Nothing else matters. This is a lovely tune, played beautifully buy a master. That's it---get over it . It's as good as it gets. If you want to trounce it, go elsewhere, and do better.
I had the extreme pleasure of attending a performance by Ed in Pensacola 2/4 but he did'nt play this or "Duet" (my personal favs - I love the "Live" CD). Ah but he did play was wonderful, his soul is deep within his playing. Love the acoustic lap guitar as well. He seems to always favor the slow songs, but we all need to slow down and enjoy peaceful pleasures, you can hear the voice of God in there.
I live within a half hour of Ed and I had the honer of seeing him a number of times. He always greets with a hearty handshake and a warm demeanor. When he starts a show with Duet it is anything but boring shit. A good and talented man.
What compells you to make such a hateful comment? If this is all you can say, then just keep it to yourself. You wish you could play guitar like this guy.
@vinnothelizard God's a joker for sure-some deaf person with a sense of beauty should have gotten what has plainly been wasted on you-but you are obviously dumb -just not in the sense you should be-A-Hole.
I live in NH (Ed's home state) and have had the opportunity to see Ed play live quite a few times over the years. I still find it breathtaking how much emotion he can put into a song. What feeling!
I was fortunate to see Ed in concert a few years ago in Springfield Illinois. It was a quaint setting with maybe just 50 or so people. It was fabulous. It was something I won't forget.
@markg5977 That's the way Ed usually plays. Thank goodness you can hear a great player in such an intimate setting. He hangs out during intermission and at the end of his shows as well. Really great guy to chat up...
Damn i love this guy. I first heard "The Handing Down" when i was an early teenager - it made me want learn the guitar and i did - but Ed is something else. I often wonder what it would be like to be able to write and play like him.
Yeah that was my first Gerhard song as well. But at that early age, I didn't think enough to learn his name or the name of the song. All I had was a somewhat tune in my head, and I spent years looking for the song and i just recently found it. I love his playing.
Haha me too. Windham Hill has some sheet music out. Too bad it took me 13 yrs to get it. I actually played The Handing Down at a wedding and it was very nice. I really do love this player.
I've been listening to ed for about 10+ years and remains my favorite. I know he's not techcically considered "classical" - but his songs really have something even the "great" composers would be jealous of.
The guitar how I love to play it!!!!! So wonderful, it just stirs you up!!!!! It jsut bring you to tears, wow such an energy! There's something strong here happening, I call that the magy of picking
The tab makes this very playable but it is different than what you see on this video and of course Ed's version is much prettier but the tab is close.
In case you still haven't located the tab for this, it's in a collection that has both tab and manuscript notation. It's called "Ed Gerhard: The Guitar Songbook (Book & CD) (Acoustic Masterclass)."
You're welcome. And BTW, no, this song doesn't have "funky tuning," although many of the others in the book do. If you get the book be prepared to tune your guitar a lot, and use a slide.
Thank you.

what kind of guitar is that? it looks like a Breedlove to me

Breedlove jumbo body
Marc61111 4 years ago
It's the Breedlove Ed Gerhard model. I have # 52 of these models. Purchased in 1998, but no one plays them quite like Ed himself.
