  • Seen that happen, except he fell 20 meters. Was very lucky to just break two legs and an arm. Oh, and he had a few leaks too, but he was up and flying again the next spring.

  • Some pilots use a cocoon harness or non front entry pods such as the older CG 1000's. So the main thing here is to hook in & do a hang check. A hang check

will prevent all not hooked in accidents! Hang Check. Hang Check. Hang Check.

  • Pilot broke the #1 rule: HOOK IN & DO A HANG CHECK.

Needs a checklist: If this had been a shear cliff, he'd died.

Lucky dog award to him for sure :)

  • Pre-flight checklist!.... Situational awareness

  • almost got to be a candidate for a darwin-award

  • He even tried jumping back in!!

  • @leklek69 WTF? Did you just watch the same video as everyone else?

  • @leklek69 Anger management classes recommended.

  • like jumping into a pool and forgetting to swim

  • @CraigRidley1 More like forgetting to put the water in first....

  • Truth never gets old: use a front-entry harness and NEVER get into harness unless harness is already hooked-in to the glider. If you must get out of the harness, undo the buckles and zippers and climb out. Don't unhook! Lastly, always do a lay-down hang check just before launch. Combined, these techniques reduce risk of accident by an order of magnitude.

  • @thermalf Agreed !! Indeed, I've yet to understand any argument to the contrary of this simple and effective precaution to launching unhooked.

  • one word .....LOL.....

  • This happened to a guy I knew, he got about 70 ft. above the ground and finally let go. Leg had to be amputated.

  • Hang check would help

  • this is fake

  • im sure he was saying shit also. Maybe even soiled himself?

  • i unhooked to help a tamdum pilot in trouble, after he launched i returned to my wing wacth him fly away and next cycle i threw my glider off the mtn.

if youre rutine is interupded start over from the begining.

ps the only guy that laughed lounched unhooked 1 week later, hung on and got hurt...so dont laugh it can happen to you.

  • muy bonito.... no te enganchaste al Ala delta, la sacaste barata my friend en una rampa mas agreste te matas

  • dude...hook your harness into the loops Before you put on the harness.

  • Dudes...... Do your hang check 3 time before da launch, and Triple Check, make sure you are locked in that bad bird

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • Agreed - but problem in strong winds is turning the glider around - hence all the Brits rig flat and clip in after - I Fly in Spain and really like examining everything as I am going to fly it (I.E GLIDER CLIPPED TO HARNESS)

  • Whosch.... Come on, always check, double check, fuck, even quadruble check.

  • All this talk about commercial aviation compared to hang gliding is interesting. I believe the main difference is if you overlook one of the checks in a commercial aircraft, 1 in 1000 pre flights, there is so many back up systems and safe guards that it won't matter. Just one mistake in a pre flight before hang gliding and your probably gonna be in deep crap.

  • Sempre dê uma capotada na rampa antes de decolar, não custa nada..

No voo livre cuidado nunca é demais!!

    Hang Check!!

  • GD! I know just how that feels!! Hang Check!

  • Hang check, hang check, hang check, why would you ever launch without doing a hang check? Lesson learned.

  • All comments about hang checks totally agreed with - also, never let the same cunt that helped him take off launch you - he must have seen that they guy was not clipped in!!

  • WHO`S THE PILOT

  • There isnt one. not a real one anyway

  • leading cause of death in hang gliding. Do your hang checks!!!

  • Can't you just let go of the A-frame as soon as you realise you are not strapped in. Assuming you have not launched off a cliff then you would only fall 10-12 feet if you were prompt at letting go, and that would not kill you?

  • I'm sure he didn't want to chuck his expensive glider off the mountain. He nosed it in and no harm no foul.

  • I get one before I move the glider, and another at launch...glad this story ended well.

  • as a commercial pilot I do;

    before start checks

    after start checks

    taxi checks

    power checks

    before take off checks

    rolling checks

    after take off checks

FREDAAS,HASELL, before landing and shutdown checks.

forgetting one could mean serious trouble, so of the two or three hangglider checks which one is difficult to remember? hook in check? LOL!

  • But if you forget to check one time only one of these many elements, the probabaility for it is failing at that moment is weak. Commercial or non-commercial pilots do the same checklist. With hagglider it is not so easy despite what you may think.

It ever happened to very experimented pilots, long experienced. There is maybe a subconcious part in that process. The fewer element, the most important... And there is no electronic system to warn you... You would be grounded by your computer.

  • If there was no electronic system I am certain that many commercial planes would land on their belly. And it happens though. Dont tell me you never make mistake, it just does not kill you.

Beside, experimented hanglider pilots sometimes feel like fish in water, Just two steps and you're flying, it is very different from sitting in a cockpit on a clean airport. Also not hooking yourself is not fearing on a hill (despite it kills). But I agree, hook in check ! I strongly disagree with "LOL"

  • A good hangg pilot should feel like a fish out of water, when getting ready to take off i always have. After 2,500+ take offs, i did the unthinkable and found myself hanging from the down tubes. Lucky i had the experience and avid rock climber. Have flown powered fixed, very different and MANY checks, because there is SO much that can be wrong. Being over confident can cause troubles, sooner or later. There is more big egos in hang gliding than any other "sport". An example is the decline of no.s

  • Dont make the mistake of thinking just cos you are a commercial pilot you are immune from stupid mistakes... There are plenty of crash reports out there that show commercial pilots who make such silly basic mistakes that you have to wonder...

  • I generally hook in upon arriving at launch

spot. If I wait too long for right

    conditions, e.g., 2+ minutes, I repeat

the hook-in check, leaning forward to

tug on hang straps. I may also say

    aloud, "Hooked In."

  • Its a mistake that should NEVER be made. A clip in check should ALWAYS be done. No excuses, this is a bad pilot. He will not make this mistake ever again i hope. Checklists!!

  • A simple CHECKLIST would have prevented this.

All pilots need to understand the importance of using checklists.

  • lyingbandit i agree whit you, it happen even the best ones, tension, lots a peoples around pilot you mention. This is not a excuse is reality. Ricardo B.

  • Somebody PLEASE check to make sure I'm Hooked in... Hang Check please....

  • Indeed. One lucky (and stupid) pilot.

  • He's not stupid at all he's a very intelligent guy. It goes to show even the best can have a lapse of concentration.

  • the 'best' should be experienced to check and double check that the strap holding them to their glider is secure. That's a pretty big lapse in concentration.

  • eight to go ??
