anyone interested im selling off my cassette tapes and ive got a LIVE yes live its immaterial cassette bought from camden town back in the day guvnor! let me know if interested.. this song is done live by them on the gig though you can hear how over produced or how hard it was to pull off live.
Thanks for uploading this! I recorded this from the radio onto tape sometime in 1986 but at the time I didn't catch the band or song title. For the last ~25 years I've been looking on and off for the title of the song and name of the band. Thanks to everyone who included lyric extracts in their comments - Google picked them up! I'm now off to buy this song (the tape is wearing a bit thin).
@brunoresende29 (I'm telling you son, you shouldn't come round here late at night).
Crazy when the gang's all here, spend spend spend Viv money's not so dear (for the love of your life), Jack pull up a high stool and bend my ear, we'll shun the mealy-mouthed until they disappear.
Serve it up, this food for thought, serve it up (chalk it up) in Ed's place, where dreams are bought.
Tell me who's that cat by the swinging door? Well hey Tex, Sylvester, an animation of yours, switch on like a neon light every time you talk, and yes Malcolm I hear you, and I believe in your cause.
Hey it's good to see your face. Now Ed, well it's surprising who you meet. You said each one's a jewel you've dragged in off the street.
And there's Jack & Malcolm & Vivienne too, all swapping stories for you. Hey it's good to see your face, what are you doing in this place?
@brunoresende29 Hi, did you manage to pick up the lyrics? I've just bought the CD off Amazon for about £5-6, the quality aint that good tbh, I've had to put it on really high to hear it - if u still need all the lyrics I'll type them out for you - cheers
This is the definitive & unique 1980's 'Sound'. I wonder whether the musicians / artists had any idea at that time (apx. 1984) that amongst all the many wonderful peripheral sounds, theirs would be the definitive 1980's Product ?
A great track that is even more remarkable for its high level of musical complexity. I still have the 7" stashed away.
Many years ago, when this was played by John Peel on Radio One, he responded to the final lyrics 'What are you doing in this place? / Answer me that' in his own uniquely self- effacing way by answering, 'To be really honest, I don't know.'
thanks a million for posting this great video . I think this originally came out in 1986 or thereabouts . I had this song on a compilation video I made up with loads of other stuff from The Tube ( what a great show that was ! ) but has since long gone . So to see it again after all these years has been very nostalgic . Have the actual song on my ipod though

Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this class track. Searched high and low for the single back in the 80's but dropped out of the charts and never got it. What a treat to hear it again. Top stuff.
LIFE'S HARD... was the first album i ever took a risk on as a kid (having read the review in SMASH HITS). so thank god it was good. still one of my fave albums ever. mental though! makes about as much sense now as it did then.
A great evocative song from the '80s era.

Aesthetically, this is something very special.
Nothing ever sounded like this before, nor since.

I'm still looking for a IM compilation I saw in HMV. Never seen since. Must have fallen into another universe.
Great songwriters who deserved a lot more of everything they wanted.

I love this song and have still got the original 7". Proper songwriting with an intelligence that was missing from the mid-80's. Spot on.

I still remember the lyrics after all these years. And I still remember playing the record and sticking it on a tape for my walkman. Brilliant!

When struggling to find my identity as a teenager, this track helped in prolonging the agony!!
From the tracks they wrote, to the videos they made, the artwork & the lyrics - Genius!!
