I prefer Vivica Genaux in lower roles. I find her high notes shallow and unfocused. And this "beat" creeps in when she sustains them. Her low register is much more attractive--warm and gleaming. I'm glad they cast her as Polinesso.
So Vivica has to die again on stage in Vienna, although she prefers to kill lol.
Had hoped SO MUCH for her being Ario on day. But seems chanceless. Well better Poli than nothing, but she can't show her full range here, her unique runs with 1 single breath over 2 octaves as Ariodante could *sigh*
Life is hard ;-) CU tomorrow Wiener
PS: at least for Dopo Notte - couldn't they quickly put her in the dress of Ariodante and make the baroque world a better place??
She has sung it. A few years ago, twice in the US. The reviews said the voice was too ugly for the role of the hero (which it may well be), and also not up to the long role (which may also be true, its a killer), hence why she is singing Polinesso (a villain - her harsh tone is perfect for it) and Bradamante, the roles are less taxing. Its also quite a small voice.
But I've never heard a rec of her early US Ariodante. Fortunately we have her GREAT Dopo notte from a recital. Con l'ali di costanza would be very interesting as well, but seems hopeless.
Less taxing: Ariodante is surely one of the or THE most taxing Handel opera role, but a concert with Dopo notte, Scherza infida, Vedro con mio diletto (Vivaldi), Fammi combattere, Lascia whatever, Sposa son disprezzata and(!) Qual guerriero seems to me as well challenging. That's what she sang within 2 hrs.
Hmmm....then is interesting her latest roles have tended to the supporting (Bradamante instead of Ruggiero, Polinesso instead of Ariodante, Juno/Ino) BUT her future is full of lead roles: Irene, Isabella, Piacere, Falliero, Angelina, Nerone, Orlando, Rodrigo...perhaps she just felt like singing less at the time.
¡Maravilloso! Muchas gracias por el post :o)

To slow and without energy... Podles is the winner

Don't appreciate the "retracted" sounds at all. I am sure Vivica has a beautiful voice without doing this manufactured sound. Why does she do it?

Nice singing but a little gentle and sweet for an aria of such conviction. Ewa Podles owns this one for sure.

I agree, Polinesso by Podles is perfect.
And Vivica hast to, I repeat: SHE HAS TO sing Ariodante as soon as possible! How often do I have to repeat this??
