Actually I'm from Canada and, yes, our system is not perfect, but the fact is that EVERYONE in Canada is getting free health care! We don't have to worry about qualifying for insurance or insurance, period. In Canada, and like most of the civilized world, we think that the government should guarantee the health of every individual. Yes, some doctors leave to the U.S., but thats a small percentage. You still can't tell me why the richest country in the world can't do that for its citizens?

Al Franken is a graduate of the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard. He's also made his own way in the world of entertainment, winning accolades and acclaim (not to mention getting rich while he did it).

For many of us, her inability to handle simple questions, ranging from fundamentals about our government, to her choices in reading materials, made us believe she wasn't qualified. Also, though this doesn't affect her qualifications, her outlandish comments when dealing with a political rival made a mockery of what should have been a civil debate. McCain(who was a great candidate) was done a huge disservice.

I think writing jokes is a noble profession. He also wrote 3 or 4 books of political satire and hosted political radio shows.

stripping this country of all socialist influences would result in the corporations and businesses becoming just as authoritarian as any corrupt gov't. Gov't regulation is what prevents businesses from paying you 50cents an hour and requiring you work work 60 hrs a week or be fired. It is also what provides employee safety measures. Businesses wouldn't do these things unless the gov't made them.

Minimum wage, child labor laws, the 40 hour work week, overtime pay, among others are socialist ideals. The gov't stepping in and saying "hey corporations, you HAVE to do this so your employees are earning livable wages" is socialism. Drop the idea of philosophical purity.

i dont think there should be NO regulation. when the free market clashes with personal freedom and safety, i feel it should be shored up. the government should serve and protect us and that's about where i draw the line. i don't feel that qualifies me as philosophically pure, but rather rational and realistic.

There is nothing wrong with redistribution if it used efficiently, i.e., not to the extreme, like the U.S.S.R. I think the idea is to avoid pitfalls for what your talking about. Government = public service workers who dont have incentives to do a great job just like police they dont have incentives cause they just need to stay in office and work their own passion. Their incentives dont match their passion so you need natural competitive passion before enforcing anything that makes it undesirable.

Actually I'm from Canada and, yes, our system is not perfect, but the fact is that EVERYONE in Canada is getting free health care! We don't have to worry about qualifying for insurance or insurance, period. In Canada, and like most of the civilized world, we think that the government should guarantee the health of every individual. Yes, some doctors leave to the U.S., but thats a small percentage. You still can't tell me why the richest country in the world can't do that for its citizens?
