@zombiefan011 He explains at some point in the film how everyone turned their backs on him, save Keyleigh's father. He's basically saying in this scene how he thinks nothing would have changed should he go back, and he'll be seen as someone that's pretty worthless and useless 'in their eyes.' He wanted to be a knight if memory serves correctly, but since he turned blind (site must've been a requirement) and Keyleigh's father died, no-one was there to help him through.

i think the difference b/w the reprise and the actual song is that the song he shows off how great it feels to be away from prying eyes and how he feels in control and at peace w his surroundings... a strong tree that needs no one.

the reprise however, hits him w loneliness. he may have been lonely b4 he met kaylee but it nvr really bothered him. she seeped into his life and he didnt realize how much she effected him until she was gone - "all by myself i stand alone" - one lone, gnarled tree

Gah, I so love this part. Really tugs at my heartstrings, yanno? It's so awkward hearing, however, how different Garrett's speaking and singing voices are. I know people will disagree with me on it, but they're fooling themselves.
