I don't understand with those balloons how u really keep them under control, from flying into trees and hydro wires etc. What happens if the wind changes suddenly and takes u over populated areas, instead of open fields?

Yep!

So you need a balloonist's license, which takes approx 4-5 weeks of ground school lessons and 1 week instructional.... You can achieve it at the age of 14!!

Private pilot's licensing starts at 16.

You can then, move on to a degree at Seneca College in Toronto (or where ever) and get a Commercial license which is approx 2-3 years of schooling then.

While you are up in the air, you have a altimeter (telling you the height of how high you are from sea level) Above Sea Level (ASL)

And also you have the ground team telling you wind / weather conditions frequently..

The helium balloon test initially at the take off is the old fashioned way to determine wind direction & speed.

If post-hate is necessary to deviate direction ( power lines, housing etc etc) they have weights on board to drop ( kind of like an anchor on a boat ) which will let you come to an abrupt stop!

As long as you have height ASL, constant wind direction ( if and below <10 knots preferably)
