at around 4:50 he plays a pattern with 2 sets of chokes on the hats and one set of chokes on the crash, then he plays a fill that starts of with a crash hit.... what is the pattern of the fill...can anyone please help me with that... thanks
MIKE RULES!!!!!!!!
I think the switch between the two parts is hard. Mike doesn't really explains that well (for me that is). Is there a double bass stroke as well (in between)?
It seems like there is one stroke inbetween... As he says, the rest of the band comes in on an upbeat of the drumpattern, which is a downbeat for the other instruments. If you just stop with the snare-tom/bass-bass/snare-tom x2 pattern, you land on a downbeat. So it would seem logical that he adds a hit before the accents part(when he hits the hi-hat). If you count aloud when he does that pattern, it sounds: 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3 AND hi-hat. Seems to me he adds one bass note befor the hi'h
I think it's so funny how intensely they break down every little part and what signature it's in and how it's blending PRECISELY with the guitar and bass to create a feel. Think about that and then realize the average song length is like, 10 minutes lol. Then.... 8-9 songs per album.... then an ablum every year or two.
SO MUCH THOUGHT lol. It's what makes the mesh and the music amazing
@dooka008 Then when you realize that for the Train of Thought album, according to Mike Portnoy, they took about THREE WEEKS to write all the music....only three weeks....
His level of limb interdependence is incredible. His feet can work either as a seperate rhythm from his hands or as an extension of his hands. Phenomenal drummer.
This is why he's such a good drummer

Haha. He uses the words "kind of" almost more than those wonderful drumfills.
What a great drummer.

No. "In Constant Motion". He shows how to play different songs - which is kinda hard. Great DVD.
