  • What a world-class racing facility they have there. For such an advanced nation (technology-wise) one waddling marshall with a small fire-extinguisher is all that came out onto the track to stop a car from exploding.

  • Thats exactly the same weather as for the 2007 F1 race here. And there were loads of wrecks in the F1 race too. Just stupid to race with that much fog. Should have been a red flag.

  • Do these run nitromethane or something? thats a hell of a fireball

  • @BlackandChrome NO, they run with unleaded petrol only.

But the fact was both the Porsche 911 and the Ferrari F355 F1 are rear-engined cars so that their fuel cells are in the front.

And that shunt was so brutal that the cells failed.

  • Shinichi Yamaji is a hero! He didn't care about the race but he care about other person's life. I'm proud because there's a person like him. =)

  • The RE Amemiya RX-7 driven by Shinichi Yamaji stopped in front of the Ferrari while the other cars drove on. Yamaji used a fire extinguisher from his own car to extinguish the fire and then helped to release Ota's safety harness. He did this before race marshals arrived

  • 1. why would you race a super sports car race on a heavy rain day.

    2. why put out a small fire when someone obviously injured is crawling for help

    3. after these accidents, they should have just cancelled the race.

i miss ota on the track but at least hes a commentator for ferrari now.

the yellow car driver is yamaji and his RX7. RESPECT AND LOVE THAT MAN AND HIS RX7!!!

  • @510musicmaker 1 races are rarely canceled because of the rain, they are only shortened from time to time.

2 because you never know the fuel tank might explode as long as the fire is not stopped

    :D

  • @mouloudo oh. makes sense. still. with so much rain like this, they wouldve known something bad wouldve happened and it did.

  • @510musicmaker yeah, but it's the crew that sucked big time, drivers wear fireproof suits that can protect them from the heat for like 30 seconds, he spent 90 secs in his car, that's way too slow, and they handle him like a dummy and remove his neck protection without even knowing if his neck or whatever is ok, if he had eternal damages, handling him like that could have killed him

  • @mouloudo This race actually was cancelled from the weather.

  • Comment removed

  • @510musicmaker 1) in those days, races took place even if it was raining heavily even if that was in Japan

  • You can see the glow of the explosion at 4:07

There must have been a huge water puddle on the race track in order to make three cars spin off the track on that same straight.

  • @Chase16016 in fact it was a mistake of the pacecar, driving too fast, and braking hard at the end of the straight making cars spin everywhere, you can see the lien of cars " pile up" just before the crash

  • 4:07 - you can see the glow from the fire in the top left, horrible....

  • "SAVE THE PORSCHE FIRST !! " says the marshall

that yellow car driver is a hero

  • thats mad, one minute u just see a bmw off the track, camera changes, theres an explosion covering the whole track... mad, and to think that the greatest country in the world for saftey would treat it such a shit way? good cars, good people... shit reactions and training

  • the driver who stopped deserves an award

  • @FarmACDCFreak , The RX7 driver was Shinichi Yamaji. Indeed that man needs to recognised for his act of bravery, it is in the same category as Mike Hailwood's rescue of Clay Regazzoni at Kyalami 1973 and David Purley's attempts to rescue his dear friend and fellow driver Roger Williamson at Zandvoort 1973. All these events have some common ground: poorly trained, poorly equipped and in some instances inept (if not cowardly) course workers and a driver who would not leave another to die.

  • @manxcafe you have my point :)

  • @manxcafe the same thing happens to craig lowndes when he rolls his car at calder park raceway but everyone who got out of there cars to help him were fined apparently

  • @killthebeachwhale I saw that crash. Fined? that is so wrong, drivers are the first to respond to a dire situation. I was spared death thanks to another.

  • Wow, this happened under SC? And I don't hate the Japanese or anything, but in about every Japanese crash i conclude one thing: Japs can't marshall fo shit! It's like they don't even try.. I'm a marshall myself and the video is a great example how NOT to deal with an incident like that

  • this race was called off

  • RIP Tetsuya

  • @SuperA1973

He survived from the crash and he filed a lawsuit against the track and race organisers

  • fUJI speedway is really a dangerous track, always foggy when raining. Its good that Formula 1 race is back in suzuka.

  • After a crash like that, would the race be rescheduled immediately? Or would it go on?

  • Those Marshalls are complete idiots.

  • You're taught when you're a flaggie in Australia where I am: 1) Look after yourself, 2) Look after your team mates, 3) Look after the drivers and other people and 4) look after the cars last.

Even if you think Ota's a goner, you go there and get that fire out . You try and assist the Porsche driver too. What the first to the Porsche didn't do was find the external kill switch and pull it, or flick the internal one in the car. Otherwise you could have raw fuel still pumping onto the fire.

  • yearsdont forget marshals around the world have lost there lives also in the persute of driver safety and drivers also without the marshals no race would be able 2 happen, we learn by mistakes

  • "learning by mistakes" only applies if the guy lives. If Ota had died, then saying "Oh well, we'll try better next time" is sort of hollow when there IS no next time for the driver. This is one of those occupations where you don't really have much room for a "next time". Ota was arguably horribly maimed because of the slow and poor actions of the track officials, and as it is there's no "next time" in racing for him.

  • but after reviewing i do think the marshal got him out, with the help of the rx 7 driver but i dont understand why he then left for a moment and left Ota on his own on the floor, the driver from the rx 7 had already put the fire out, i hope, and expect marshaling has got better and better organised in the last 11

  • admittedly a bit late

  • also,as i am a marshal, in respsect to the porsche driver and the marshals on that side of the track, you do not cross a live track, you cannot help some one if you get hit by another race car, it is up to the marshals on the opposite side to do that till safe to do so, as you say, drivers couldn't see so how could the marsals see another car comin, and when it was safe to do so they did!

  • my question is why was there no communication to the drivers that they where not doing the start that lap, as they where fully expecting, the spray was not too bad till mid pack when the thought the race start, even the pole sitters where about to overtake the pace car, total lake of communication between teams, offials and lack of get up and go when they needed the marshals to help, sort, and stop this from happening!

  • Unfortunetly im forced to agree this was a major choke

Theyre first priority should of been put the fire out then get the driver out of there the one in the porsche was climbing out albeit slowly so their priority should of been putting out that Ferrari and getting Ota out of there, not leaving him to burn.

Im not going to call them idiots they just did not receive the proper training for whatever reason and can only hope in the future itll be rectified and this prevented from happening agan

  • Comment removed

  • except thats their job man... in that moment of chaos they are the ones who should be able to get you out of shit, even though it rarely ever happens and is not expected. the fact is that they were grossly underprepared and did not perform the way they were meant to. the accident was caused by the safety car in the first place (almost 3X the speed it shouldve been over the line.. and then braked RIGHT in front of the porsche) and then they sucked at getting to the accident in time... just wow

  • I agree with you, peterjussi; It was another racer the one who saved his life when he stopped to extinguish the fire and not a professional fire and medical team as it is supposed to. The idiots here were the race organizators for having poor safety conditions and unprepared people to respond in case of an accident like this. Qualifyed crews don't panic or choke, they're trained to respond fast and eficiently even in the worst case scenario. obviously, these people were FAR away from that

  • Emergency personnel crews are trained to not panic. Otherwise how will they ever get their jobs done? These people were just moronic

  • That's your interpretation. I agree with the first part. However, I don't live to call people idiots. -.-

  • Yes well, that's easy to say when you didn't jump out of a flaming car and suffer from burns to the majority of your body, while the emergency personnel leaves you there

  • Comment removed

  • First, maybe some or most emergency personnel are trained not to panic, but not all. Second, they are human. Humans make mistakes, fear, panic, etc.

Third, you're trying to argue with me because you're dissatisfied that I hold an ethical standard of not calling people stupid. You obviously don't, as shown by calling them moronic and implying that I'm a stupid fuck with your second reply.

I am not going to go around calling people idiots all my life. You go ahead. I won't.

  • It's great that you're self righteous, except you also said: "I don't think they meant to be idiots". In other words, you called them idiots but you didn't think they meant to be. Great job.

  • Comment removed

  • Actually- I said "moronic", not "idiot".

As far as I can tell you were the first one to use "idiot". I don't know how you can accuse me of twisting your words when it's written right there under your name.

If by saying "I don't think they meant to be idiots" you actually meant "I don't think they're idiots", then you need to work on your English (especially while you're throwing fancy phrases out there). Either way.

I did not accuse you, so you're attempt to accuse me of accusing you is denied. I said "people like you did," meaning people who spend their entire lives on Youtube labeling people they see on videos as idiots/morons to praise themselves. How cowardly that is, to shoot words at persons in videos that cannot respond to you.

  • Calling people "moronic" is a logical fallacy of Ad Hominem.

Attempting, and failing miserably, to insult me by claiming I need to work on my English is also Ad Hominem.

    Nice try by being fallacious.

  • Comment removed

  • Well I don't know how you can lump me with "you people", especially since you were the one with the original comment and mine was a reply. Unless I'm blind, "Moronic" is not "idiotic", and making a mistake like "I don't think they mean to be idiots" actually meaning "I don't think they're idiots" is why those Bushism posters exist (search google if you don't know what I'm talking about).

  • I take it that the fact that you replied 6 times to my one comment means you're bothered by what I said (and trying hard to prove yourself right even though it's not working).

My tip for you in life is to not lose any sleep over what you read on the internet. Relax. Because the people you meet in the "real" world will be far less kind. I'm done here.

    Btw, you're wrong.

  • You can train all you want, but when the real thing happens, training can only bring you so far. Seeing something happen for real is much different than training. Good for the RX-7 driver who stopped and tried to help at least.

  • Yeah, I'm sure this is the first time a car crashed on a racetrack.

  • what is ota's number

  • it's 27.

  • i've seen a lot of videos concerning japanese motorsport and cant help but to say that the supposed 'safety crew' or marshall or whatever fuck they call them acts so dumb like they're were robots.. fuck it.. i hate to see them in this video

  • i completely agree it is like they dont care about tetsuya

  • The marshalling really was a disgrace here. No wonder Ota sued the organisers because of this.

  • agreed

  • yap.

  • he sued tham because of the safety car going to fast

  • this crash was weird cause both the porsch and the ferrari are rear engined cars but the hit head on and blew up?????????//

  • stupid question.... F355 is mid engine not rear. 911 has the gas tank in the front

  • why is there fire on the right hand side of the circuit? the crash happened on the left

  • what happened to ota was that the pace car was going 150kmp in the rain and all of a sudden it stoped and caused the porsche to spin out and then the ferrari lost control of the car and smashed into the porsche. surprisingly ota still lives.

  • thats japanese for yes....dumbass

  • i still cant believe in japanese racing there are no safety regulations or safety or salvatage crews. it basically depends on luck, or on your team. in moto gp, drivers are picked up like trash with no care or neck protecting techniques.

  • You can read all about this on wikipedia. Sad, but should serve as a reminder to any safety crews out there.

  • my goodness the officals were mad, not to stop the event before the crash. Also those marshalls were completly useless they didn't even bother that a driver was lying on the ground wriggling himself in pain!!!!!

  • i can't read japanese or speak it but i just watch but which GT500 car is #777 in 30th

  • Is there a 2nd camera angle, maybe a reverse angle, showing how the F355 crashed into the Porsche?

  • i'm afraid not, i posted another video with the crash, but still...

You can see it hits the porsche right on the fuel tank (at the front on a porsche)

  • what happend to the guy with the flags?

  • good question.. it seems the blow did happened just below the flag marshall

  • @2005pierric there is another angle... but you dont want to see this... one of the ugliest crashes if ever seen... the rescue units were shit.... if you like to see: watch?v=wS2k0JbOpDQ&feature=related

  • @bavarianbass

thanks but I actually uploaded both videos already ;)

  • @bavarianbass a friend of mine almost had same thing. she banged into traffic jam in front of her in weather like this and then 2nd car crashed on her front while she was on side of road.

  • @2005pierric Who is Number 18

  • Have you watched the video that this is a response to? You can't see what causes Tetsuya to go off (although I believe he braked and aquaplaned off), but you can see just how much of a wallop the F355 gives the Porsche.

  • @arxcns

    yes there is:

    /watch?v=1qmeV0WtYfk&feature=related

  • @pilipukas123 Oh my... that's really nasty.... O.O I'm guessing he lost control under braking. neways thanks for the link~

  • @arxcns The Porsche rear-ended another car and spun off to the side of the track with its right front end destroyed. Something caused Ota's F355 to spin to the left (can't see what through all the spray) and it slid into the destroyed right front of the #910 Porsche and ruptured the fuel tank. Ota's car slid down on fire and backed across the track to the other side. I don't know whether all the fuel was splashed from the Porsche or if the F355's fuel tank ruptured as well.

  • Even Fuji make a lot of safety improvements in order to meet the regulations to host a F1 race, but some part of the track still remain dangerous...

  • wow he is 1 lucky guy

  • when the camera is focused on the bmw u can see some orange light coming from the top of the screen

  • there was a lawsuit after this crash. and i think you're all forgetting that all racing drivers no it is dangerous to get in a race cae. and it is admirable what the re amieya rx-7 driver did. the main culprit for this crash is the skyline pace car driver. it was way way to wet to go at that speed.

  • Man how can that kinda fireball come out of a car i mean i know that there is gas and all but that is like somekinda WTF crash almost...Thank God he is alive and that was a graceful move by the RX7 driver to go and help

  • I am glad to see that driver of the RX-7 stop and help put out the fire, and pull Ota out of the car.

  • and the first one to help is another driver

  • True, the yellow RX7 i think ? Can't remember wut car it is

  • it's the ameimiya rx-7. sponsored by a drink company I think :D .

  • @2005pierric Re-amemiya RX7

  • it sucks to drive in the rain...

  • The RE amemiya's FD driver saving Ota's life looks like Keisuke Takahashi saving any drifter's life

  • That guy in the Rx-7 is a hero-he saved Tetsuya's life. He didn't need to do that.

The marshalls took ages to get there if the other guy hadn't got there i don't think he would have lived.

  • They did everything fundamentally wrong, what they did wrong! But they have good anti fire equipment, but it's still too little!

  • Whats even worse is that the ambulance was going the WRONG WAY down the straight when trying to reach the crash scene. I would hope the Japs learnt lessons from this incident.

  • There was a lawsuit related to this I believe.

  • Perhaps they grew some brains and decided to be more careful about starting races at Fuji in atrocious conditions like that. It seems to me the incident was caused by some drivers back in the field anticipating a start. The pace car stayed out on the track and inevitably the cars up the back hit those towards the front VERY hard, thus the huge initial impacts.

  • i cant understand the gravity and worste intervent of first aid teamm... the driver should had to stay immobilized and not free to move ouside cars. where are the litters? ok estinguishing fires.. but where are the litters? worste organisation i ve ever seen before....

    dont you think???

  • It was said that the explosion was because of the porsche's fuel tank (at the front , since it's a porsche)

  • That Ferrari was a new prototype fueled by a LH2/Methane mixture, with large tanks store in the front of the car 0-o

I dont know WHAT made that thing go up like that, they make them fuel lines out of some weak crap in Italy I guess.

  • Welcome from the Insane Insane 500, we are racing in a monsoon. We race in ANY rain, we have no concern for driver saftey (sorry, I dont know Japeenese, but I thinks that was they says)

What is the point of racing in SUCH bad weather, just ensures a massive wreck.

  • well the porsche hit a car and spun out

then the ferrari hit it and exploded and caused another two cars to crash

    everyone survived that crash

  • It's hard to tell what happened and how many cars were involved.

Why was there another fire on the other side of the road? LOL! I wish i understood Jap!!!

  • Mate, i posted a video response on this vid (just clik under the video window to see another angle, you'll understand what happened ^^)

  • It's hard to say what happened..

Maybe no visibility, but the ferrari had an aquaplanning problem :D
