I love The Band very much . . . ESPECIALLY the way Levon played the Southern Rhythms on the drums . . . sometimes with that timing almost going into Reggae without even trying to go into Reggae at all . . . just fits.
Does anybody recognize a similarity with Bob Marley's "Want More"?? That sound!!! So good!! I think "The Band" is great!! (and very inspirational for someone else!!)
@love4blk Dude you are so right. I believe that is why I love The Band so much! I am a huge fan of Bob Marley and when I heard the band the first time is it was so familiar to me!
You know, back then some of those "folk-rockers" couldn't actually reproduce their music live very well. Whereas for years The Band delivered all the goods, note by note, night after night whether as The Hawks, as Dylan's band, or as The Band, for many years at a high level of vocal and instrumental accomplishment, and it must have taken a toll on them. So I refuse to pass judgement on their personal troubles.
THE BAND!! What an outstanding group of musicians. Perfect example of a group that was true and faithful to the integrity of Rock n Roll. I truly regret that I was not hep to them when they came to perform in my town. I doubt anyone will ever make music such as they did ever again. Pity that most of todays music fans have never even heard of them let alone enjoy the beauty of their talent. I guess I was lucky to have been young back then.
If Robbie and Levon could ever find away to reconcile and go on tour together, they'd be pure magic..don't know if it'll happen, but it's never too late to dream.
I love this documentary, and the way they deconstruct my favorite song is fantastic. It really feels like "Up On Cripple Creek" is one of those tunes where everything came together in just the right way.
Hey Robbie - since you've pretty much admitted here that Garth came up with the lead instrumental part of this song, why not share some of your royalties with him?
Many of The Band's greatest songs - rock classics of the first order - were written collectively, even though Robbie took sole credit for them. He must have made millions over the years, money that should have been shared with the rest of The Band.
@searcherboy He should have for sure, BUT all the members of the Band except for Levon signed away their royalty rights to Robbie many years ago. One of the reasons Richard killed himself was because he was broke and playing dive clubs with the Band (minus Robbie) in the early 1980's. Very sad.
I had no idea this DVD ever/even existed - (heading off to Amazon to add to the collection) Thank YOU . . . very much for this. ps - Isn't Garth the epitome of MUSIC ???? We just LOVE him - and hell ya Robbie it is AMAZING how Levon can do what he does!
@ttraynor1 fantastic post man. Couldnt agree more. Once upon a time back eons ago in the 60's and 70's, there were mythological creatures called musicians who could play instruments, harmonize, write actual music themselves, and didn't rely on image and studios to create cookie cutter music for them for the glowing adoration of 10-15 year old tone deaf slow mutant children that know literally nothing about music.
@ttraynor1 We don't get musicianship anymore, because music is now based on pretty faces, and how they look in jeans. In the 60s an 70s, you had some mud fence-ugly people making fantastic music, they wouldn't get a second look today. I know a few of the bands Im thinking of, and Im not gonna mention any, of course, because their looks is not what comes out of their instruments. The music business has fucked itself every bit as much as napster & other peer sharing did.
@painxtreme I greatly apologize for my grammar on the previous post. Another knife in the back of musicianship are the bands that go into it purely for commercial success and fame. The best bands are always the ones that write songs purely for their own enjoyment, and if the public gets it, bonus. I'll break my name dropping for just one person, because many of us are trying to draw him out of seclusion. That would be Robbie Steinhardt of Kansas, what a talent and kind soul he is,
Amazing! When was this done? Levon and Robbie did not do anything together much after Waltz' but this is definitely post Waltz. Can that really be Levon? This whole clip sort of blows my mind. Totally make me smile (although it really is unbelievable)...Thanks so much for the post!
You are correct--post Waltz, 1997. This was all shot and produced in 1996 as far as I can tell.
If you get the full DVD, you'll note that Robbie never appears with anyone else. According to Levon's book, everyone, even John Simon, got fed up with Robbie over the handling of payments with The Last Waltz and abuse of royalty payments from some of their albums.
Basically, despite being one of the best concert films of all time, none of the band members made a dime over the Last Waltz.
Robbie Robertson! Swoon....

It's from the 'Classic Albums: The Band", published by Eagle Rock Entertainmment.
It's like 12 dollars on Amazon (I'd link but Youtube doesn't allow comments to have them now).
The whole thing has a lot more songs than just the brown album and has a lot more of this kinda stuff. It rocks.
