Normfromal turned me on to the latest dvd called "there's no place like home" You sooooo need to get this concert dvd. The group all look better than they have in 10-15 years. They are incredibly tight, and Steve has truly recovered from any addiction demons. They are as good in this concert as any I have seen. And I have seen MANY!
The vocals just suck.what happened to his voice?the original album cut is incredible, but all the rest of the versions are bad because of his lousy singing
This is an awesome performance. These guys are giving the audience everything they have. Life can be a difficult gig. They're performimg in "hair metal ally". The music they're performing has been passed up by Joe Q. Public, who, at the time of this performance is in the process of passing up hair metal for grunge. I'm glad that they believe in what they're doing. Quite remarkable.
A Valiant but difficult to listen to attempt at one of the single greatest songs in music history, it sums up how i see the world at my core. What a beautiful song.
I would buy this on DVD, because A. Kansas rules, no matter what, B. Even though Walsh's was leaping around like a madman and sounds like a very drunk Axl Rose, the band was ON FIRE. and C. David Ragsdale on violin. Rags is an absolute beast on the fiddle, and a pretty decent on rhythm guitar!
Doesn't sound like he took anything here. Anyone who has ever performed will know EXACTLY what's going on here... vocal strain. This can happen from doing a lot of gigs, like later in a tour, or, as the result of mild laryngitis. All he needed here was a good week's rest on the vocal cords to fix him right up

Good thing the audience was so stoned they didn't realize how bad the vocals sucked compared to the original. Was he auditioning for the bay city rollers what the fuck?
My take on Steve Walsh is that most of his problems in life have been self induced. The rest of the band is great here though.
I have read a few of the comments, and I agree that they have done it "better" live if you're judging by how faithful the rendition is to the original, or even by how well Walsh pulls it off from a technical standpoint...but..Good music, and especailly this song, invokes feeling with sound, and can and does ultimately affect all five senses. It should make you laugh or cry by exposing emotions deep in your soul in a crescendo of uncontrollable goose bumps. This heartfelt version does it for me.
Well kudos to him for surviving all that and staying strong. This group was highly underrated. I liked their comination of instruments. They were kind of like Queen in that respect. They weren't afraid to add some strings to their mix. My all time favorite of theirs is Dust in the Wind. Thanks for posting this.
He is so whacked out on Coke in this video. You can tell, especially when he touched his nose every few minutes. His voice is nothing like the pure soaring tenor he had in this song in '77. "Tis a damn shame...
amazing!Steve Walsh is Kansas, I don't care what anyone says! The man has more passion than any singer/performer in music, and his frontman ability is unsurpassed!!!
I remember seeing Kansas live many times when I was younger in my late teens, and they were awesome. Hell, I still remember trying to get out of the parking lot and a drunk girl sitting on the passenger window of her friends car screaming "Steve Walsh is the Ultimate". I never laughed so hard but she was right on! I love him and I'm so happy he's found some peace. For a man to bring so much joy to others, he deserves joy back in spades!!!
It's called inner emotional and spiritual breakdown..Drugs have always been an issue in musicians life..are you kidding ..it's nothing new..this band always was a christian rock band back in the day ..However, every band has it's day!!!!It's all part of being human~~
@debbiechickie5 If by "performer" you mean singer, then yes, Karen Carpenter was a brilliant singer with one of the most pure voices of the past 100 years. If you don't think so, download a few of her songs and then come back to comment.
Yes Debbie Chickie...while you are right....you are an idiot to think you are teaching us anything about great performers and artists. Remember Karen Carpenter starved herself to death. What does that prove? Only that you do not understand what motivates brilliance because you have none. Now go chew you ear off like Van Gogh and see if anyone remembers you for it.
@ianmackenziedavis I'm not here to "teach" anything. You don't know anything about me, but I see you have the whole "hater" life down pat. Nice comments. Good luck with that. And good luck with finding references to how VanGogh "chewed his ear off".
A former co-worker / fellow Kansas fan told me that Walsh had been suffering from a fever that was approaching 104 degrees prior to this show ... drug use, not withstanding, being sick certainly can cause this sort of vocal imperfection. Having sung sick myself, I certainly give Steve credit for making a good effort.
I saw Kansas when they opened up for Yes in 2000. I loved their performance. Steve Walsh was amazing. Ever since Kansas came onto my radar, I have loved his voice, and still do, regardless of some of the setbacks he had in the past. I'm glad he's doing better now.
Back before youtube, "Live at the Wiskey" was the only VHS the band offered. I remember watching it once and thinking, poor Stevie, wtf? The real travesty is when Kerry split and Steve was left to recycle Kerry's material. Together, Steve with the greatest blues voice I've ever heard and Kerry for arguably the greatest lyrical content, could have continued to astronomical heights after PoKR. Don't forget Dave and Robbie had their drug issues too.
you know there are a lot of stone throwers out there (debbiechickie5) this is one talented man who can sing HIGH better than most "straight" ive seen them 7 times this IS ONE FINE MAN !! and you should get your facts right hes YOUNG here not 41 and ... Wow, drugs can screw up a voice that bad? And he does act a little wierd for a band like this. Is this why there popularity declined? It's too bad. The band sounded great.
Like some of the other Kansas videos of this time period - I find it hard to watch. I, too, am glad Steve recovered, but knowing that doesn't make it any easier to watch this.
watch the youtube pinnicle then watch this crap...he destroyed what was maybe the musically most talented group of the 70s and early 80's. I am glad he recovered...but I think it really hurt the band during that time...plus switching violinests didn't help, vocals really suffered.
It is sad. The band sounds spectacular and he's shot. You can hear that great voice, but it's raggy from partying and the theatrics are embarrassing. Amazing enough though I've seen videos here from 3 year old concerts and he sounds just fine. He must have recovered or he wouldn't be able to do that 15 years later. He is far from going through the motions. They are the rare exception of a band hanging around yet still sounding pretty good.
""he looks higher than a kite,,,,,,to be honest,,,but,,,,he is a great singer and piano player,,, and to be honest,,,you play better when your "high" on drugs or alcohol,,,,trust me,,,,,
@ericjatziryjurado26 just look at the crowd. they all look higher than a kite. maybe all the crowd was stoning and it affected steve and the band.....likely not.
I don't know when Steve started with drugs, but Rickyon (youtube user) said that his use was "recreational" during the 70s, and it got worse during the Streets Era.
steve might have been on drugs at the time but it just sounds like he blew his voice that night. and was having problems singing high so he took a artsy take on it
I am really sick of all you haters WE were all taking drugs then and he NEVER sang or LOOKED bad so get off yoiur soapbox and enjoy this fine piece of history
I saw Kansas on this tour in a club and they were absolutely smokin'. Walsh put on a vigerous, highly visual show. The rest of the band turned in a great performance on every track they did that night. I saw them once before this when Steve Morse was playing with them and two times after this but it was this show that always stands out to me.
Look at the smile when he sings the first time "All I wanna be, it's just a travesty" I think the smile told: Ironic.
Though it's not THAT bad here, but now, and before this point his voice it is just adorable. He can sing all the styles: The rock voice, the smooth voice (and the flute), the metal voice! I really like his singing.
I don't think Steve was on drugs at all. Put the video in context. At this time he was into performing ARTS. These arts included theatrical performance. Though he has said in interviews that he wishes he had never gotten into the theatrics, at the time he brought interest to a large pop culture crowd who had a very little attention span with the onslaught of videos produced at the time. Steve is one of the greatest rock performers ever!
@AB21893 Umm..he says in later years he was all kinds of messsed up on drugs & booze as well as very depressed that his own projects had been ignored by marketers and music promotions....his life is awonerful, hideous journey...seems like he has finally found a small measure of peace with his family & new wife...but is still haunted by grapples with sobriety.
Oh, this is sad, and a shame. I hate what drugs can do to people who are so massively talented. Just really, really sad. I hope that he is past all this. This is one of my favorite songs.
Steve is about 41 here & in the throes of a mid-life crisis...lots of drugs. Per interviews, he supposedly is now clean/sober & has another wife (over 10 years ago)& young kids, so is staying clean. He plays with Kansas to pay the bills. Peroid. Once he became famous, he went to hell in a handbasket:tons of plastic surgery, dental implants, drugs. So talented, so tortured.
@debbiechickie5 I have been a major Kansas fan since the beginning. You just don't find musicianship/songwriting like that every day. I saw them about 4 years ago. The concert was amazing, I couldn't stop thinking about it for days. Steve had one of the guitarists covering his really high notes, but other than that, he sounded fantastic. I'm ashamed at how people are picking him apart here. Walk a mile in his shoes.
The '2 for the Show' live album reflects some of the band's beautiful and complex arrangements and Walsh was awesome there and thriughout their era. Steve is not the same here, sadly in a way. I hope he has realised that and changed to his brilliant self. When was the concert held ? How is he now ? Legendary Kansas from those days nevertheless. Special and unique category in the musical hall of fame for them !
I love and own this video, but I have a hard time watching it. It's because of that creepy dude in the front row bobbing back and forth and staring at Steve the whole time. He creeps me out. Steve is the GREATEST - Period
Yeah sounds like he really beat the shit out of his voice. I love this tune, but with his voice in that shape he really can't carry the melody very well. I've heard more recent stuff from them that sounds a lot better, but it still sounds like he's done some permanent damage to his voice.
Steve had throat surgery done in the mid 90s and his nasal nerve linings are damaged due to his coke use (producing the nasally sound still today). He still sounds great--MUCH better than this video!
oh boy.... painful to watch this... here's this sophisticated complex melodic band,, and steve here is obviously NOT himself... the groggy vocals the crazy eyes.....a point in time... ( still give him mad props he's a vocal master).. but this was not his high point.. wait... maybe it was his ( high) point...
I think this song SHOULD be sung by a soared voice because it reflects the pain much better...so I go on the record and say that I like this version even better than the masterful original from "Leftoverture"
I am a big fan as well and Walsh has just lost the range that he once had and its so sad that he can not recreate what he once was able to do!!! look at Robert Plant too and Tony Bennett as well.
Don't get me wrong. Nobody, and I mean nobody is a bigger fan than I. Since 74'. 25 concerts. I'm even in a Kansas trib band. However, Walsh simply has the inability to just sing a song without having to modify the phrasing, melody, and fucking it up. Very annoying.
Come down man! When you get the chance to play that stuff for over 35 years it's normal to improvise in your live shows. If a band always plays their songs exactly like on the CD both, band and audience, would get bored very soon. And don't call Steve a loser, he's a damn legend!!
I just saw Kansas live today at Düsseldorf / Germany - they were brilliant ... The voice of Steve - brilliant as well ... I`ve seen them a few years ago at Cologne - the voice of Steve was not as good as today, maybe he was ill ... But I agree - he is a damn legend :) Sorry for my bad English ...
Cool, I was at the show in Saarbrücken this wednesday and they were awesome! By the way, your Englisch isn't so bad. Aber von mir aus können wir auch deutsch reden xD
So sad... Steve was taking drugs on those days, wasn't he? It's a little depressing to see him like that... Completely out of his mind... Thank God he has mostly recovered from this over the last years, but he still isn't as before. But he's still a great singer, piano player and songwriter!
Well, as you can tell Walsh is obviously f'd up. No matter though...the memory of what he was imbues the tragedy of what he has become. The beauty lives on either way...
Wow, David Ragsdale is gorgeous! Talented and gorgeous are a good combo! Rich gets down on the guitar. Steve is all over the place! Iike it! It would be so cool to see them in the fall in the O.C. Fair. These guys can really rock on!
Steve himself has now recognized that those were bad times for him(and I can tell now): drugs, worst voice by that and more..., but he found his personal way to return to what he really is (just listen to him in the whole 2002 DVD), I repeat.. He's out of this world, and of course; "KANSAS" as well.
great video, they sound great, just wish Steve sounded as good as the original cd recordings, guess maybe he sings so much his voice is worn out, but still they are and always will be one of the most awesome bands from that time period
Two band members still playing- Rich Williams(guitar) & Steve Walsh(vocals) have really changed over the years. Walsh looks like he's been thru drug rehab- he used to be athletic & muscular, performing acrobatics on stage. Williams has just put on weight- but they still rock!
Normfromal turned me on to the latest dvd called "there's no place like home" You sooooo need to get this concert dvd. The group all look better than they have in 10-15 years. I'm curious as to what all he was on here. He was showing the obvious signs of cocaine use but what else and when did he start doing drugs
weirdguy75 1 year ago
I think it was just cocaine.
I don't know when Steve started with drugs, but Rickyon (youtube user) said that his use was "recreational" during the 70s, and it got worse during the Streets Era.
Steve has been clean since 1997.
Gregsynthbootlegs 1 year ago
steve might have been on drugs at the time but it just sounds like he blew his voice that night. and was having problems singing high so he took a artsy take on it

I saw Kansas on this tour in a club and they were absolutely smokin'. Walsh put on a vigerous, highly visual show. The rest of the band turned in a great performance on every track they did that night. I saw them once before this when Steve Morse was playing with them and two times after this but it was this show that always stands out to me.
einaroneeye 1 year ago

AB21893 1 year ago
@AB21893 Umm..he says in later years he was all kinds of messsed up on drugs & booze as well as very depressed that his own projects had been ignored by marketers and music promotions....his life is awonerful, hideous journey...seems like he has finally found a small measure of peace with his family & new wife...but is still haunted by grapples with sobriety.

KANSASuuuuROCK 1 year ago
Steve is about 41 here & in the throes of a mid-life crisis...lots of drugs. Per interviews, he supposedly is now clean/sober & has another wife (over 10 years ago)& young kids, so is staying clean. He plays with Kansas to pay the bills. Peroid. Once he became famous, he went to hell in a handbasket:tons of plastic surgery, dental implants, drugs. So talented, so tortured.
debbiechickie5 1 year ago 10
one of the best voices in rock history, imho..
thesantoshow93 1 year ago
@debbiechickie5 I have been a major Kansas fan since the beginning. You just don't find musicianship/songwriting like that every day. I saw them about 4 years ago. The concert was amazing, I couldn't stop thinking about it for days. Steve had one of the guitarists covering his really high notes, but other than that, he sounded fantastic. I'm ashamed at how people are picking him apart here. Walk a mile in his shoes.
SistahKepi 1 year ago
The '2 for the Show' live album reflects some of the band's beautiful and complex arrangements and Walsh was awesome there and thriughout their era. Steve is not the same here, sadly in a way. I hope he has realised that and changed to his brilliant self. When was the concert held ? How is he now ? Legendary Kansas from those days nevertheless. Special and unique category in the musical hall of fame for them !

Steve's eyes from :15-:20 are so Richard Pryor-ish,unfocusing & drugged out. god...
debbiechickie5 2 years ago
Yeah sounds like he really beat the shit out of his voice. I love this tune, but with his voice in that shape he really can't carry the melody very well. I've heard more recent stuff from them that sounds a lot better, but it still sounds like he's done some permanent damage to his voice.
wenglish1968 2 years ago
Steve had throat surgery done in the mid 90s and his nasal nerve linings are damaged due to his coke use (producing the nasally sound still today). He still sounds great--MUCH better than this video!

I think this song SHOULD be sung by a soared voice because it reflects the pain much better...so I go on the record and say that I like this version even better than the masterful original from "Leftoverture"
kanemura93 2 years ago
I saw Kansas a few times in the 70s. Steve Walsh was definitely the show man of the group. He can really sing!
tedreale 2 years ago
I am a big fan as well and Walsh has just lost the range that he once had and its so sad that he can not recreate what he once was able to do!!! look at Robert Plant too and Tony Bennett as well.
wlswbbm 2 years ago
Don't get me wrong. Nobody, and I mean nobody is a bigger fan than I. Since 74'. 25 concerts. I'm even in a Kansas trib band. However, Walsh simply has the inability to just sing a song without having to modify the phrasing, melody, and fucking it up. Very annoying.
Launerfilms 2 years ago
I was there. What a fucking joke! Why can't he sing the fucking song like the record? Only he can rape the song that HE originally sang! LOSER!!!
Launerfilms 2 years ago
Come down man! When you get the chance to play that stuff for over 35 years it's normal to improvise in your live shows. If a band always plays their songs exactly like on the CD both, band and audience, would get bored very soon. And don't call Steve a loser, he's a damn legend!!
Kansasforlife 2 years ago 2
I just saw Kansas live today at Düsseldorf / Germany - they were brilliant ... The voice of Steve - brilliant as well ... I`ve seen them a few years ago at Cologne - the voice of Steve was not as good as today, maybe he was ill ... But I agree - he is a damn legend :) Sorry for my bad English ...

So sad... Steve was taking drugs on those days, wasn't he? It's a little depressing to see him like that... Completely out of his mind... Thank God he has mostly recovered from this over the last years, but he still isn't as before. But he's still a great singer, piano player and songwriter!
famousvim26 2 years ago 9
I totally agree he's a great instrumentalist. If I buy any of their CD/s I'll go for the older 70's where his voice is so clear and pristeen!!!

holy shit! Steve is warped out of his brain....it's really really sad to see this. He was a great singer and part of a great band for so many years.

I have to agree. Was the mid 90's? Still, despite his craziness, the band prevails.

Well, as you can tell Walsh is obviously f'd up. No matter though...the memory of what he was imbues the tragedy of what he has become. The beauty lives on either way...
