@MrSatanochio listen to his early works he's a shredder in his younger years, he evolve musically from shred to blues jazz fusion, check out electric joy and fever dream those 2 albums will blow you away and also his works with poison, greg howe, and mr. big
He likes to extend his arpeggios up to the ninth degree like a jazz player. I love extensions and alterations, but sometimes audiences aren't ready for that much musical intelligence.
Richie Kotzen's technique is limitless. If you watch his old 80s video, he's a total shred monster, like unbelievable stuff. And now he can use it to play all these other styles any way he wants.
I think it's a good practice for a video instructional not to show the tab, playing it slow, etc. This inspires you to copy it, but in your own style and technique. And so we could have more musicians that are unique and different, than a bunch of fast robots that play the same riff in the same way.
@tibyv8 I'm with you there. Not keen on using tabs, as I find myself feeling more comforatble playing things in different ways, and ultimately more satisfied with the sound. For example I'll just assume to play something in a certain position and learn much later on that it's supposed to be on a lower string, 5 frets higher on the neck. But fuck changing for a tab, unless it helps with the playing :P
tone is in the gear and in the fingers..because touch and pick attack have a hell of a lot to do with sound and tone, with that being said even some great players would have a hard time playing with my shitty line 6 30 watt(with a blown speaker) and my strat with super tight strings and worn down frets and high output pickups...smh..dang i need some new gear
Look at all the guitar players over the years.. EVH, John Sykes, Clapton... they change gear through the years, and they still sound like themselves...
Take Clapton:
In the '60's Les Paul and a Marshall Bluesbreaker
'80's Fender Strat (with active Lace pickups) and a Soldano SLO100
2000's Fender Strat (passive pickups) and Cornford amp
@visa so basically you're saying that the the Chopper pickup and the Telecaster and the strings he uses......none of that has nothing to do with what I'm hearing?
C'mon.... same old shit (the tone is in the fingers) everybody repeat over and over.... of course the way he plays is important.... but I'm talking about the specific sound and tone he uses...
Okay he has the same style as Hendrix, I'm now gunna say something that will piss a lot of people off, but he is a better guitarist than hendrix. Just because Hendrix was at a very revolutionary point in music and is now dead doesn't mean he was better than anyone that is around today. Hendrix is actually the reason I started playing guitar back in the day, but people have got better at guitar since then, if he was still alive I'm sure people would understand what I'm saying a lot easier.
I dig on Hendrix too... and I realize that his contribution to guitar and music in general was far greater than his abilities on the instrument. He's like Clapton in that his impact is better understood in terms of his impact on other musicians and how music has evolved over the years than on his skill.... Look at Gilmore.... amazing music, amazing riffs and melodies.... simple style. What works, works.
@oldskoolozzy Most people judge guitarist based on what they listen, because not everybody plays guitar, so he is on of the best cuz people like his music, not because what he plays is difficult. Not vereybody is consider a good player, just because they know alot, you need artistic imagination.
@oldskoolozzy If you study Kotzen, Satriani, Vai, etc, you could eventually be able to play like them, because their style is clean, note-by-note, based on hard practice of scales. Get a Kotzen Telecaster or a Ibanez JS or JEM and you even sound like them. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love all three of them, especially Richie, and it's not a bad thing what I just said. But listen to Hendrix, man, nobody can't ever play like him. Try play any of his live solos and you'll never sound like him.
@tibyv8 Allow me to disagree. Kotzen is a very different guitarist than Vai and Satriani. I just saw a gig few days ago - the guy is a genuine blues-rock player, used a stripped down Tele directly through a single channel Marshall - pure tone! He might play pretty fast but that does not make him a shredder! Too groovy to be one :)
Richie simply is a fantastic singer and songwriter who also happened to be a great guitarist!
@mrphyt0n I'm totally with you on this brother, and I totally agree. I just meant to say that Richie is an educated musician, although he has a lot of sick blues shit that would make Hendrix proud. And that's what I think too: I was and I am a big Satriani fan, but Richie's music has something else that no one has. But take it this way regarding my comment: Hendrix is a lot harder to reproduce than any other guitar player, because of his huge inspiring soulful playing. And that's why he's great!
@mrphyt0n have you seen the Richie Kotzen REH video? if you haven't seen that yet i suggest you do, that was way back before he change musical direction that video is "full shredding" if your looking for or wanting to see crazy arpeggios. also you might want to check out his project with Greg Howe. Guys like kotzen, govan, howe, lane and all other fusion guitar players are better than vai and satch. jazz fusion is a very complicated thing on the guitar because you play outside the circle
@dpsd Yeap, it's pretty harsh compared to rock...but these guitarists you named are jazz-rock, fusiona and rock-fusion guitarists...Pat Metheny is a Jazz Fusion player...I suggest you to learn a little bit more about genres. You could be misunderstood.
@RamiroFeichu Or he can just skip learning about stupid stuff like genres, genres are just tags to help us communicate.Get too explicit with them and you lose the point.
I'm not sure If I was right about the way I play Maybe you're Baby, the cool progression he puts together does sound like the Stevie Wonder song...but this guy is right about everything he plays. Dude plays great.
In the begining isn't that "Maybe Your Baby" by Stevie Wonder ala Derek Trucks? If not it sounds dead on...either way sounds sick. I play it with out the drop D and play a D minor using my pinky to hammer on the Low E on the 9th fret (B) and the play a A Major with taking my index finger on and off the second fret with the exact same rythme. It sounds like figured it out or maybe you just came up with it...but if you listen to that song, you'll no doubt here it. Thanks!
last time I saw him play he had a Fender Vibro-King of $5000, but what I can advise if you want to get this type of sounds is to change your line 6 and the guitar is also very important
he evolved, musically and technically at a certain point, so fender made him a guitar that he can play blues, as well as shred on. He's got a sig strat as well, but uses this sig tele most of the time because it sounds bigger and responds better to his playing.
I found that out eventually, lol. And what pickups, etc. I had just found out the Electric Joy model was a Starfield so all my hopes of getting the same guitar or anything close went down the drain. Must be Ibanez got sued because they don't sell it any more. At least you can get this, or get the pickups and put it in your existing Tele.
Actually Paul Gilbert wrote Colorado Bulldog and that intro lick is actually one of his own licks used in outro to "scit scat wah" as well. Paul Gilbert also wrote most of Mr. Big music ;) (first 4 cds).
i think that if you don't even know what kind of guitar fits your sound, you shouldn't even consider spending a considerable ammount of money on a Richie Kotzen signature Fender Telecaster...

His hands fingers may well be large I'm just looking at how much thumb hangs over and comparing his fingers against the neck.
some players have smaller fingers and make large stretches look easy they just have really good technique,Shawn Lane and Andy Timmons hav small hands and the make long stretches look easy esp Lane RIP.
No it is a thick neck. He just has large hands :) The TLR 145 RK only comes in one model and that is the one with the jumbo neck. I have one too and it is ok once u r used to it.
ya . im a big lad and i can play at a tidy pace. but damn richie has this ability to span large distances effortlessly . hand size might not come into it.his does mine dont.even though mine are probably bigger .

Well, some will say it's because Jimi was *sloppy*, and when mimic him - no-one wants to play sloppy on purpose. A sub conscious block...
Most will say that Hendrix was playing like that on purpose to be wild, and "out there". Maybe slight influences from the free Jazz of that time...
Either way I will agree his playing is distinct, and for whatever reason no-one else sounds like him, or any other legend from 60s to 70s.
Bring back LSD into pop culture, and something might happen.

His hands fingers may well be large I'm just looking at how much thumb hangs over and comparing his fingers against the neck.
some players have smaller fingers and make large stretches look easy they just have really good technique,Shawn Lane and Andy Timmons hav small hands and the make long stretches look easy esp Lane RIP.
livinastro 3 years ago
it's not as much about the length of tthe fingers but more the width of the base of your hand i.e. how far can you stretch your fingers apart..
tapilaha 3 years ago
Also, I'm pretty sure he's got a thin neck on that tele, which would probably make stretching a lot easier.
f0xo9 3 years ago
No it is a thick neck. He just has large hands :) The TLR 145 RK only comes in one model and that is the one with the jumbo neck. I have one too and it is ok once u r used to it.

Great rhythm and lead player.
IMO he doesn't look like he has big hands they look quite petite?
livinastro 3 years ago
ya . im a big lad and i can play at a tidy pace. but damn richie has this ability to span large distances effortlessly . hand size might not come into it.his does mine dont.even though mine are probably bigger .
