While I will always love Steve's version the best this version is actually quite good and I enjoy listening to this version too. Quite different but still good. I think it's the music in this one that appeals so much to me.
Thanks for posting. I too grew up loving the Steve version. But Barry does it well too.All 50's....cant go wrong. He could leave out that daft part about come back to Daddy and Big Daddy... too weird. ha ha
He did a complete different take on his song. I like the Steve Lawrence version better but that is because I grew up that versions. I would buy this version on a .45 if it was available. I guess I will search for it and see it's around. Thanks for the post.
I agree... Great tune Great melody... Answer.... Probably the same person who put ! "The Ram" in the "Ram-A-Lang -A-Ding-Dong" !!!! but I might be wrong.
I think Barry Mann is a great songwriter and this is a great song done by Steve Lawrence and many other artists. Oddly, I don't care for his own version of HIS song.
Yep - Another song that was a hit in Australia but no where else! It's incredible how many there are! Mann's version of this was released as a single in Oz on the W&G label and peaked at #20 on the Sydney 2SM Top 40, and reached the prediction lists on the 2UE Top 40.. it also charted in Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Hobart. I suppose after Steve's version flew it's way to the Top 10 in Oz, we still hadn't enough a year later!
As a 11 year old in '61, this was a friggen good song!
A great songwriter for sure but the songs he wrote and chose to sing himself as originals, can not be surpassed. Try 'Sweet Little You' by Barry and compare with Neil Sedaka's version - one rests ones case.
available on a 45?

This Barry's version has much more soul than Steve's one.

Wow. Steve Lawrence's is so much better! Just my opinion. I didn't know anyone else did this.
rosekraut 8 months ago
@rosekraut Mr Mann wrote it, of course. There's also a version by Ronnie Carrol, in the Steve Lawrence mould.

@rosekraut stevs lawernce did it better but this is a refreshing twist a good exercise in artistic concept very good

I was born in 1993, so this is the first time I heard this song; I listened to both, and I like this version.
All to his own though.

Yep, I prefer Mann's version of 'Sweet Little You' to Sedaka's, especially at the fade out when everything's going full pelt.
SirBasildeBrush 2 years ago
Yea he know how to sing songs like this. Always good to hear how others like Sedaka (who I like) portray his songs.

Steve's version is perfect.
That said, Barry makes this song his own and does equally well- a hard thing to compete with Steve!
owenatkins 3 years ago
Very true. Footsteps by Steve was always one of those perfect songs, so suprised to find something as good as this.
SirBasildeBrush 3 years ago
It's easy to see why Barry Mann spent more time with a pen in his hand instead of a microphone.

Hi Tuggle. Your 'Calendar Girl' still has to be my favourite YT video!
