  • my teach says the opposite... you HAVE to use your neck to hold the violin

  • Thank you, this helped me :)

  • u make it look so easy have u been playing ever since u were a kid. if u were what age did u start at.

  • Thanks a lot!!! You sound great!!! :)

  • There's no hope for me after watching this.

  • He makes scales look cool...

  • Come on, i respect you and everything... but you're making us feel bad.

  • Why would you dislike this video?

  • try showing off a little less in your videos

  • nice playing, lose the dodgy shirt.

  • harder than it looks...

  • Thanks for showing how to hold it; I've just started trying to teach myself and holding it without twisting either my wrist or my neck around 15 times was almost impossible until I saw this :D

  • damn! you killed me on the violin!!! your video is very helpful so thanks!!!

  • He is soooo good at the violin... Wow and I thought I was good. -__-

  • Love

  • wow u are so good. it was a great tip, holding it with your left hand.

  • :OO ke bn tocas ke envidia

  • Nice one mate, understood

  • Have just taken up the violin again [age 53!]. Your explanations are fabulously clear and useful. Exceptional playing too of course.

  • ARGH !!!!!!!

  • Jees, this guy's good.

  • this is the easiest tutorial i've seen. because he actually gave science in all of is explanation.

  • holy crap.

  • wow you make it look soo easy!! :P

  • See where the F Holes Are? Lol'd.

  • Little Groove. LOL. Thats wat i heard

  • Lol, "I don't have a whole lot of flesh." XD

  • i know how to virbrato but not like you your bomb at it

  • when i do vibrato, my left foot shakes and taps the ground i dont know why?!? it is like my left foot responses my left hand that's doing a vibrato LOL

  • This video was extremely helpful. I'm a beginner on violin, but I've been playing bass (electric) and guitar for 14 years. I have a very good understanding of the instrument, I just need to work on my intonation and bow-technique for the most part.

But aside from that, this video just addressed about 4 other issues I've been having. So thank you very much

  • 4:27 - 4:31 hahahahah "and then when i vibrate and it gets more intense, its vibrating into my......into my..uh......"

  • that is amazing!!!

  • OMFG! When i do it i end up shaking the damn violin lol.

  • Question: Is the Shoulder rest required before learning vibrato?

Answer: No, actually, shoulder rest feels very uncomfortable to me.

  • is the shoulder rest required before learning vibrato?

  • Is a shoulder rest required to do this?

  • The only guy I know as good as you is Henri.

  • does a vibrato beginner/trying-hard like me need a shoulder rest?

  • I like your eyebrows!!! :D

  • asians are good at EVERYTHING!!!!

  • @Zendayalover44 no dur, im asian

  • @Zendayalover44 Have you seen an asian when he drives a car ? Anyway good video

  • @turkbros actually, we're just extremely evasive and fast drivers. cause have you (guessing you drive in a civilized manner [like in America]) ever driven a car in a developing asian country? all joking aside: if you do ever visit one, i'd recommend you let the natives drive you around. seriously.

  • @Zendayalover44

I'm asian and i have NO skill at all at anything...>m<

  • @Zendayalover44 How racist

  • @mooniusss Its a compliment dumbass

  • I used to play the violin in 6th and a little bit in 7th but then i moved and ever since then i stopped playing because my scchool didn't have orchestra. I'm a junior now and i want to play again but i don't remember anything at all.... do you think i can?

  • @lmaominh I did the same exact thing, I picked it right back up again in my soph year

  • @lmaominh Of course you can!

  • que increible tienes un manejo excelente del instrumento WOW. FELICITACIONES

  • what size is your violin

i think my problem is that mines to small. i have a 4/4 though but my older brother plays viola in highschool and says i need a bigger one. how do i kno if i do need to up a size

  • @TheSuperbasser 4/4 is full size you cant get anything bigger for violin, a 4/4 is way to small for me but thats just how the violin is.

  • i Can't do It because my violin is heavy. urg. :(

  • :O what now?

  • hiatuss

  • genious!!!!!!!

  • you make me look like an idiot in violin

  • @papabunzpin dude ikr :/

  • @papabunzpin Of course, he's asian!

  • @papabunzpin ONG YES!!!

    X3

  • Seems you would be more comfortable with a center-mounted chinrest, since you rest your chin right over the tailpiece.

  • Comment removed

  • i still cant do it...... D':

  • You are amazing!!!!!!!

  • WE HAVE THE SAME VIOLIN MODEL!:O

By the way, I already knew vibrato before watching this, but I wanted to brush up a bit on my technique, it being Summer. This was very helpful-- and you're very good at playing! xD

  • Hi, whts the song that u played at 3:09???????

  • oh my it's so hard to do!

  • your scales...are like PERFECT. It send me chills, im serious. I hope i can play that well next time...

  • I've always had the problem with my right hand's pinky. I don't know why buy it locks up and starts to hurt. Can anyone help me with this problem?

  • Thank you <3

  • My teacher tells me to role my finger... Is that wrong?

  • @miukiblue yess

  • @moonamigi the movement should come from the wrist, not the knuckle, unlike guitar

  • @hXc232 Why do you say where it should come from? You know the only thing that counts is where your finger is on the string...

I don't get it? Some say it is from the elbow, some say from the wrist and some say most important is the finger bending....Yet... If you watch some do this motion it seems the movement distributes 'fairly'&'naturally' between the three. So... why is this still being argued in 2011...I think it is because people are more focused on being right than just playing. Lol

  • @Imgonnausethisname I think it all depends on what kind of tone you need and what kind of color you need from the violin.

  • @Imgonnausethisname No, there are two kinds of violin vibrato, wrist vibrato being the most common and generally best sounding one, but a skilled player will use both depending on the situation, but you CANNOT use finger vibrato, it sounds horrendous on a violin because it is fretless and all you can hear is the string grinding on the fingerboard, so no, it has nothing to with being right, but it does have everything to do with not sounding like shit.

  • can uhelp me with the note of "templanza" is from a violin player named arcano can u help me? i want to give it to my mom who is taking violin lessons and she love that song please!

  • Hola! tus videos son asombrosos.....pero......si buscas alguien que hable español y te ayude a traducirlo subtitulado....eso sería genial!!!!...así podríamos aprovecharlo al máximo todos aquellos que no manejamos del todo el ingles!!!!

  • Damn you're very good. Each day I think I get worse and worse at playing the violin, I don't know why

  • HOLY CRAP. how did you do those scales so fast ? 0_____0

  • Ben, what kind of violin do you play on? Thanks.

    ?;^)

  • @L4sleeko Found it - 1761 Nicolol Gagliano for those who want to know. Didn't realise the questions went back as far as they did. Page 58 @ bottom.

    ?;^o

  • HELP! i just cant do it, im so frustrated

  • OK!! THANKS A LOT!!!!!!!!!

  • What?? Backward??? Foward??? What?????

  • Anyone know what chin rest ben is using here?

  • @221Dw A guarneri chinrest. Shar sells a lot of different models. Don't ask me how I know, LoL. I've been experimenting with a lot of different ones lately.

    ?;^)

  • @L4sleeko Ah yes I think your right, thanks.

  • @221Dw You're welcome.

    ?;^)

  • If I lift my Violin up by the neck with my left hand the body bit slides of my neck and I can't keep it there without clamping it down with my chin. I don't have a shoulder rest, Is Vibrato easier with a shoulder rest and should I invest in one?

  • @AlexT1994 YES. a violin or viola is almost impossible to play properly without a shoulder rest. the reason you can't stop clamping down is because you're not using one.

  • Comment removed

  • i just tryed it once... but my arms don't want to work together :(

  • i had a woogi xD

  • I noticed that you put your chin toward the center of the violin. Have you ever considered using a Flesch model? I just put one on my violin and they are quite comfortable.

    ?;^)

  • How long have you played violin for?

  • @09Suzaku MY QUESTION EXACTLY

  • your awesome. but i can't move my knuckle right. Can you give me some tips :/

  • geez your my idol! sooo goodd!!!

  • Very nice video. Always like people who can take something technical and make it simple.

  • @CalebTheObjective oh... I actually knew that that was your intention. Just couldn't resist making a comment with the word "fucking" in it after I saw your's.

Anyway, sorry that you misunderstood my meaning, I didn't misunderstand your's.

    uh... bye.

  • Thanks Ben, this has really cleared up a lot of questions that I had. You not only explain what to do, but also why you do it.

    ?;^D

  • Still can't do it.. I tried doing the backwards motion with my finger, instead my viola started shaking even if I have my neck on it and my finger started burning

  • I am awed but this, but at the same time losing confidence. Tomorrow, I have a violin recital (been playing for 5 months) and I'm looking at videos to maybe improve my tone and everything. People will expect more of a 17 year old... How long have you been playing?

  • when you do your vibrato on your third finger, do you use them altogether? I do it but I'm not quite sure I'm doing it right. :/

  • Comment removed

  • @CalebTheObjective:

They work fucking hard to do so.

  • @wirlysourpineapples i don't think many people get the humor... im not downing them, if anything im saying that they are great at what they apply themselves too, im not too sure where you live and honestly i don't care to know, but where im from Asians in my town are the hard workers and the achievers. I may have been targeting the wrong audience when i posted that comment after seeing the responses to it.

  • @wirlysourpineapples that they do. Did you think i was downing them?

  • olá, por favor pode colocar esse video em PORTUGÊS ?

  • Great tutorial! Love it. But, do you really wear your plaid shirt buttoned up like that? Just kidding. Thank for the tutorial.

  • Fucking asians do excell at everything -.-

  • @CalebTheObjective

are you jealous? lol. They do work really hard. Theres only one asian first chair in the whole sixth grade orchestra of 50 ppl at my school.

  • @HorsiesYay Nah, im not jealous im basically saying, in my own words, that "Asians are good at what they do because they seem to be the type of people that actually apply themselves, i realize that some don't, and that other people of other races do as well." but I'm lazy so i just thumbs up'd the video and said "Fucking asians do excel at everything -.-" honestly i don't know why people think I'm downing this, maybe try to see that theres more than one way to take the comment.

  • those scales are like chuck norris would've done them.

  • you are one great violin instructor, I mean, you teach the viewers step-by-step which really helps, A LOT !! Keep it up ! :)

  • alguem pode colocar legenda? someone can put a legend here?

  • AHH!! YOU'RE SO AWESOME!!

  • Nice lol at how you pronounce vibrato though

  • DX My orchestra teachers always told us NOT to hold our violins with our hands AT ALL. Dern it, why did both my orchestra teachers have to be cellists?!

  • wow your scales are AWESOME!!!

  • My teacher told me to shake a tic tac case

  • OMG!! This will sooo help me in class! Thx! =D

  • thx very much for you teaching

  • my mouth dropped open when you played scales.

  • VIOLAS!!!

  • can't do the vibrato T.T

  • @mockingjayable this is how i practice it: play a note, let's say B on the A string. Then i slide to the B flat and back to B. it will sound horrible, i know!! but u will get it, i promise!! all u gotta do is try to go faster and then BE RELAXED! once u can go fast, then u can do vibrato. the first time when i practiced that i was like omg, it sounds horrible!! its ok!

  • @isakuralover thanks much :)..it really sounds horrible at first

  • My violin teacher tells me to keep your violin steady with your neck so that your violin doesn't just wobble back and forth when I'm trying to vibrato.

Does anyone else do it that way?

  • WoW!

  • Woow I´m Amazed can you send me that scale for practicing please...

  • This is amazing, you explained perfectly exactly those things I'm having trouble with. Thank you!

  • 2:45 O_O

    sigh im still begginner lol

  • no matter how hard i try my finger wont shake to creat vibration...... alot of people told i need a teach but FUCK i dont have money....... everything nowadays are not free.... you can even buy love.... gezzzz.......

  • do u slide ur finger back and fort to create a vibration??? i cant see it on the vid.... or u just wable ur finger?

  • @darkj3am It should just wobble on the pad of the finger. No sliding of the finger is necessary :)

  • abla demasiado amarillo d m....

  • Awesomeeee!

  • Thank you for the lesson. How long did it take you to master vibrato?

  • Thank you for the lesson.

  • Thank for your time Ben, nice tutorial

  • Very helpful to see there needs to be a gap in my left hand when positioning my fingers.

  • every time i seen my uncle i felt bad cuz he brought me a violin 4 xmas 4 years ago and i didnt know how to playit so i am going to start now lol

  • should use the shake weight to practice vibrato

  • I am approaching grade 6 violin, and I still have no knowledge whatsoever in vibrato. Is that bad?

  • @rvb23 It's not bad, but the sooner you learn it and become used to it the better.

  • @rvb23 same here. I got to grade 6 without learning it. Was going to be one of the things I did next but left school first!

  • Excellent teacher!!!

  • Thank you, this taught me some useful things.

  • This taught me some things that are useful.

  • ummm when you do the "vibrato" on the violin, do u do the "vibrato" when it says so on the music sheet or you choose to do it?

  • >< Even your scales are awesome.

  • is there a difference between arm and wrist vibrato

  • is the shoulder rest required to vibrato like this?

  • its very hard move the hands like you when you do vibrato i cant do this i dont know why.

  • wow thanks i have trouble with the vibrato this will help me a lot :)

  • where is the location of your violin microphone?

  • I wanna ask you something, when you do the vibrato, does your finger slide on the bridge at your touching point or your finger was fixed still only shaking back and forth? I'm having trouble learning this trick

  • What a show-off lol

The suckish part is that I don't have a good shoulder rest, my teacher gave me a sponge -__- 4 years and my shoulders are killing me.

  • Beautiful violin. I'mma sophomore, and I have been trying to do a vibrato for years. My teacher tried showing me and it make no sense. BUT! YOU! Made it simpler. Thank you, Ben:)

  • I would like to make a request Mr. Ben Chan. I would like to request that you play the song "F**K You" by Cee Lo Green and make a tutorial and sheet music. Thanks. By the way I've been playing the violin since 4th grade and now I'm a sophomore in college.

  • @TheActionGuy1 i love that song so much!!! i totally agree that he should play that song!!!! XD

  • vibrato is hard

  • ben chan you are god.

  • How long have you been playing? Wow that scale was amazing, and fast and perfect! I wish I could play that good.

  • I don't know but I can be sure that his violin is not made in China.

  • @dumbbell1231 how can you be so sure? 80% of voilins in the world were made in Beijing

  • oohh... you are amazing! I play on the violin, too.. but i can't play with vibro ;( I try learn from you. ;)

  • this is actually a really helpful video .. i got it after almost a week

  • Thank you! Very informative.

  • Would this work for a viola to?? o.o

And how long did it take you to learn how to vibrato??

  • My God im dying to learn Vibrato... :((
