I remember my biology teacher telling this anecdote in 1991. It's still funny, so I see no harm in repeating it. I can imagine that the Qi elves change between seasons, so they may have missed this one. embarrassing, but no real harm done. Loosen up ppl.
I'm not offended on Alan's behalf or anything, I was just really confused. It seemed awkward how they cut back to Alan after Stephen told the joke. In any case, it's a fairly funny gag.
Here's my opinion on it, since everyone seems to want to weigh in. 1) It is not an original joke from Alan, so he can't be too offended. 2) Alan told it much better than Stephen. 3) If all of us remember that the joke had already been used, the the good people of QI should have remembered (not least Stephen himself, who is brilliant in such memory) and not used it again. That's just my opinion.
I can't believe people are making such a big deal out of this. It was obviously a mistake that the joke was repeated. It's not the end of the world. I mean, if it was an original joke by Alan, then I could maybe understand, but he clearly says that it's a joke that made the rounds online.
Fact of the matter is that this is a joke all over the internet, in fact it's a very common chain-mail joke. Fry could've heard it recently and just thought to have used it and have forgotten Alan had told it before. There're years between these two episodes, anyway.
erm......

Lord Fry? is that a nickname? XD
I knew they had said it before, and yes, it was funnier when Alan said it!

Fry recycled this joke, I like Alan's telling better.

Good! I was worried Stephen was telling a joke he had told before, but as it turns out they had stolen Alan's.

Priceless Alan-ending. I can't really spell it out phonetically but ~"ss-uh, thank you." Replay-repeat.

I don't believe Fry stole the joke as of course it's one Alan heard from the 'net. But why tell a joke already said by a contestant previously?
However, they must have been in on it as in the episode it cuts to Alan Davies looking a bit miffed

From Alan's twitter:
Ha! Yeah,a big ol rumble. It's a story I picked up somewhere.Lord Fry doesn't write the script or do the research, not his fault

Yet I agree, Alan told it better.

Poor Alan. Having that joke ripped out from right under his nose by Fry. I never imagined Fry would do something like that.
