  • this guy is cool!

  • man this guy s totally dfrnt!!

  • Who the fuck is Richie Kotzen ?? This guy`s awesome !

  • @MrSatanochio listen to his early works he's a shredder in his younger years, he evolve musically from shred to blues jazz fusion, check out electric joy and fever dream those 2 albums will blow you away and also his works with poison, greg howe, and mr. big

  • @MrSatanochio a very talented american rock guitarist ( virtuoso) but has played with some big rock bands over the years too...

  • thanks richie u are amazing guitar player

    !

  • That riff at 2:00 is badass.

  • He likes to extend his arpeggios up to the ninth degree like a jazz player. I love extensions and alterations, but sometimes audiences aren't ready for that much musical intelligence.

  • this video was very helpful, i will apply some of this thanks richie!

btw i think you should go back in mr. big and make another album like actual size! no offense paul gilbert i just think your cooler in racer x.

    -Constance

  • great tone! now I want a tele!.. or maybe I want his hands!

  • I know that this question has been asked a bunch, but what is the second riff he plays? Do you know the name of the song?

  • @haggistheman1525 Good for me from the album Change

  • @tibyv8 Thank you!! That helps alot!

  • An Amazing Virtuoso (MASTER OF GUITAR)

  • DAMM YOU!!!!!!! I wanna play like this! :P hahahahaha

  • kotzen you sick bastard, you really rock! you`re awsome!

  • is this 2001?

  • it's useful so much . . . .

  • This is the Hendrix Techinique!

  • Brilliant guitar player...thank you for some great tips Richie!

  • Ex. 8 - What a riff.

  • Richie Kotzen's technique is limitless. If you watch his old 80s video, he's a total shred monster, like unbelievable stuff. And now he can use it to play all these other styles any way he wants.

    Monster of a player.

  • @bungholio80 Hit the nail on the head mate.

  • @bungholio80 i agree! kotzen, govan, howe, lane simply prodigy

  • I think it's a good practice for a video instructional not to show the tab, playing it slow, etc. This inspires you to copy it, but in your own style and technique. And so we could have more musicians that are unique and different, than a bunch of fast robots that play the same riff in the same way.

  • @tibyv8 I'm with you there. Not keen on using tabs, as I find myself feeling more comforatble playing things in different ways, and ultimately more satisfied with the sound. For example I'll just assume to play something in a certain position and learn much later on that it's supposed to be on a lower string, 5 frets higher on the neck. But fuck changing for a tab, unless it helps with the playing :P

  • @tibyv8 yes, using tabs is a crutch if you want to get good. One should play completely by ear if they want to be the best that they can.

  • Please someone send me the tabs, i tried to learn ex a b and c by ear (my teacher told me to) but i simply can't. PLEASE!!!!

  • pls can someone tell me name of that song 1:33

  • @zlonanetu Good For Me

  • right when you're about to say this guy is a good but average guitar player you get to minute 4:25 and get mind-blow

  • tone is in the gear and in the fingers..because touch and pick attack have a hell of a lot to do with sound and tone, with that being said even some great players would have a hard time playing with my shitty line 6 30 watt(with a blown speaker) and my strat with super tight strings and worn down frets and high output pickups...smh..dang i need some new gear

  • Comment removed

  • @MadSkidsBrah Its a Broad Statement... meaning the style you play is what your tone will be.

  • @MadSkidsBrah you probably are a bad guitar player.

  • @MadSkidsBrah

"TECHNIQUE is in the fingers, man. Tone is in the gear."

Then why is it that Most guitar players can pick up any guitaer, plug into any amp, play it, and they will still sounds like themselves?

Tone is in the player just as much as the gear

  • @ReverendBow tone is a part of your technique - but if you plug Eric Clapton into i dunno... Meshugga's rig, then it wouldn't sound as Eric Clapton

  • @n1ll3r

    You don't think so?

Look at all the guitar players over the years.. EVH, John Sykes, Clapton... they change gear through the years, and they still sound like themselves...

    Take Clapton:

In the '60's Les Paul and a Marshall Bluesbreaker

'80's Fender Strat (with active Lace pickups) and a Soldano SLO100

2000's Fender Strat (passive pickups) and Cornford amp

    yup, still sounds like Clapton...

  • @ReverendBow i think it was ted nugent who was gutted after playing Eddie van halens guitar and amp ,to find he still sounded like ted nugent .

  • @MUDSHARK111

    Exactly my point!

  • wow. you gotta love the kotzen.

  • I fucking love that tone.... it's the one I crave for my guitar....

  • I have one...I had to shield it because of bad ground noise and replace the crappy pickup switch...other than that, its a fantastic guitar!!!

Keep in mind, all screw holes are metric, so when you change the pickup switch, you need to bore out the metal cover a little.

  • @nate11star tone is in the fingers, man

  • @visa so basically you're saying that the the Chopper pickup and the Telecaster and the strings he uses......none of that has nothing to do with what I'm hearing?

C'mon.... same old shit (the tone is in the fingers) everybody repeat over and over.... of course the way he plays is important.... but I'm talking about the specific sound and tone he uses...

    :-)

  • capace ma artificiale, scolastico....mmm

  • whats the second jimi hendrix style song ???

  • the riff at the beginning is "good for me" from the album Change.

  • whats the song he plays?

  • such a complete guitar player

  • I can't get past how underrated he is. He's one of the best!

  • @BLaZe071775

    yeah.

although the ones that richie's playing are from fender custom shop.

  • yeah what i said

  • Okay he has the same style as Hendrix, I'm now gunna say something that will piss a lot of people off, but he is a better guitarist than hendrix. Just because Hendrix was at a very revolutionary point in music and is now dead doesn't mean he was better than anyone that is around today. Hendrix is actually the reason I started playing guitar back in the day, but people have got better at guitar since then, if he was still alive I'm sure people would understand what I'm saying a lot easier.

  • I dig on Hendrix too... and I realize that his contribution to guitar and music in general was far greater than his abilities on the instrument. He's like Clapton in that his impact is better understood in terms of his impact on other musicians and how music has evolved over the years than on his skill.... Look at Gilmore.... amazing music, amazing riffs and melodies.... simple style. What works, works.

  • I'm not pissed off, you're completely right man! :)

  • @oldskoolozzy Most people judge guitarist based on what they listen, because not everybody plays guitar, so he is on of the best cuz people like his music, not because what he plays is difficult. Not vereybody is consider a good player, just because they know alot, you need artistic imagination.

  • @oldskoolozzy If you study Kotzen, Satriani, Vai, etc, you could eventually be able to play like them, because their style is clean, note-by-note, based on hard practice of scales. Get a Kotzen Telecaster or a Ibanez JS or JEM and you even sound like them. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love all three of them, especially Richie, and it's not a bad thing what I just said. But listen to Hendrix, man, nobody can't ever play like him. Try play any of his live solos and you'll never sound like him.

  • @tibyv8 Allow me to disagree. Kotzen is a very different guitarist than Vai and Satriani. I just saw a gig few days ago - the guy is a genuine blues-rock player, used a stripped down Tele directly through a single channel Marshall - pure tone! He might play pretty fast but that does not make him a shredder! Too groovy to be one :)

Richie simply is a fantastic singer and songwriter who also happened to be a great guitarist!

  • @mrphyt0n I'm totally with you on this brother, and I totally agree. I just meant to say that Richie is an educated musician, although he has a lot of sick blues shit that would make Hendrix proud. And that's what I think too: I was and I am a big Satriani fan, but Richie's music has something else that no one has. But take it this way regarding my comment: Hendrix is a lot harder to reproduce than any other guitar player, because of his huge inspiring soulful playing. And that's why he's great!

  • @mrphyt0n have you seen the Richie Kotzen REH video? if you haven't seen that yet i suggest you do, that was way back before he change musical direction that video is "full shredding" if your looking for or wanting to see crazy arpeggios. also you might want to check out his project with Greg Howe. Guys like kotzen, govan, howe, lane and all other fusion guitar players are better than vai and satch. jazz fusion is a very complicated thing on the guitar because you play outside the circle

  • @dpsd Yeap, it's pretty harsh compared to rock...but these guitarists you named are jazz-rock, fusiona and rock-fusion guitarists...Pat Metheny is a Jazz Fusion player...I suggest you to learn a little bit more about genres. You could be misunderstood.

  • @RamiroFeichu Or he can just skip learning about stupid stuff like genres, genres are just tags to help us communicate.Get too explicit with them and you lose the point.

  • @tibyv8

Well, some will say it's because Jimi was *sloppy*, and when mimic him - no-one wants to play sloppy on purpose. A sub conscious block...

Most will say that Hendrix was playing like that on purpose to be wild, and "out there". Maybe slight influences from the free Jazz of that time...

Either way I will agree his playing is distinct, and for whatever reason no-one else sounds like him, or any other legend from 60s to 70s.

Bring back LSD into pop culture, and something might happen.

  • I'm not sure If I was right about the way I play Maybe you're Baby, the cool progression he puts together does sound like the Stevie Wonder song...but this guy is right about everything he plays. Dude plays great.

  • In the begining isn't that "Maybe Your Baby" by Stevie Wonder ala Derek Trucks? If not it sounds dead on...either way sounds sick. I play it with out the drop D and play a D minor using my pinky to hammer on the Low E on the 9th fret (B) and the play a A Major with taking my index finger on and off the second fret with the exact same rythme. It sounds like figured it out or maybe you just came up with it...but if you listen to that song, you'll no doubt here it. Thanks!

  • I have a line6 POD X3 live, and I really would like to get some kind of Richie's sound like the one in this video.

Does anybody can help me??? specially with the amp model...

  • last time I saw him play he had a Fender Vibro-King of $5000, but what I can advise if you want to get this type of sounds is to change your line 6 and the guitar is also very important

  • he evolved, musically and technically at a certain point, so fender made him a guitar that he can play blues, as well as shred on. He's got a sig strat as well, but uses this sig tele most of the time because it sounds bigger and responds better to his playing.

  • does anyone know why is he using telecaster.. What's the difference between telecaster and stratocaster that made him choose telecaster?

  • he didnt choose telecaster he uses both

  • gilbert and kotzen are so different its sometimes hard to believe kotzen was gilbert's replacement in the same band

  • I can't believe people hit the thumbs down on this comment. I agree, BTW.

  • That neck pickup sounds fab!

  • Hace 20 minutos estaba viendole en un concierto en telde, en la isla de gran canaria. Increible!

  • DIOS mio esres BRILLANTE...AMAZING

  • he has the most beautiful hands I have ever seen

  • He does have a "Relax, you're my friend" voice doesn't he?

  • He reminds of the guy who demonstrates the guitars at my local music store.

  • It took me a while to realize he sounds a lot like Tom Welling (Smallville) haha.

Anyone know if this is really a Fender or one of those Starfield guitars? The pickups look/sound like the Starfield variety.

  • @Whyrendog : it's a Fender for sure

  • I found that out eventually, lol. And what pickups, etc. I had just found out the Electric Joy model was a Starfield so all my hopes of getting the same guitar or anything close went down the drain. Must be Ibanez got sued because they don't sell it any more. At least you can get this, or get the pickups and put it in your existing Tele.

  • He uses Fenders. Starfield was a subsidiary of FMIC.

  • this is a fender with gold tuners and a dimarzio chopper on the neck and a twang king on the bridge

  • the quirky tune 'chype flux' is ritchie at his finest.

  • Richie KotzWIN

  • Many guitar players don´t know, but shred without heavy distortions and delays is much more difficult. Richie is amazing!

  • God it sounds good to hear fast playing that's not drowned in gain.

And that rhythm stuff is fucking beautiful, so getting stolen...

  • Ritchie got soul ... and technique without soul don't worth shit . not to mention his amazing voice.

  • kotzen wins

  • wins what?

  • flawless victory

  • beautiful tone, clean crisp sound!

  • His legato technique is awesome!!

  • yeah and then you sound like a million other players.

  • I hear the Hendrix legacy in some of his playing. That's not a dig, many a player has been incluenced by Jimi...this guy's phenomenal.

  • I remmember this dude on shrapnel records,

Steve smith, played drum's..He was young ,sounded like Steve Vai with silly slinky puddy..

  • any idea where I can find tabs for this? ...thanks!!!

  • Me 2!!I think i have a new guitar idol,Richie realy inspires me!He also wrote colorado bulldog for mr. big! It's one of the most difficult songs ever!

  • Actually Paul Gilbert wrote Colorado Bulldog and that intro lick is actually one of his own licks used in outro to "scit scat wah" as well. Paul Gilbert also wrote most of Mr. Big music ;) (first 4 cds).

  • Wish he'd talked about his mastery of sweeping!!!!! 4:27 is awesome fast sweeping!!! very jazzy

  • I'd like to see maraja21 while does these excercises like ritchie kotzen... But with the same groove and technique :)

  • Hey Maraja21!...You know who is he right?!...Just shut up

  • Richie is just awesome - I love how he plays

  • Kotzen shows his chop shop skill at 4:27 and on

  • you don't anything about tone, man...

  • u dont have fingers.. xD

  • you suck

  • you go ahead and play.

  • Try playing arpeggios by stacking fifths diatonically,

its a good way geting out of the pretty standard sounding thirds concept .

  • got the same guitar

  • this guy is great....great timing and phrasing

  • I love him but................Crack or Red Bull?

  • His tone is immense

  • i'm not a fan of telecasters, but I love the sound of that soapbar

  • He's my new fave guitarist! his rhythm playin is awesome

  • richie is one of my favorite guitarist...nice video

  • ok, aguante hendrix imitador jajajaja va con onda no se enojen

  • O timbre que ele tira é incrivel

  • haha bowling for soup....all you need is a shitty squire and crate....and a few 100 pounds of blubber. Then you'll be set

  • Does anyone here happens to know where was this video taken from? Was it taken form Young Guitar? His Hi-Tech Rock Guitar Dvvd maybe?

  • oh now i get it you go .d.d.d.d.d.dddd.ddd. Kotzen just teach Yngwie what to do...your great

  • yes...

  • i think that if you don't even know what kind of guitar fits your sound, you shouldn't even consider spending a considerable ammount of money on a Richie Kotzen signature Fender Telecaster...

    well... at least for me.

  • Sigh...my little deigo hands are too small for my thumb to effectively fret on the low e...

  • what a beautiful telecaster sound...and beautiful guitarist ;)

  • Is that some kind of jazz thing?

  • good video, but his tone sounds kinda sketchy to me.

  • is it a scallopped fret?

  • Sorry that's incorrect - that's Richie's Fender Japan Signature Telecaster - it's very popular the gtr. player for Roger Waters swears by his..

  • yer well personally i hate overdriven shredders. I dont no why my comment has two thumbed down, its funny how people get so sensetive when someone says something that they consider slightly down putting to there fav player

  • VERY VERY NICE LESSON AND FREAKING VERY NICE GUITAR!!!is this teledeluxe?

  • It's his signature model. You can only get it from Fender Japan.

    Google is your friend.

  • I have only just discovered Richie and Im blown away. Anyone reading this who hasnt heard of Guthrie Govan please please check him out he is a similar player and equally amazing!!.

  • the second riff sounds like a red hot chilli pepprs song

  • It's wierd. Those riffs and licks have been around for years, and it's funny to hear newer players say how great it is. Sometimes I wish they wouldn't discover it just to MAYBE discover something else. Like Miles.

  • Stop my slaver !!!!

  • that's a cool guitar!

    Is it tele 62?

  • I think it is his signature model.

  • a little hendrixy. beautiful playing

  • No he is from Philadelphia

  • i luv u boy...!!!!

    hahaha

    great guitarist

    funk,country,blues

  • que cancion es la de 1:45?? what is the song in 1:45??

  • creo q es "good for me" del album "change"... temazo como de costumbre si es de richie jeje

  • Hey does anyone know where is this Lesson From? I can't seem to find it on Young Guitar

  • It is from Young Guitar. Keep searching.

  • josi kotzen es mejorrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    aguante richie !

  • nice at 1.44

  • fantastic!! is he a country boy? you can hear it in his playin i thinK. i dunno, prove me wrong. its great playing any hows!

  • what's the name of this lesson vid?

  • gosh, this is the first video i've ever seen with him.

Does this guy makes intrumental music ?

  • he shows too fast..

  • He should do SINGING lessons!!

  • Sorry, did you ever hear one of his records or saw him live?

  • yes I did!

  • His hands fingers may well be large I'm just looking at how much thumb hangs over and comparing his fingers against the neck.

some players have smaller fingers and make large stretches look easy they just have really good technique,Shawn Lane and Andy Timmons hav small hands and the make long stretches look easy esp Lane RIP.

  • it's not as much about the length of tthe fingers but more the width of the base of your hand i.e. how far can you stretch your fingers apart..

  • Also, I'm pretty sure he's got a thin neck on that tele, which would probably make stretching a lot easier.

  • No it is a thick neck. He just has large hands :) The TLR 145 RK only comes in one model and that is the one with the jumbo neck. I have one too and it is ok once u r used to it.

  • Great rhythm and lead player.

IMO he doesn't look like he has big hands they look quite petite?

  • ya . im a big lad and i can play at a tidy pace. but damn richie has this ability to span large distances effortlessly . hand size might not come into it.his does mine dont.even though mine are probably bigger .

  • does anyone know if Ex-B is actually one of his songs?

  • the song is "Good for me" off the cd Change

  • Now that is gonna get a girl in bed

  • the end sounded very zakk like

  • Damn he's got big hands. Lucky bastard!

  • PG has got the longest fingers (especially pinky) i've seen
