What month 1970 car did you modify to make this car? There were only abt 10,000 of the original 1970 Zs, and there have to be *maybe* 4,000 of them left today. Which number did you kill to make this car?
And either that is the LAST perfect 1970 dashboard, or a very good dash cap.
@osp80 It would have been a near bolt-in on any other year 240, as well ~ WHY carve up one of the very few 1970 models left on the planet?? They are so few now they need to be preserved, not modified. The Datsun/Nissan Z car is the most-popular sports/GT car in history (based on sales), & this was the year that started that landslide. They made more than 31,000 1971 240Zs, & they were just as lightweight as the '70s. Why not pick on one of those instead of a year that deserves to be restored?
To see the build thread for both the diesel engine and the separate turbo install, do a quick search on this site: nissandiesel*dyndns*org, under L-series engines. There are a lot of photos and caveats. * = .
The RD28 is quite a bit different. I'm not sure it mates with the L-series Z stuff, like this LD28 does. I think the RD also has an aluminum head and timing belt...the LD diesel is all cast-iron and has the standard double-wide timing chain.
Very nice!: This is STILL a sports car, by swaping this particular diesel, you have kept the weight close to stock and retained the handling and braking the 240 was famous for. The mileage must outstanding. Two thumbs up!
I love it! Don't let these whiners get you down. I don't see why anyone could have a problem with this. It's a free country and you did something unique with your classic ride, rather than the same stuff you see everywhere else (at least it's another Nissan engine).
Among other things, I drive a 1985 VW diesel Golf "GTD." It's turbocharged and intercooled. It's not quick off the line but once it gets spooled up, it's a lot of fun to pass the Honda Civic rice burners in a diesel Volkswagen.
Same here. On the highway the turbodiesel is untouchable. If you don't mind stressing your clutch with a very careful slip, you can still launch with the turbo spooled up.
If you know how to build it you can make that put out way more HP and since its the same block it weighs the same and even though it bolted right in its hella different.
@FARMSET Well, it supposedly makes those figures as soon as you strap on a nice turbocharger and give the smoke-screw a tiny little turn, which is what I did. I haven't dyno'ed it yet, the numbers are based on the two tested ones I have heard of (including a twin-turbo LD28). It's a guestimate, but the previous engine was an F54 L28 with perfectly tuned duel SUs, and the turbodiesel seems much stronger.
@golgo17 I spool a T3 on a 3.0L V6 and make over 300ft-lbs of torque @ 2800rpm and over 270hp @ 5200rpm, usable powerband from idle to 6,000rpm. Its gasoline, its best for high performance. Still a cool car though, I can't say I've never thought about doing it just to be that guy....guess its too late for me though. :)
Oh, and as the hater said, the L24 in the '70 240Z made 150hp...but yeah, still cool.
@mrZdude It's true, gasoline is still the best, but dang it, I just love the diesel anyway because of it's character (though my immediate neighbors may disagree)!
Thats what im saying, man.Proper oil and regular changes are crucial for a diesel.Besides that, not much more can go wrong than that the fuel filter clogs,or that a fuel line leaks and lets air into the system.Otherwise it will run properly.A diesel will in most cases run properly or not at all.
If done right, I believe any engine can run reliably and perform better than expected. I've never driven a diesel powered Datsun or any car. But when I saw this video, I was like "Wow! Awesome! I'd love to see more sports cars with diesel engines installed." If there's any complaint I have with the video is the music.
Nissan Diesels Ld28 are one of the best sounding diesels And very fast without a turbo.Considering Mercedes benzes of the era I have a 1982 Maxima and run it hard at 325k miles. Those engines are bulletproof and run forever.
I have had my for 16 years and only changed the oil.
Cogratulations! I love hybrid vehicles (cool cars with unusual cool motors, not a piece of shit Prius!) this is very cool..and the value is not overtly affected because it can be returned to original. About 15 years ago i use to own a 1970 240Z and loved it! I made it better by adding tripple Webers, headers and swapping the 4 speed for a 5 speed from a later 280z. If i would have thought about it i would have tryed doing the same diesel conversion as yours...Big Ups!!
thanks for the info but I will stick with a gas engine. Datsun engines were the most trouble free engines ever made so need to lower maintenance by switching to a diesel
Lower maintenance? You have to change oil twice as often and if you dont the soot inside will slowly grind it down. Its a myth that diesels are more reliable than gas engines because they are mostly used in commercial applications and recieves periodic service when they should as a routine.
u change oil more often on diesels due to fuel dilution making oil thinner mainly, the soot stays in combustion area, but u r right, u have to change it more often and diesels r usually more pricey to repair, less powerful and rattly, I still prefer them...dont know why though!
"stays in combustion area".. Have you ever dismantled a diesel engine? If you think you have had black fingers before, try that. One of the built in flaws with the old 5,7 olds diesel was splash lubrication of the cam,due to this it wears much faster due to soot deposits in the through underneath.
I suppose oil gets darker, so it must be carbon, so I'll give u that..maybe, but fuel dilution is main reason, rings wont allow carbon powder past, but I suppose if the rings r very worn u may get carbonised oil.
hmm..cant really make that figure..If the injection nozzles are ok,all fuel delivered should be burned Actually Id think big gas engines were more prone to fuel dilution,at least it said in the owners manual of an IH Travelall I had,use the choke for the least amount of time possible due to this.
Its from when u start it up cold, it takes a few strokes before it fired so injected fuel seeps past rings.
We used to have oil analysed at lab for this reason as replacing oil was about £500 on big engines, often we would leave them idle all night as it was cheaper than replacing oil.
On petrol engines petrol evapourates when oil warms up, diesel doesnt.
Its a big issue with diesels fuel dilution and the main reason to change oil.
A diesel costs less per mile to drive than its gas counterpart. Less to go wrong on them. Way more reliable. Last longer. And have oodles more torque. The only thing you lose is HP.
I never thought of doing this before but it is an awesome idea. The RD28 looks like L28 on the outside! What I don't get is how you can use diesel with out turbo and still acheive 120mph, about the same as what the l28 gets.

it sounds and looks VERY impressive. I'm admittedly amused by the in-car camera view of the acceleration run, since while the engine sounds like incredible speed is gathering, the trees aren't moving by all that quickly, am I way wrong on that?

you don't get it. a ld28 diesel engine is a piece of crap. the only thing valuable is the longer stroke crankshaft which can be used in a proper gasoline powered L series engine to increase cylinder displacement and torque of course. putting a diesel engine in a classic car like that is the most disgraceful thing you can do. Something only a tree hugging liberal would do. Diesel stinks and causes more pollution than a properly built gas engine too.
which is probably what he did the swap for if not just individuality. personally I'm all for the idea, not to mention it doesn't sound half bad either.
dear naturalthing1, u r a fag, yes he should have put a turbo on it and some other power adders but its original and you suck big dick so stfu you don't know what ur talkin bout bro
I've have/had buily many L-28 engines over the years. For non turbo, I always use and LD-28 crank because it has 83mm stroke and bore the cylinders 3mm over to 89...sometimes to 90 with sleeves and it becomes a 3.2 litter with around 400 horsepower. Very quick in a 240~280z body.
I use to own a 1971 Datsun 240-Z and instead of a whimpy six cylinder, I opted for a 428 SCJ with tri power and a Nash aluminum 5 speed. I got crap for MPG but high 10's where fun with slicks......
Major major props on that conversion. I used to own Datsun Z # 327, manufactured in Dec, 1969. The sound of the exhaust on your drive by gave me chills man. Wow. Great car.
rock on. I was looking for a turbo diesel car to save money and couldn't find much but it just happens that I have a 260z in my garage. I think this might be what I was looking for.
I have driven a REAL diesel sports car as my friend has a BMW 320 diesel m-sport.I like diesels very much because of the good mileage and with a turbo the performance is also useable.Diesels are much more common here in norway than in the us because the fuel price is 3-4 times higher and all cars bigger than "mid -sized" runs on diesel.I see many diesel vehicles every day I mean that such an engine does not belong anywhere near a sportscar! At least put a turbo on the thing!Cunt!
Hey, Good job on the swap. I am generally a believer of keeping the original engine in a car but if you are going to swap something in, at least keep it from the same auto maker. And like you said, these as such simple cars that you can swap the gas engine back in with minimal effort.
Actually since most people have never driven a diesel sports car, many feelings concerning this Z are just regurgitated crap opinions heard elsewhere.
Rollin' with the 2.8 I-6 nissan diesel is similar but subtly better in almost every way over the gas engine, also 2.8 I-6 nissan. The best part for you born-again believers of gasoline dogma: zero permanent car changes are needed for this swap, and the gas engine can be reinstalled in hours. Bitch.
You stupid bastard, you've ruined a fine 70's sportscar!Get a laurel or cedric to put that engine in!Would you put a 6,2 detroit engine in a corvette?NO!!!sportscars are about feelings and this feels all wrong.Diesels are for trucks and taxies!
i am agree, that diesel engine "maybe" performs better than the original gas engine, but hell it sounds like a truck, sorry engine swapper you have done a nice job rly, true sports cars use gas anyway, i will change my mind when a ferrari diesel appears.
Same basic engine that was factory-installed in International Scouts in 1978, 79, and with a turbo in 1980. It is just basically a diesel version of the 240-Z, 280-Z engines.
Actually, that engine's much larger than this. That was a 3.3-liter diesel six, marketed by Chrysler. That one was called the CN6-33 (the "CN" meaning "Chrysler/Nissan").
What are your HP torque numbers, I wanted to swap one in to my 280ZX, but I heard it has only 80HP what all did you do to it and if we can get in contact about it that would be great
Will the CN6-33 bolt into the 240, 260, 280Z cars?
I rode in a 280Z that was HIGHLY modified, fuel injection and turbocharged on gasoline, and the guy told me that he used the Nissan diesel crankshaft in it.
was thinking this would be a cool swap...until i walked down the street and saw the price of deisel...then i was like FACK THAT!

i had a 77 280z. not stock. l28 gas power. nice
is she quick your car
12valvepower 4 years ago
I've have/had buily many L-28 engines over the years. For non turbo, I always use and LD-28 crank because it has 83mm stroke and bore the cylinders 3mm over to 89...sometimes to 90 with sleeves and it becomes a 3.2 litter with around 400 horsepower. Very quick in a 240~280z body.

@12valvepower
I wouldn't say it was super quick, but it was...relentless. However, now that it has a turbocharger, it is definitely quick.

@golgo17

I use to own a 1971 Datsun 240-Z and instead of a whimpy six cylinder, I opted for a 428 SCJ with tri power and a Nash aluminum 5 speed. I got crap for MPG but high 10's where fun with slicks......

Great work! Please put a turbo engine in there.

Major major props on that conversion. I used to own Datsun Z # 327, manufactured in Dec, 1969. The sound of the exhaust on your drive by gave me chills man. Wow. Great car.

great job...i like how you kept it stock...

rock on. I was looking for a turbo diesel car to save money and couldn't find much but it just happens that I have a 260z in my garage. I think this might be what I was looking for.

240ZD? Nice to see somebody do something different. Would probably be an awsome cross-country racer.

All cars should have diesel engines.
SakoTGrimes 4 years ago
I used to have that engine in my 1985 Nissan Maxima very reliable. Good job!!!
DIESEL POWER FOREVER!!!
zech007 4 years ago
The diesel was not offered in the U.S.-spec Maximas after the end of 1983.

At least put a turbo on the thing!Cunt!
arvekvalvik 4 years ago
Hey, Good job on the swap. I am generally a believer of keeping the original engine in a car but if you are going to swap something in, at least keep it from the same auto maker. And like you said, these as such simple cars that you can swap the gas engine back in with minimal effort.
DigitalRadius 4 years ago
Actually since most people have never driven a diesel sports car, many feelings concerning this Z are just regurgitated crap opinions heard elsewhere.
Rollin' with the 2.8 I-6 nissan diesel is similar but subtly better in almost every way over the gas engine, also 2.8 I-6 nissan. The best part for you born-again believers of gasoline dogma: zero permanent car changes are needed for this swap, and the gas engine can be reinstalled in hours. Bitch.
golgo17 4 years ago
You stupid bastard, you've ruined a fine 70's sportscar!Get a laurel or cedric to put that engine in!Would you put a 6,2 detroit engine in a corvette?NO!!!sportscars are about feelings and this feels all wrong.Diesels are for trucks and taxies!
arvekvalvik 4 years ago
i am agree, that diesel engine "maybe" performs better than the original gas engine, but hell it sounds like a truck, sorry engine swapper you have done a nice job rly, true sports cars use gas anyway, i will change my mind when a ferrari diesel appears.
tamakisanmafia 4 years ago
THIS IS GREAT! Wow...you are absolutely HAULING on that run. What kind of mileage do you usually get?
colhunt76 4 years ago
Same basic engine that was factory-installed in International Scouts in 1978, 79, and with a turbo in 1980. It is just basically a diesel version of the 240-Z, 280-Z engines.
JGMagoo 4 years ago
Actually, that engine's much larger than this. That was a 3.3-liter diesel six, marketed by Chrysler. That one was called the CN6-33 (the "CN" meaning "Chrysler/Nissan").
ClassicTVFan82 4 years ago
You pulled this engine from either a 1981-1/2, '82 or '83 Maxima, if I am reading this correctly.
ClassicTVFan82 4 years ago
What are your HP torque numbers, I wanted to swap one in to my 280ZX, but I heard it has only 80HP what all did you do to it and if we can get in contact about it that would be great
nbesheer 4 years ago
For information look here...
nissandiesel >dot< dyndns >dot< org
The torque makes up for the supposedly low HP numbers. All I can say is BMWs are always in my way on the interstate.
golgo17 4 years ago
who would have thought? ...a 240Z powered by a diesel...exhaust sounds good...no obvious rust on the body...nice project golgo17
florian116 4 years ago
The original 2.4 liter 6-cyl gas engine used in the 240Z was also the 810 and Maxima's engine.
ClassicTVFan82 4 years ago
Will the CN6-33 bolt into the 240, 260, 280Z cars?
I rode in a 280Z that was HIGHLY modified, fuel injection and turbocharged on gasoline, and the guy told me that he used the Nissan diesel crankshaft in it.
JGMagoo 4 years ago
I don't know, probably not without extensive framework due to the overall size of the 3.3.
