I never get hit in the rear because I never follow the car in front of me too close and I always warn the person at the back im about to brake by tapping lightly on the brake to light up my rear brake lights. If i see no response I gradually engine brake or get the hell out of the way. Being aware of your surroundings makes a big difference.
