THE BEGINNING OF THE SONG MAKES ME REFLECT ON ALL THE SERVICE MEMBERS WHO FOUGHT AND DIED FOR AMERICA!!! I'M DROPPING TEARS JUST WRITING THIS POST NOW!!!
As a Boy Scout some 40 years ago I walked the field of Pickett's charge and stood at the the Angle. The feeling I felt then stays with me to this day.
The other track of "Gettysburg Soundtrack: Fife and Gun" I thought that was based on a real Civil War Army tune and not Randy Edelman. Its gorgeous but just was curious. Anyone know for sure?
"there's many a man worse than me, and some better. But I don't think race or country matters a damn. What matters, Colonel.....is justice. Which is why I'm here. I'll be treated as I deserve....not as my father deserved. I'm Kilrain, and I damn all gentleman. There's only one aristocracy, and that (TAPS TEMPLE) is right here.....and that's why we've got to win this war..."
@SilverAntique13 hey im 20 and been in this for 10yrs and always wanted to go to gettysburg always no matter what but when i graduated high school my dream didnt happen but once i get married it will that be my gift from my future wife and go see the ghosts there!
“It is all the better that the war was fought, even though our cause went down in defeat. The struggle has left a heritage of brave deeds, a history of heroic endurance, of fidelity to country and home and fireside for the whole American nation, North and South, to cherish.”
The real problems for the South came after Gettysburg,Meade let lee's army leave the field and did not pursue him for 3 days, There was never an attempt to get behind lee, and cut him off before he reached the potomac; had that happend, lee would have been forced to consider if the war was still worth fighing with the forces had aval. lee escaped, and the war continued. lee was an engineer, he knew defenses and the one he set up to guard his crossing into va was a beauty.
@Finback353 He still had Longstreet, but he was mostly a defensive type of commander, hence he said the attack at Gettysburg was a monumental bad idea. Which it was. Lee still had AP Hill who was quite a capable commander. Too bad they didn't bring Braxton Bragg east, he was doing well in the west.
The one thing that grates on my eyes every time I watch this film is the really obese Southern troops. Why did they put so many of them up front? Few people were obese in those days and we all know the Southern Soldiers were going without many meals by then. Sometimes the music is too beautiful to depict men dying violently, my other little problem with an otherwise great film.
@gamespyers What is sad that there would have been larger repercussions had the South won the Battle of Gettysburg and none of it favorable for either North or South.
Geo-politics indicate that even if the South had won, the repeated defeats in the West and ever weakening Southern infrastructure all round would have collapsed the South even afterward and truthfully, the British and French, had they gotten involved would have only pushed the other powers into the US camp creating a world war.
Awesome movie, and Randy Edelmen was the best choice for music in this movie. I' always loved Gettysburg, a he just made it better. Thanks for this upload.

@Braincase43 Beautiful, wasn't it. I am not a Virginian, but my ancestors came to Virginia first before moving west into Kentucky. That speech highlighted that Virginia in particular, and the South in general, had a lot to do with the founding of the USA, and did not frivously secede from the union it helped create. Such brave soldiers every one.
to you king George III: 'Give me liberty or give me death.' There are boys here from Portsmouth, Norfolk, small hamlets along the James River, from Charlottesville and Fredericksburg, and the Shenandoah Valley. Mostly they are all veteran soldiers now. The cowards and shirkers are long gone. Every man here knows his duty. They would make this charge even without an officer to lead them. They know the gravity of the situation and the mettle of their foe. They know that this day's work will be

You're an idealist, praise be. The truth is, Colonel, there is no divine spark. There's many a man alive of no more value than a dead dog, believe me, when ye've seen 'em hang each other the way I have, back in the Old Country.
thats why i said we have to FIND away. NOT i kno the way lol. I feel as though i was cheated by not gettin to be in "Gettysburg". I was like 4 when they were filming it.
Not that i can really think of. IT have to have a soundtrack like this one, and itd have to cover a short amount of time. Gods and generals shouldnt have covered that long a span. But Gettysburg did alright. Maybe something about the surrender of the ANV. They could cover that in 3 and a half to four hours.
The problem with G&G was that it didn't cover enough. There is a huge gap between First Mannassas and Fredricksburg. A gap filled by nothing in the film.
Do u UNDERSTAND how rediculously long that would make that film??? I mean i kno its based on the trilogy by Jeff Shaharra(or however u spell his name). But i think a new trilogy should be made on each individual Campaign. And with each movie their should be an unerlying theme(the hardships, the boredom Etc etc.) Im tellin ya, with the right people produceing it and good actors, the Civil War would sale. And hopefully make people remember those who made the supreme sacrifice.
Absolutely, I agree...people need to know more of what actually happened in the Civil War/War of Northern Aggression. It should be told and historically correct. So may people have the wrong idea of what it was all about. Books, depending where you live, are printed
incorrectly. To those who gave the supreme sacrifice, the "Killer Angels", it needs to be told correctly to all to see. Just like the series "Roots", made for TV series which was watched by millions.
Didn't they film Antietam for the film, but cut it out of the theatrical release? IMHO, G&G would have been a better mini-series with the extra battle included. I think the director's cut was included on the DVD but I haven't seen it.
You guys need to contact Mr. Turner ,who is said to have backed the "Gettysburg," & "God and Generals" movies the last book in this trilogy is "Last Full Measure" which is awesome in that it is about Grant and Lee and the months before
the end of the war, ,Petersburg, Richmond, and the months prior to Appomattox, and the end of the war. In the Gods & Generals, movie look at the man speaking to John Bell Hood ,in the part where they are all singing "Bonnie Blue Flag, anybody recognize him? :)
No...I am referring to Mr Ted Turner. His cameo role in the movie. That is him talking to John Belle Hood at the gathering of the confederate troops for a show that Hood arranged and they sat around singing "The Bonnie Blue Flag. Turner, is said to be a big "Civil War Buff". I'm told he was also in the movie , "Gettysburg" as a character in the background.
I knew he was in the scene too. George Allen (he of the "macaca" infamy in 2006) was also in the scene. IIRC Senator Harry Byrd was also in the movie.
Back to Ted Turner, he was shown several times in Gettysburg as Colonel Patton. He gets killed right after Armistead implores his brigade to push toward the High Water Mark at the wall.
In regards to this, I have emailed and been in contact with Mr. Jeff Shaara, author of the last two books in the trilogy, G&G and The Last Full Measure. He has explained to me that Ted Turner has completely backed out of the project and until another financial backer comes forth...the film will not be made.
That's to bad, because the last book was about the end of the war with Grant & Lee . Shaara gives a balanced experience of the temperament, sensibility, and character of generals on both sides of the battle lines. of the horrific battles that took place as Grant and Lee struggled for superiority in the field. The battle of Cold Harbor, Petersburg, on to Appomattox , and the end of the War.
In my opinion, the best bet to get something going would be to write. Write senators who advocate history, write film directors and producers. They complain about costs yet so much of the cost is lowered because the re-enacting community comes out in force. The Last Full Measure needs to be made, the American people deserve it.
I think that is a great Idea! Someone suggested writing Newt Gingrich. He and co-author William R. Forstchen wrote novel named "Gettysburg" and "Never Call Retreat", which was on the New York Times Bestsellers List. It is also a novel of the Civil War and compared to being as good as "The Killer Angels" by Michael Shaara's but in my opinion, not quite true! Although, definitely some good reading. it is popular historical fiction but follows close to the truth.
I fear we may never see the film, the actors are aging, and if no one steps up soon, I fear we may lose some of our most beloved "soldiers" from the Civil War trilogy. Something must be done, if I had the money - I'd see to it.
sorry, but history movies aren't big at the moment. People today are into mindless actiony movies such as transformers and the fast and the furious. I did like Valkyie and Defiance. But civil war and revolutionary war movies are for those who respect past events. Most people today ignore our past and only live in the present. This is why "The Patriot" is the only revolutionary war movie I can think of, even though that war founded one of the most powerful and important nations in the world.
you are right, but i think a lot of people are just stupid or ignorant to give a damn. theres no point in making another civil war movie when some like 30% of the population knows what it was about.
Interestingly enough, there's a movie coming out entitled 'The Last Full Measure', but it has nothing to do with Jeff Shaara's book or the Civil War. Instead, it's about some guy with the Medal of Honor or something. It was interesting because I expected it to be the follow-up to G&G, but then when I saw Bruce Willis cast, I knew that it wasn't to be.
He would look would a bit goofy in 1860's clothing and facial hair, don't ya think?
Hahaha, yeah he sure would. One way or the other, "The Last Full Measure" must be made on picture! By the way, which of the two movies do you like best, Gettysburg or G&G?
I can agree on the acting, but the music - the music of G&G is wonderful, it has some of the best pieces of music in film history. However, it is true what you say, their ambitions exceded their capabilities.
Awesome book that should be made into a Movie or mini series for T.V. To bad the man who produced "Cold Mountain", has passed. That was also a great movie and a true story! Enman, was actually a real person with a Civil War Record...he was from the foothills of the Smokey Mountain's area of North Carolina. It's to bad they chose to film that movie overseas , instead of on location where it really took place. Great movie , but sad ending ;however, realistic of the time.
That's a very good Idea! You could start with Re-en-actors! Those are the guys who could get the ball rolling , there's strength in numbers it is said and there are a lot of you guys who are dedicated to portraying the Civil War , right... The SVC groups , just a matter of getting them all involved. There were also a lot of famous battles fought in the "West" as well , like Shiloh, Franklin, Chickamauga, just to name a few.
Sorry guys who are "Sons of Confederate Veterans". A typing mistake.... It's "SCV"!We are all so proud of you and your ancestors who fought for what they believed was right..... I love this movie and the music only enhances it more. Beautiful, soulful , and touches the Heart of all mankind.
Heard an interesting idea today...a fellow I was talking with said that if LFM was made, Stephen Lang should play Ulysses S. Grant...it kind of sets you back at first, but it's not impossible.
Great grandson of a confederate and union officer. Save our history from those whom would rather forget it. For it is what shapes our society. It makes us proud and gives us our distinction.

Tmas1833 2 years ago
Most people know about WW2 as well, yet every year comes new titles.

Yet "The Patriot" is a violation to the memory of the revolutionary war. The only thing correct about it is the uniforms. All else is fiction.

dont forgot any movie that has relation to the end of the world O.o
i would love a third installment in the series, i only just found out that gettysburg isnt the movie

Civil War trilogy? Isn't there only Gettsburg and Gods and generals?, is there another one?

"The last full meassure", the movies are based on a book-trilogy, and the above mentioned is the last of them.

Mast3rFr3aky 2 years ago
Hahaha, yeah he sure would. One way or the other, "The Last Full Measure" must be made on picture! By the way, which of the two movies do you like best, Gettysburg or G&G?
Faxe90Swe 2 years ago
Gettysburg. It's not as fragmented as G&G and not as melodramatic.
Mast3rFr3aky 2 years ago 5
It is the melodramatism that I like with G&G =)
Faxe90Swe 2 years ago
most definitely Gettysburg. They tried too hard in G&G to make it epic with lots of crappy music. Also the acting in Gettysburg is WAY better.
defender508 1 year ago
@defender508
I can agree on the acting, but the music - the music of G&G is wonderful, it has some of the best pieces of music in film history. However, it is true what you say, their ambitions exceded their capabilities.
Faxe90Swe 1 year ago
@Faxe90Swe Gettysburg is vastly superior in every regard, G&G was doomed from the beginning, Gettysburg covers 4 days while G&G covers 3 years
JoeZeon100 1 year ago
@JoeZeon100 Or is it that Gettysburg depicts a battle which the Union won, while G&G show something else? Just messing with you.
The time span of a movie doesn´t necessarily make it a bad one by default.
Faxe90Swe 1 year ago
Do you know when that movie will be on DVD?

Maybe a petition would help.

SoBelleofTN 2 years ago
Sorry guys who are "Sons of Confederate Veterans". A typing mistake.... It's "SCV"!We are all so proud of you and your ancestors who fought for what they believed was right..... I love this movie and the music only enhances it more. Beautiful, soulful , and touches the Heart of all mankind.

Heard an interesting idea today...a fellow I was talking with said that if LFM was made, Stephen Lang should play Ulysses S. Grant...it kind of sets you back at first, but it's not impossible.

He's an excellent actor. I think he'd nail it.

Great grandson of a confederate and union officer. Save our history from those whom would rather forget it. For it is what shapes our society. It makes us proud and gives us our distinction.
