If Gore had been president in 2000, things would have worked out much better. For example the foreign policy, he would have been much more active in enviromental issues than Bush, Bush didnt do much about enviromental issues at all.
What Al Bore fails to take into account when he says more CO2 is produced per unit of energy with coal is the benefits when the coal byproducts are turned into usable raw materials and usable chemicals. For instance, the sulfur dioxide is turned into either sulfuric acid or gypsum. The slag is used in asphalt, in place of sand for sandblast media, and in concrete. The fly ash replaces volcanic ash used to make concrete.
So does Al Bore not think these things reduce coal's negative impacts?
Nuclear energy is viable; the only draw back is that plant designs are going to have to deal with radio-toxicity issues? getting 10-50 years worth of commercial electricity, but having a waste product that must be safely stored for 1000+ years is no trivial matter. But nukes can be built anywhere; generally you want them safe and cost effective is part of an operation cycle. Geothermal and advanced synthetic fuels should be on this list.
Coal Kills: Coal is just as deadly as radiation from a nuclear bomb. Coal has been killing Americans for centuries. Coal should be considered a terrorist weapon not an energy source. Coal contains arsenic, lead, mercury, candium, cyanide, copper, polycyclic hydrocarbons and much more. Most EPA superfunds contain coal waste left to be cleaned up with our tax dollars. The only way to make coal clean is to leave it in the ground forever. Clean coal advertising is terrorism at its best.

@MrBullseye61 True but it hasnt actually worked out like you might think. The levels of CO2 in the air since we began measuring it about 100 years ago have increased by 50% whereas the levels of oxygen (O2) have remained constant.

Is making ways to have cleaner energy so our waterways, our air can be clean again, and our children can breathe fresh air. That is what should be at the core of this discussion. Does it exist? I believe it does and alot of others, including scientists believe it does.
My question is thie: Do you want to take a chance and ignore what everyone is saying? Or do you want to get things done?
China Huaneng Group, targets a capacity to produce about 35 percent of its electricity from clean energy by 2020
What Al Gore didn't excerpt, however:

Well as of last week, the EPA officially defined CO2 as a pollutant. That's right, when you or any other animal exhales, you are destroying the earth!!
The uncontrolled breathing must be stopped!
I think the best way to reduce CO2 output from humans is to ration how much Al Gore gets to talk. Just think how much warmer our planet is because of him constantly spewing CO2 from that hole in his face. It's the best of both worlds! We save the planet and we don't have to hear his propaganda!
It's extremely different. The source of the CO2 from industrial sources comes from fossil fuels that have been buried for millions of years underground, sequestered in stasis. Cyclical CO2 (from animals to plants, to ocean, etc.) is not the problem, and never has been.
Why is everyone ignoring firewood, farm burning, charcoal briquettes, etc as the worst sources of air pollution... 803 , you are not making any sense at all!
If there is an utility that uses firewood for electricity generation, Al Gore will tell you that firewood generate CO2. Firewood is still under the radar so far... Someday , firewood will be banned anyway..
First, ban firewood then graduate to clean coal and so on... Firewood is the worst of all hands down yet everyone think it is so romantic that you want to curl up and read a book by it... hoo boy!
He sounds reasonable and is roughly correct about offshore drilling (it won't save you; america's benn post peak oil for almost half a century now, deal with it). What makes americans go so mental whenever they see him?
Such a shame that Gore didn't pick up the phone and tell Candidate Obama that he was spreading disinformation in his speeches televised to millions during the '08 Democratic Primaries and in the nationally televised debates gong head to head against McShame.
Poor ol'Bamma, missed a huge advantage over his opponent. But just as well, two twin-party candidates both plugging "Clean Coal" at every opportunity. Along with Biden and Palin.. four Corporate parrots and they Won?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Global warming is from CO2 in the air..... People are the problem! We breathe out CO2. The increasing population is killing the planet. Kill someone today and save the planet. Start with Gore before he gives himself another award or writes another book..
ignoring the problem won't make it go away. gore is telling us there's a problem. shutting him up isn't going to help. stop driving SUVs and demand clean energy. that WILL solve the problem
What do you understand and know about energy? I guess nothing...Al Gore is pushing this bs to secure a J-O-B for himself. BTW-did you turn on your lights this evening? Where the hell do you think the power comes from?
They didn't mention the yuppie suv's and cars that dump tons more pollutants in our country ever day or the millions of miles of asphalt roads that catch the suns heat increasing the earths temp.
algore is an idiot. But all that the frigging clown doing the interview can apparently do is nod his head and mumble in agreement every once in a while. What a sycophant to lunacy.
Just to point out one thing that is wrong with what Gore said.
You can not currently bury high power lines in the ground without tremendous expense and more damage to the land. There are very good reasons why power lines the world over are on towers, even into suburban areas. You don't really see lines buried until it comes to large metro areas where the costs and engineering practicalities make sense.
Of course anyone that cares about life on Earth wants a clean planet, it's HOW we do that.
power lines are on towers because it is easier to do maintenance. there would be no more damage to the land than there is building towers. after reclaimation it will be like a gas line or towers open area.
you have that backwards, buddy. It's eaiser to to maintenance *because* power lines are on towers. Think about what extra costs there would be if you had to dig every time any maintenance needed to be done. And what happens when someone finds out that some species of dessert gerbil can't stand the digging? Power lines are on towers because all those things have already been hashed out years ago.
Not only does every credible scientist on the planet refute your remarks, your understanding of CAFE and global economics is laughable.
The big 3 will go down from their own greed, CAFE has nothing to do with the fact that they simply produced cars that no one wants (or can afford) to drive. Their only interest was their own bloated paychecks.
Stick to commenting on "Jackass" clips and Britney Spears videos.
Al Gore's "science" and knowledge is accountable to no one. He's not a scientist who has to publish peer-reviewed articles. He just cherry picks his facts or makes them up and as a politician pronounces solutions. He ins't accountable nor reliable. I don't trust this man more than I would any other politician who wants political power to control for who knows what motive. Al Gore hasn't demonstrated where his motives come from. I don't trust him at all.
That's just it, there are no motives. There are no advantages to telling the truth. No money to be made. Money is where you will find corruption and lies. The facts exist, don't listen to corperate lies.
no motives? really? notice how he so easily knocks down all forms of energy that exist? then goes on to say that the only way to save the world is to invest in things that dont exist yet. have you checked to see if maybe he might be getting money from people that make wind mills.
btw if you are a climate scientist and you receive grant money ,almost all global warming advocates do, will they get more money if they say there is or is not global warming?
I haven't checked to see if maybe he might be getting money from people that make windmills. Have you? Show me the facts, not just paranoid fantasies. Keep spreading the hate. Peace
if you are a climate scientist chances are that you make money and are funded by various grants. now if your findings indicate that the earth is going through a normal climate shift like the ones that have happened long before manmade co2 emissions and there is not much to worry about, what will happen to his funding?
if you want to make money as a scientist and get attention than u say global warming is real
so I did a little research and found out that Al founded a company called generation investment management. they sell carbon offsets. like the ones Al buys so that he can fly on his G5 guilt free. so he is buying offsets from himself. and they in turn "invest" in windmills and solar panels.
we know that these things are not viable on their own so they require public funding. that requires a crisis.
i encourage you to go to generation investment management's web site. just cut and paste its easy to find, then go to team. you may notice some other names, david blood former chief executive of goldman sachs. peter knight Al's chief of staff.
i encourage you to look for yourself.
the sources are endless.
what sources did you ask of Al?
have you looked at the increasing numbers of reputable scientist that disagree with Al?
hey elinmoco, i showed you the facts. what do you have to say now?
would you care to explain to my how asking questions is spreading hate? or is that just another baseless smrear directed towards someone the dares to disagree with you.
CleanER coal technology does exist. There is a company called Rentech that takes coal and turns it into gasoline, diesel, aviation fuel and other products that burn cleanER. It is not as clean as solar which has no pollution but that is a matter of semantics. CleanER coal technology exists.
global warming is real, it is not proven that recent(past100yrs) climate change is man-made, The only thing we can prove right now is that climate change is a natural cycle that occurs on this planet.
Gore lost me when he claimed he invented the Internet!
Clean Coal? Doesn't know what he's talking about. Even Obama knows about it! Any fuel source burned Catalytically w/90+% Eff. is going to produce similar pollution & gases near nil. What he doesn't know about is "Blue Gas"? Google: GreatPoint Energy Catalytic Coal Methanation
Can be Transported & burned like Natural Gas! Gore can still keep his pool heated 80* in Winter! Another politician who says one thing and does another! :D
Dude, really? When are people going to get over the fact that he may have mispoken slightly how many years ago? The man won the Nobel Peace Prize. Jeez.
Dude, really? When are people going to get over the fact that he may have mispoken slightly how many years ago? The man won the Nobel Peace Prize. Jeez.
Yeah....Global Warming! ....when the core of the earth is cooling and local weather has seen the longest coldest Winter in a 100yrs. In fact last year the whole Northern hemisphere had the coldest Winter in ages! ;)
He basically doesn't support anything except technologies his wife has money in, which is Wind and Solar! ...and come on Nobel Peace Prize has become the Nobel Piss Prize lately!
Al gore says first thing to do is "conservation and efficency". LowellGarrett is right. Al Gore uses so much fucking electricity he should own a solar panel or two but he wastes energy. He is trying to make a comeback to win an election. GLOBAL WARMING ISN'T REAL. just look at the link between solar flares and the Earth's average temperature. IT IS A SCAM. Al Gore makes money off this bullshit. IT'S LIKE CANCER ANOTHER SCAM.
anybody who thinks global warming is not real is a dumbass. there is NOTHING that disproves the evidence that global warming is real. why are people still denying the truth?? go look up some facts!
The argument isn't if it's man-made, it's ignorant people who think that. The argument is if humans are speeding it up and making it worse, because the last time global warming happened, humans didn't have combustion engines. What do I think? I think we are speeding it up, but we won't actually know until global warming gets to it's peak and the world starts to cool down.
DirtyHarrywk: the problem isn't if humans cause a lot or a little of global warming, it's the fact that we are contributing to it. we can do something about our effects on the world and we should be focusing on what that is, not blaming other things we can't control.
This guy dosen't know what he's talking about. I'm from Wyoming where we have several coal mines.
We do have clean coal, most of our equipment actually goes to cleaning. Their highest pollutant right now is mercury. About 2 gallons of mercury comes out a year.Their looking to cut that in half.
Na you were the retard by calling the other guy an idiot because he didnt buy into the global warming BS introduced via a *YOUR KILLING THE EARTH!!! guilt trip. And who said anything about a goal? I was calling you name. (shrugs)
looks like you need to go back to school and learn proper discourse. You said "How was that? Mean enough?". So your even more of a retard than I had initially thought. You might need some retalin.
ooh BURN! you know maybe some ppl just dont spend their whole day tryin to perfect youtube comments with perfect grammer lol Why are you such a retarded bitch? Did you mom have chlamydia or something? Stupid name too. Fuck you pussy!!!!!!!!!!!!
Al Gore is Bill Clinton's right hand man during the wonderful Clinton administration....
I hate South Park guys for making him seem so silly .... This guy is one of the very few in power that are trying to make things happen as far as clean energy .. & guess what??? Obama and Biden are also fighting for this to happen its going to be tough but we'll make it !!

It is too bad that the interview did not last long enough for Al Gore to respond to the last part of the original multiple part question; the last part asking his view of nuclear energy.
I agree with Al Gore that clean coal is a misnomer and that solar energy is a good way to go. However it should be remembered that solar energy is nuclear energy where the natural nuclear reactor happens to be 94 million miles away. Solar is good it because nuclear is good. Nuclear is good because it is not chemical and leaves no undesired chemicals behind. Instead of going 94 million miles away for our nuclear energy we should consider accessing our abundant nuclear energy on the lithosphere.
No undesirable chemicals behind? Radioactive waste that needs to be stored for thousands to hundreds of thousands of years before it can be exposed again? Remember that human civilization has existed for hardly a few thousand years. And then consider geologic activity. There's hardly any safe place to put anything for that long.
Plutonium is a man made element. Its radioactivity is dangerous. Its radioactivity is a nuclear, not a chemical, property. Please read my following comment where I state that uranium fission is not the only way to access nuclear energy. It is not nuclear energy itself but the way that we are doing it that is the problem.
Okay, good catch. But that's like saying, "I didn't stab him; I shot him." What makes nuclear waste any safer than chemical waste?
And the only other way to get net gain of energy from nuclear resources is fusion, and there is no practical way to access that in a controlled manner. Nor is there any progress that suggests that will happen in the near future, if ever.
Your concerns about the disposal of waste from uranium fission are well founded. However my position is that there are nuclear methods beyond U fission and hydrogen fusion. The method that I have in mind does not produce harmful byproducts. This method can not be deployed to make bombs. Its purpose is the production of electricity without a carbon footprint. The isotopes required are relatively abundant. I hope that Al Gore and Dr. Chu will be interested.
at present, there is no such thing as AlGore and rational intelligence.
coal provides 49% of ALL of the US electric power. I want to see this moran get away with powering his megahouse without coal power out there.
as for 'offshore drilling' AlGore, DEPLETION is the word moran -- DEPLETION. We will NOT turn this country in the next two dozen years at best. Without replacement for depeltion, we are screwed. Wait till Mexico imports go offline in two years -- you'l wish for offshore!
I have searched my Merriam-Webster's 11th Collegiate Dictionary for the word "moran." I can not find it there. The Moran's (proper name) that I have known seem like perfectly good people to me. Are you associating Al Gore with that family? Is there a family connection? If so which Moran did you have in mind?
Mr. Gore and myself obviously have different views on what Clean Coal is. We've actually had Clean Coal technology for several years, in fact there is very little technology involved. Instead of directly burning the coal, a flame would be blown onto a filter made of a certain catalyst (I forget what exactly, I learned about this 2 years ago) which does deteriorate, but is simply cycled through to be reused. This different method of burning removes about 99% of the carbon, so it still is CO2.
he didn't say anything about nuclear

Pandonodrim 2 years ago
How is CO2 from industrial sources different from the CO2 we exhale?
gerbinator2009 2 years ago
It's extremely different. The source of the CO2 from industrial sources comes from fossil fuels that have been buried for millions of years underground, sequestered in stasis. Cyclical CO2 (from animals to plants, to ocean, etc.) is not the problem, and never has been.

Why is everyone ignoring firewood, farm burning, charcoal briquettes, etc as the worst sources of air pollution... 803 , you are not making any sense at all!
junkyardnut 2 years ago
Al Gore would never dare utter the word or phrase "Firewood is dirty, too"... never ! He sidestepped firewood!!
junkyardnut 2 years ago
You are just trying to replace coal with even worse ... firewood! and paying through your nose for that...
junkyardnut 2 years ago
If there is an utility that uses firewood for electricity generation, Al Gore will tell you that firewood generate CO2. Firewood is still under the radar so far... Someday , firewood will be banned anyway..
junkyardnut 2 years ago
First, ban firewood then graduate to clean coal and so on... Firewood is the worst of all hands down yet everyone think it is so romantic that you want to curl up and read a book by it... hoo boy!

ban firewood? lol thats the most rediculous thing I ever heard.
in the imperialism state not many folks use firewood and its smoggy as hell.
here in federally occupied South Carolina everybody burns firewood and we have clean fresh country air.

Just to point out one thing that is wrong with what Gore said.
You can not currently bury high power lines in the ground without tremendous expense and more damage to the land. There are very good reasons why power lines the world over are on towers, even into suburban areas. You don't really see lines buried until it comes to large metro areas where the costs and engineering practicalities make sense.
Of course anyone that cares about life on Earth wants a clean planet, it's HOW we do that.
kmg501 3 years ago
power lines are on towers because it is easier to do maintenance. there would be no more damage to the land than there is building towers. after reclaimation it will be like a gas line or towers open area.
victor2cutube 3 years ago
you have that backwards, buddy.

I don't trust him at all.
turnkit 3 years ago
That's just it, there are no motives. There are no advantages to telling the truth. No money to be made. Money is where you will find corruption and lies. The facts exist, don't listen to corperate lies.
elinmoco 3 years ago
no motives? really? notice how he so easily knocks down all forms of energy that exist? then goes on to say that the only way to save the world is to invest in things that dont exist yet. have you checked to see if maybe he might be getting money from people that make wind mills.
btw if you are a climate scientist and you receive grant money ,almost all global warming advocates do, will they get more money if they say there is or is not global warming?
gluton4beer 3 years ago
I haven't checked to see if maybe he might be getting money from people that make windmills. Have you? Show me the facts, not just paranoid fantasies. Keep spreading the hate. Peace
elinmoco 3 years ago
keep spreading hate? wtf?
i think i possed a pretty logical question.
if you are a climate scientist chances are that you make money and are funded by various grants. now if your findings indicate that the earth is going through a normal climate shift like the ones that have happened long before manmade co2 emissions and there is not much to worry about, what will happen to his funding?
if you want to make money as a scientist and get attention than u say global warming is real
gluton4beer 3 years ago
so I did a little research and found out that Al founded a company called generation investment management. they sell carbon offsets. like the ones Al buys so that he can fly on his G5 guilt free. so he is buying offsets from himself. and they in turn "invest" in windmills and solar panels.
we know that these things are not viable on their own so they require public funding. that requires a crisis.
"paranoid fantasies?" nope, cold hard facts.
Al Gore profits from global warming.

The argument isn't if it's man-made, it's ignorant people who think that. The argument is if humans are speeding it up and making it worse, because the last time global warming happened, humans didn't have combustion engines. What do I think? I think we are speeding it up, but we won't actually know until global warming gets to it's peak and the world starts to cool down.

propagandeclan 3 years ago
It is too bad that the interview did not last long enough for Al Gore to respond to the last part of the original multiple part question; the last part asking his view of nuclear energy.
gnosticbeemer 3 years ago
It would also be incorrect to think that uranium fission is the only way to do artificial (human designed) nuclear energy.
gnosticbeemer 3 years ago
I agree with Al Gore that clean coal is a misnomer and that solar energy is a good way to go. However it should be remembered that solar energy is nuclear energy where the natural nuclear reactor happens to be 94 million miles away. Solar is good it because nuclear is good. Nuclear is good because it is not chemical and leaves no undesired chemicals behind. Instead of going 94 million miles away for our nuclear energy we should consider accessing our abundant nuclear energy on the lithosphere.
gnosticbeemer 3 years ago
No undesirable chemicals behind? Radioactive waste that needs to be stored for thousands to hundreds of thousands of years before it can be exposed again? Remember that human civilization has existed for hardly a few thousand years. And then consider geologic activity. There's hardly any safe place to put anything for that long.
chemequilibrium 3 years ago
Plutonium is a man made element. Its radioactivity is dangerous. Its radioactivity is a nuclear, not a chemical, property. Please read my following comment where I state that uranium fission is not the only way to access nuclear energy. It is not nuclear energy itself but the way that we are doing it that is the problem.
gnosticbeemer 3 years ago
Okay, good catch. But that's like saying, "I didn't stab him; I shot him." What makes nuclear waste any safer than chemical waste?
And the only other way to get net gain of energy from nuclear resources is fusion, and there is no practical way to access that in a controlled manner. Nor is there any progress that suggests that will happen in the near future, if ever.
chemequilibrium 3 years ago
Your concerns about the disposal of waste from uranium fission are well founded. However my position is that there are nuclear methods beyond U fission and hydrogen fusion. The method that I have in mind does not produce harmful byproducts. This method can not be deployed to make bombs. Its purpose is the production of electricity without a carbon footprint. The isotopes required are relatively abundant. I hope that Al Gore and Dr. Chu will be interested.
gnosticbeemer 2 years ago
at present, there is no such thing as AlGore and rational intelligence.
coal provides 49% of ALL of the US electric power. I want to see this moran get away with powering his megahouse without coal power out there.
as for 'offshore drilling' AlGore, DEPLETION is the word moran -- DEPLETION. We will NOT turn this country in the next two dozen years at best. Without replacement for depeltion, we are screwed. Wait till Mexico imports go offline in two years -- you'l wish for offshore!
drumsnbass 3 years ago
I have searched my Merriam-Webster's 11th Collegiate Dictionary for the word "moran." I can not find it there. The Moran's (proper name) that I have known seem like perfectly good people to me. Are you associating Al Gore with that family? Is there a family connection? If so which Moran did you have in mind?
gnosticbeemer 3 years ago
