"My faith is in mankind..." Che guevara. i'd say this is similar to Connolly's point of view. If you read his writings you will see that he was almost prophetic. All that's been done is the changing of the colour of the flag and the names of the rich.
There are two big differences between James Connolly and Che.
1) James Connolly wasn't a cold blooded murder.
2) Che was a complete failure in everything he did.
B.T.W One of the main points of Socialism is to stop wars between nations and create class warfare. Just another attempt to strip people of their culture and turn brother against brother.
2) Che won in Cuba? The same could be said about James Connolly, his biggest achievement was inspiring years of Republican struggle against Britain. (no mean feat)
BTW yes Socialism is about Nations being friendly and to stop "brother" from financially and socially raping "brother" Connolly was a proud Irish Republican Socialist. If only more of us were the same. Connolly would be turning in his grave at this horrific Banana Republic we have.
The other half of my family lived under the shit in Slovakia. Socialism/Communism leads to the death of nationalism and culture.
There is no myth behind James Connolly. Everything he did was well documented. The same can't be said of "Che". Had "Che" not met the Castro brothers, he would have continued to go from flophouse to flophouse. To say "Che" was anything but a cold blooded murder would be a lie. By saying this I in no way condone or what Batista did.
i have been trying to figure out who i am for years but no one in my family has an answer. my last name is connely and all i can ever find are names that closely relate to it, but are not the exactly the same. is it possible that my ancestors before they came to canada just made up / changed there family name?
the cause of irish reunification has everything to do with religion!!! lets be honest about it! of course there are many other factors but religion is at the heart of it. Until we overcome these petty differences, Ireland will never be free. We have to realise that Ireland can be free, Ireland can be united but only if we treat each other as equals,
"If you remove the British Army tomorrow and hoist the Green flag over Dublin castle [paraphrased to Stormont Castle], unless you organise a Socialist Republic all your efforts will have been in vain and England will still rule you through her landlords, Capitalists and Commercial institutions." James Connolly, Dublin Lockout 1913. The Provos and Sinn Fein have nearly got us as far as where Connolly describes above. Support the Movement. Tiocfaidh Ar La to ALL Republicans, official or otherwise.
One must always remember that James Connelly organized many workers long before he took to arms. The captialists do have superior firearms and are far less moral in the way they fight.
I also have no respect for you right wing catholic "republicans" as far as I am concerned you guys are just the same as the Brits... you just happened to be born Irish. At the same time British Anarchists and Socialists know that they are not hated simply for where they were born.
I'm neither a communist nor a Catholic, but James Connolly is still a hero to me. It's hard not to like him - he possessed such a mix of courage and decency as the world seldom sees.

I never said his faith didn't mean much to him. But my point is, had he been Protestant or Atheist, Muslim or Hindu, James Connolly would still have been every bit as great a man as he was. His faith was part of who he was, but it did not define him.
@tlaney1776 This is simply not true. Connolly grew up Roman Catholic, he married a protestant girl called Lillie Reynolds. You should read the book 'Connolly -A Full life' by Donal Nevin . Its the most comprehensive biography to date. It contains private correspondence writen by James Connolly himself in which he reveals that he was an atheist. Not surprising as he was a Marxist. The national question has nothing to do with religion in anycase.
@tlaney1776 And to be honest the Catholic church has never supported Republicanism and if anything has been something of a Fifth Column within the struggle.
@tlaney1776 Yet he also said "though I have usually posed as a Catholic, I have not done my duty for 15 years, and have not the slightest tincture of faith left" Either way, the matter is unclear. It is safe to say he struggled with religious faith and at times rejected it personally. As such, to speak of his religious beliefs with certainty is a bit of a misappropriation. I have to agree with Unified32 on this, Connolly was a great hero, regardless of his religious identity or lack thereof.
James Connolly was made a Confession and recieved the Holy Communion before his execution. Connolly had also been referred to as a "Jesuit spy" by some socialists. As for the IRB they poorly armed both the ICA and the Hibernian Rifles (exclusively Catholic Nationalist).
James Connolly loved his family, his friends and comrade soldiers, his country and all who work for an honest living.
Always remember, he died a Catholic in the finest traditions and truths of Catholic Justice and the Catholic duty to The Good Fight for the Solidarity Society.
His religion has nothing to do with how great a man he was. There have been many fine Protestants and Atheists that have given their all in the fight for Irish Freedom.
@Unified32 Of course other religions have given their lives and livelyhoods for the cause of irish freedom. All I am saying is that his faith helped to shape his beliefs, as it should. One's faith (or simply their beliefs in the divine of lack thereof) makes an individual. It shapes their views and how they act. Lets not argue and agree that James Connolly was a great man fighting righteously for Irish freedom. May the Irish language return and Freedom to Northern Ireland!
I'm a Protestant. I don't hate Catholics, in fact most of my family is Catholic, and I support FULLY a Britain-free Ireland. My religion has nothing to do with my views, since religion divided the country in the first place. I don't even like saying I'm Protestant...I'm a Christian. That's why after studying years on how Britain has tormented the Irish for their faith, I want them out. Gone. Once again though, it's not always religion, sometimes it's just who wants to see Ireland freed.
British propaganda paints the conflict in the north of Ireland to the world as a religious conflict between Catholics and Protestants. This is false. The British occupation of Ireland is the root cause of the conflict, not religion. Many Protestants throught the centuries have played important roles in the Republican movment, right from its foundation. The Orange in the Irish tricolour represents Protestants, The founding father of Irish Republicanism, Wolfe Tone was a Protestant.
surely the no countries socialism is contrary to Connollys nationalistic socialist ? but your no countries future is good for capitalism is it not the free movement of cheap goods and labour, just similiar to the empire of the brits, russians, japs or yanks. why not socilism in one area first then show the example? dont just mouth platatudes did Connelly get it right or was he an early Strasserite?
James connolly was a british born man, edinburgh in fact. He died for OUR country, so those who do not respect this are a disgrace to god. Never a truer word; "the british have no right in ireland, never had any right in ireland, and NEVER can have any right in ireland". God bless. Remember 1916 1972 1981
your my hero along with micheal collins but you have more respect cause you died for country in fact any person who dies for there country has my respect
92 years ago today 12 May 1916 James Connolly and Sean Mac Diarmada both signatories to the Proclamation were the last of the 14 leaders of the Easter Rising to be executed in Stone Breakers yard. I remember these great men today and my heart is saddened by the cruelty and injustice of their murders. JC will also be remembered not only as a great freedom fighter and supporter of the working man but also as a true champion of equal rights for women. RIP - Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam
History in Ireland teaches us there are plenty of revolutionary forces beneath the surface, which will rise as the inevitable hard times come around. Unfortunately history also shows that pain is a prerequisite, to society's evolution and personal development. Technology like YouTube properly used, can also be a powerful tool in the struggle.
Reactionaries, cannot set agenda. Connolly a Marxist stated, the cause of Ireland is the cause of labour and the cause of labour is the cause of Ireland. The class struggle is worldwide. Our duty is to understand what exactly Connolly gave his life for. Ireland needs proactive leadership as capitalism implodes. The everyday class struggles about us, are the learning curve. Liberation is an international not to be confused with exclusive nationalistic fascism.
Good video. There is no future in reactionary statements, or intent, divide and conquer was always the way of the oppressor. United we stand divided we fall. Each of us gives as we are able. Pro-actively we are going to achieve all of what they lived and died for. Capitalism will destroy itself, extreme selfishness, self-centredness and self will are going nowhere in the long run. The spirit of freedom is alive and well in Ireland. We celebrate that in song everyday in Ireland.
I am Repulican through and through my friend but I must disagree with you and partialy agree with aidpec. The spirit of freedom in this country is "alive" but it is certainly not "well" The majority living within the 26 county institution and a loyt within even the 6 county regime, are too willing to conform to the status quo and accept British rule on our Island. Too unwilling to rock the boat.
I don't think its a question of rocking the boat, myself as a southern, working class, republican don't believe that another campaign of violence will bring about a united Ireland in todays society, I think the struggle has brought about a lot of good and all other progress now has to go through political channels, the dream is still alive and will be a reality one day.
to agree with what you said we would would have to neglect what happened that got us to the peace talks. the british only understand violence, so lets see if they suddenly pack up leave now that we're 'friends'.
its clear capitalism isn't going to destroy itself, its never been stronger. as for Ireland, open your eyes, we've never been more selfish - spirit of freedom? the Irish sell out republicans every chance they get and the gardai are like a branch of the PSNI special branch. i read some of these statements and wonder are you living in a poetic bubble?
hanvectormulhoon..i dont know if youre from the north or even from ireland the dream went from the republic years ago i was talking about the island as a whole.most people in the south couldnt give a shit about the easter men or what they died for, that was my argument.
how is this dream gone (maybe in the free-state it is) here in belfast we continue to chase this dream putting our trust in the freedom-fighters like the inla/cira/rira etc
maybe it is made harder by traitors like the free-staters and sein fein who sold us out but we still try our best as these heroes did
whenever isee the image of james connolly and what he did for my father country, I feel sorrow for my fellow americans who used to have a will identical to that of Connolly.
im scots and so was connolly.....my contry is a disgrace..poddy england took over we were weak the irish were not...get them out nad by god fight them to the end..GET TEHM OUT!!!!!!
James Connolly, of the Cowgate and of Ireland was a true internationalist, let us celebrate his greatness, without descending into bickering over what tribal marking he bore. He lives on though his work is far from finished. Viva James Connolly!
De Velera a traitor to the Irish nation who gave up Micheall Collins to the British empire who left for America during the hieght of the fighting in the aftermath of the 1916 rising on an egotistical journey that bore very little fruit or finance.
All the 1916 leaders were brave and are to be admired! But Connolly has to be my favourite,he fought for freedom for the working class and not just in Ireland!Love this song, would love to know who sings it!
just to clarify, twice general connolly has been refered to as a scot.General Connolly was born in ireland,co.monaghan but moved to scotland at a very young age, therefore irish, not scottish, however im willing to say irish~scot.P.H.Pearse,did you guys know his father was english.he once told his students at st.Endas that if ireland gained her independence that it would be through the son of an englishman.powerfully read, made the hair on my neck stand up.
Iam english but never BRITISH my mums family is from cork ,so i always follow my irish roots.Stood where they shot connolly.godbless connolly and thank you and rest in peace james connolly
Now that the Catholic church has been exposed for what it really is, the Unionists might finally be getting the point that to unite will be of benefit of both Irelands. Cursed by history, we will see.....

@tlaney1776 you say that James Connolly's Catholic meant much to him but yet in January 1908 on his personal position to Catholicism he stated,
'though I have usually posed as a Catholic, I have not done my faith for 15 years, and have not the slightest tincture of faith left.'
Furthermore, is it not true that members of the IRB disliked James Connolly's ICA because of his athiestic beliefs?

@0Mark8

God has blessed this immense man for eternity.
Our job is to carry on the fight.
tlaney1776 3 years ago 5
His religion has nothing to do with how great a man he was. There have been many fine Protestants and Atheists that have given their all in the fight for Irish Freedom.
Unified32 3 years ago 14
@Unified32 Of course other religions have given their lives and livelyhoods for the cause of irish freedom. All I am saying is that his faith helped to shape his beliefs, as it should. One's faith (or simply their beliefs in the divine of lack thereof) makes an individual. It shapes their views and how they act. Lets not argue and agree that James Connolly was a great man fighting righteously for Irish freedom. May the Irish language return and Freedom to Northern Ireland!
musicman45805 7 months ago
I'm a Protestant. I don't hate Catholics, in fact most of my family is Catholic, and I support FULLY a Britain-free Ireland. My religion has nothing to do with my views, since religion divided the country in the first place. I don't even like saying I'm Protestant...I'm a Christian. That's why after studying years on how Britain has tormented the Irish for their faith, I want them out. Gone. Once again though, it's not always religion, sometimes it's just who wants to see Ireland freed.
irishcajun85 2 years ago 3
British propaganda paints the conflict in the north of Ireland to the world as a religious conflict between Catholics and Protestants. This is false. The British occupation of Ireland is the root cause of the conflict, not religion. Many Protestants throught the centuries have played important roles in the Republican movment, right from its foundation. The Orange in the Irish tricolour represents Protestants, The founding father of Irish Republicanism, Wolfe Tone was a Protestant.
M1L3Y 2 years ago 2
Indeed. I've always had someone tell me, "oh, your parents are protestants, you can't support Ireland."
The cause of Irish reunification should never be about religion. It is a conflict between an oppressed people and an occupying force.

surely the no countries socialism is contrary to Connollys nationalistic socialist ? but your no countries future is good for capitalism is it not the free movement of cheap goods and labour, just similiar to the empire of the brits, russians, japs or yanks. why not socilism in one area first then show the example? dont just mouth platatudes did Connelly get it right or was he an early Strasserite?

James connolly was a british born man, edinburgh in fact. He died for OUR country, so those who do not respect this are a disgrace to god. Never a truer word; "the british have no right in ireland, never had any right in ireland, and NEVER can have any right in ireland". God bless. Remember 1916 1972 1981

MODMAROON 3 years ago

MODMAROON 4 years ago
I am Repulican through and through my friend but I must disagree with you and partialy agree with aidpec. The spirit of freedom in this country is "alive" but it is certainly not "well" The majority living within the 26 county institution and a loyt within even the 6 county regime, are too willing to conform to the status quo and accept British rule on our Island. Too unwilling to rock the boat.
Unified32 4 years ago
I don't think its a question of rocking the boat, myself as a southern, working class, republican don't believe that another campaign of violence will bring about a united Ireland in todays society, I think the struggle has brought about a lot of good and all other progress now has to go through political channels, the dream is still alive and will be a reality one day.
donjohnson1901 3 years ago
to agree with what you said we would would have to neglect what happened that got us to the peace talks. the british only understand violence, so lets see if they suddenly pack up leave now that we're 'friends'.
gjbritton1 3 years ago
its clear capitalism isn't going to destroy itself, its never been stronger. as for Ireland, open your eyes, we've never been more selfish - spirit of freedom? the Irish sell out republicans every chance they get and the gardai are like a branch of the PSNI special branch. i read some of these statements and wonder are you living in a poetic bubble?
gjbritton1 3 years ago
hanvectormulhoon..i dont know if youre from the north or even from ireland the dream went from the republic years ago i was talking about the island as a whole.most people in the south couldnt give a shit about the easter men or what they died for, that was my argument.

how is this dream gone (maybe in the free-state it is) here in belfast we continue to chase this dream putting our trust in the freedom-fighters like the inla/cira/rira etc
maybe it is made harder by traitors like the free-staters and sein fein who sold us out but we still try our best as these heroes did
