Oh, my goodness! No percussion pit? No "amped" soloists? No singers or dancers? No costume changes? Start on one end and end on the other.?? How did they ever do it?? OLD SCHOOL
Fantastic...great memories of my travels following the Sky! They were and always will be the best in my book! Traffic Jam was an amazing trademark...The Elks Parade was fantastic...Thanks for the great memories!
I saw the Skyliners for the first time in 1970 at the Hershey, PA show. Pepe Nataro played a solo in the Flight of the Bumble Bee. In 71 Sky won the DCA. I will never forget the photos that appeared in Drum Corps News in the next issue. Three pics. Joe Genero and Jimmy Russo, standing proudly after the prelim show with the number one salute. Next was a photo of Walter Winkleman with the caption... But Winkie Knows !
I love the Skyliners. Don't ever quit playing, Nobody else can do it like you.
I saw Sky win The Dream in '72. What a show!!!! It was very hot that day and I remember the smiles on their faces as they came of the field at Roosevelt. My drum instructor was in the snareline and it was such a thrill for me as I was only 13. As good as they were in this DCA Finals clip, they were smokin' at the Dream and won with a record breaking 92.25!!!!
I think that the structural damage the Crusaders, Hurcs, Cabs and especially SKY inflicted on it this particular night was the main reason Roosevelt Stadium had to be eventually torn down ;-)
@fottyfoop Great observation! Best year for Sr. Drum Corps ever. I was lucky enough to march with Hawthorne that year. Everybody was excellent. Took us all season to catch up (which we did in Waverley NY). But you forgot the Sunrisers. Listen to their show, outstanding!
Without going into a huge article here, the first thing you notice is the small color guard which wasn't the forte of most senior corps of the times. That gave you more opening in the horn and drum lines. Count them and you may find 70 horns on the field and they were good and they were loud. Real loud. And notice that every drum is being carried? I think that some of the best drum solos I every saw came from those 25 to 30 piece sections.
This is The Skyliners, this is their heart and soul in one small video clip, and the audience will always love the music and the attitude that Sky had and will always have.
Raw emotion and visceral impact are the elements present in this that are missing in a lot of modern drum corps, especially in the juniors. Because of the current judging and show design philosophy, they're more concerned with aesthetic and intellectual effect than with emotional effect.
they had 16 snares. but they were labeled snare 1 and snare 2. They were playing the same parts but sometimes playing different parts.
