  • What a complete and utter dumbfuck you are! You have no idea of the meaning of the word Avant-Garde!!!

  • hey could you tell me the games right before and after the video of tidus opening his eye at like 1:05

  • The one immediately before is from the opening of Guilty Gear X-2, from Arc System Works.

The one immediately after is Devil May Cry 3, from Capcom. Hope you enjoy!

  • awesome thanks

  • very interesting! The one critique I would make is that the essay seems to focused on defining video games as art only under the premise of how they resemble movies, tell stories, or draw the user into the world.. But if you think more deeply about art you may realize that the comparison should run deeper.. Especially with title like "avant garde, what about avant garde video games? Or impressionist games, minimilast, cubist, expressionist..is there a sublime aesthetic to video game art?.etc..

  • To be perfectly honest, I didn't get to cover nearly as much as I wanted, so I more or less got stuck in games as narrative device. It focused the message, but if there's anything I would advise to anyone watching it, it's to do your own further research into games of all kinds. You will find worlds of possibility for art from all angles.

Thanks for the comment! I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought it could have done so much more.

  • I recognize how much art is evolved in the making or even in the results of video games,

Most video games are all about killing the art of killing.. think of how many art movies are not seen as art expression but as entertainment. And most people get badly intimidated in front of something beautiful, people don't know how to deal with beauty or unusual beauty.

At the same time there's another lot of people out there thirsty for beauty and also for crazy shit.

  • I don't think that it has anything to do with Avant Gard....

  • The interpretation of Avant-Garde I took is "ahead of the times." As it is right now, video games are not taken very seriously as an art form. I wanted to show some of the potential it has to be so, and some examples out there that actually already qualify.

  • No, your stupid silly videogames (as they are now, they will become superior) ARE NOT ahead of their times. You really want to learn something new? Ask me if I will converse with you, then we'll see!

  • Excellent interpretation and great narration of movies V's games.

I think you should get together with....digitalblue2u on youtube - he is using something called internal visual surrounds which

presents the videos in a very interesting way!

  • I'll take that into consideration. Thanks!

  • he is right int the part that making a movie in a vido game is rong but vice versa is good i idea

  • It really depends, actually. Narrative and interactive media can coexist peacefully in the same product. It could be a matter of personal taste, but I find that both can work together to make something amazing, as it has in Metal Gear Solid 3.

  • As for making game-based movies, that also depends on who's doing it. Get some hack like Uwe Boll at the helm, and it's probably going to be a crap sandwich. Get someone who actually respects the subject matter and also knows how to make a good movie, and it'll be just magic.

  • thats pretty cool i always wanted to go to nyaf. whats it like there? its a go away college right?

  • It was pretty cool. No room or board (unless you're close enough to commute, you'll need to get an apartment there), but the classes are top-notch. Just be warned - film schools and art courses of any kind can attract pretentious snobs.

The best part, though? Some days, an organic and local foods market is open in Union Square, right across from the Academy. BEST place to get lunch or groceries ever, and on a cold day, the hot apple cider you can get there will be your best friend ever.

  • Haha Im so turned on to go there now. Do you write poetry and advertisements or something? Man, you're good.

I want to be a film director. Do they have really good programs in that, or is it geared towards television?

  • I used to write poetry, but that was a while back. I guess I wouldn't mind shaking up the advertising world if I got the opportunity, but actually, video game design is what I really wanna get into.

As for NYFA's courses, it's geared for all kinds of film work, be it TV, movie, ad, or whatever else. Oh, and if you ever run into the teacher for film direction (Bryan Norton), call him "B-R-Y-M-L-X-Q-thenumber7-theletterT Notron," then tell him I said hi. He should know what it means.

  • Unfortuanetly... Video-games will never be accepted as an art-form...

  • That's what they said about Rock & Roll

  • True!

    ^^~

  • Fascinating.

Personally, I never thought of video games as an art form until I recently, when re-discovered Earthbound. Ever play?

  • Nope, though I do have a friend who is a big fan of the game. I hear it's amazing, though.

  • That was a really immersive game I played as a kid. Sad they arent really doing anymore

  • Might be just a matter of time. Considering the publicity Fire Emblem got after Super Smash Brothers Melee got released, maybe the same'll happen for Mother/Earthbound.

  • Thanks for giving us an overview of the video game industry and its potential as tne new art form of our generation! A lot of people ignore this media as a new platform for launching a storyline or idea.

  • well said.
