Boy are you paranoid. Denzel Washington is a great actor who got his due, & quite fankly, should've been ashamed to portray Ruben Carter. Ruben Carter is guilty of the crimes he was accused of. Not only does evidence show that, the DA in Paterson made Ruben a deal in 1976: take a lie detector test, if it comes back that you're telling the truth I'll drop all chargers. If not, it doesn't matter since polygraphs aren't admissable in court. The DA would've dropped the charges if he'd passed.
If Ruben were really innocent he would've accepted that deal. As an actor, Denzel had an obligation to research that case thoroughly. If he had he wouldn't have come to the conclusion Ruben was innocent. There is police corruption and many innocents, both black & white, have been railroaded by crooked cops, but if you're gonna make an inspirational movie about a man fighting for his freedom having to go up against an unfair system you've got to make certain that man is innocent.

They quoted someone on the committee who had to remain nameless (for obvious reasons). Denzel and Russell were neck & neck with the voters. Absolutely neck & neck. Then Russell Crowe made some awful remarks about something...continuing to be his usual rude self. And that's when they decided to give it Denzel who not only had a great performance but class as well.

Maybe he shouldn't have won for Training Day (even though his acting was as always flawless), he absolutely more than deserved to win best actor for The Hurricane and Malcolm X, this was a small consolation prize for being robbed twice in the 90's. Denzel & Sidney are my idols, 2 of the greatest actors of all time, both in the top 10.

@bo0oho0o denzel was not stolen in these two cases. his performance on Cry Freedom and training day are much better than in malcolm x, which has more history and controversy that interpretation. role in the hurricane is common and simple.

Unfortunately, the Oscars are more of a life achievement thing. That's why Al Pacino won best Oscar for Scent of a Woman instead of The Godfather Part II. That's why Denzel Washington won for Training Day instead of Malcolm X.

Denzel is probs the best actor in history, love all his movies, and believe he's deserved oscars for several of his performances, but as much as i loved training day, and as quality as he was in it, this oscar really should have gone to will smith for his portrayal of ali, one of the finest acting performances formany years and smiths best by far!

Because the Academy is made up of dumbasses. Al should have won the Oscar for Godfather part 2, and Denzel should have won for Malcolm X. He's sooooooooooo much better in Malcolm X than Training Day. Don't get me wrong, his performance was raw and entertaining, but he was a god in Malcolm X.

I would like to take a moment to remember one of the greatest actors in history. He starred in such movies as I am Legend, Pulp Fiction, the Matrix trilogy, he was the unforgettable Donkey in Shrek, along with Marty the Zebra in Madagascar, as well as God in Bruce Almighty. RIP Denzel Washington.

@roelofke85 You're out of your element. Denzel is a great actor who has got snubbed by the Academy in the past, which is sad. No one is disputing that his role in Training Day wasn't great. However, when you watch what Russel Crowe did in A Beautiful Mind you are witnessing something beyond simply acting, it is the performance of his lifetime, and some would say one of the best of all time. With all respect to Denzel, but his role in Training Day doesn't even compare to what Crowe did. Politics.

@shaq4everdominant I disagree although politics did factor in in a way. I read several article commentaries after this win. They quoted someone on the committee who had to remain nameless (for obvious reasons). Denzel and Russell were neck & neck with the voters. Absolutely neck & neck. Then Russell Crowe made some awful remarks about something...continuing to be his usual rude self. And that's when they decided to give it Denzel who not only had a great performance but class as well.
