I find the commercials very clever, and some of the are actually rather critical--they point out parts of Japanese society that Japanese take for granted... things that aren't always the best parts, but (usually) end w/ a silver lining. They're subtle calls to change some things, really.
(Some of the radio CMs Boss has on their website are pretty biting)

It´s like this: Tommy hates living in Japan (=earth) as an alien and feels threatened by the Japanese (=earthlings) sounds (Karaoke) and law&order regulations (meaning you are not supposed to walk when you are working for anything that implies home deliveries, but to run, and be sure to not get a parking ticket). So Tommy listens to Aki Yoshiro and feels much better, get it?

You guys bought the freaking coffee so Tommy has obviously done his job, right?

Maybe that's the face of a man who realizes his mug is going to be used to sell coffee from vending-machines in Japan.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one left dumbfounded by that ad campaign. Usually spokespeople are happy about their product..
I think I came to the conclusion that the sad-Tommy photo is pre-Boss-Coffee. I mean, that HAS to be the implication. Doesn't it...?
