but a good tool anyway. How did we ever manage without them?!
I strapped on a generic ATV seat pad, and it has improved comfort slightly. The jury's still out until I do some longer rides in the spring.
Is that your visor fogging or the camera lens? However you need some ventilation. I also wish it was a bit higher quality. Nice area and seems like relaxing ride.
@Kmortisk Good question. I have the camera (an old Kodak v570, hence the quality) mounted all the way down inside the chin bar of my helmet. There is a 2" hole bored through the chin bar for the camera to peer out from, with a piece of old visor glued in place to keep out wind and bugs. That's what is fogging up. This setup works pretty well except when it's cold out, which it was!
Looked like a lot of fun DP, makes me miss my old trail riding days. Maybe someday my finances will allow me to get back in it again. Thanks for the vid.
@MAG315 It's certainly been a lot of fun to head off road again, but I'm definitely going about it with more reserve than I did back in the younger days. No more high speed spills for this guy (I've already had a few low speed ones, though!). :)
I have little '09 Honda crf230L dual Sport after about about 4000 miles of experience you'll love off roading. Just stand up alittle while riding over the rough.you rode that Dual sport from Mo. to Jersey? wow

From what I noticed when on the rough trails, you are sitting down. You need to stand up and let the bike do all the work. Been racing motocross for years, and you can't jump 60 feet or go over 2 foot braking bumps wide open sitting down. ;) Cool video man! Maybe one day I'll snag a dual sport.
@Dp908 Good call. I used to be a pretty decent off road rider, but my old carpenter's knees ain't what they used to be. I know what I'm supposed to be doing out there, but sometimes my knees aren't up to all that shock absorber work. I'll still tackle the trails, but at much lower speeds than I used to, with my butt mostly on the saddle. It's still way fun, though! :)
@britex3186 Yeah man, you could use a 3rd bike! Having a dual sport opens up a whole other world of fun riding opportunities. Looks like the Sam Houston National Forest might have some cool forest roads to explore. I'd recommend the DR650! :)

How is the fuel mileage on a DR650 when ridden on pavement?

I've heard a lot of DRZ650's, yours just sounds so clean and healthy for some reason...

I'm really looking forward to my next trip down your way in the spring ... with the DR.
I'm sure that you could plan out a pretty cool loop for a dual sport day on the forest roads.

I liked VA part. The bridge was near Riverton, Va?
Used to vacation at Long Beach Island and saw lots of state forest land around there. All pine and sandy.
KeukaRyder 1 year ago
@KeukaRyder You're pretty good! That bridge spans the south fork of the Shenandoah, not very far south from Riverton. Indian Hollow Rd / SR613.
I grew up in Cherry Hill, btw, and I used to go down to LBI regularly. Also did a fair bit of off roading in those pine forests. Ahh, the memories!
