Definitely maple, man, big sized, if you want long sounded. If you have big drums - don't muffle them anyway and you'll have the effect.

mahogany and bubinga are also very warm sounding. they should give you a deeper sound

There are many really good drum set makers. Some of the guys here are Yamaha fans, some are DW fans, and some are Pearl fans. When you get into the pro level of sets, it becomes more about personal preference.
