i have had the honor of meeting John in many different settings, 1st doing sod at his house (70's summer job) where he came out at lunch and played for the crew, even met "Teddie" his dog. fast forward to the mid 80's @ zales where i was working to buy a present for his daughter then in the 90's had the priviledge to build stage for his shows here in Denver. Each time he has been such a kind, gracious man and it certainly shows in this performances. My deepest Thanks to Mediahound, a friend!
When this came out I was 12 and had a old man that would dance for us as we sung this song, (for 25 cents )Now I relize he was most likely homeless.I think of him everytime I hear this song.
Okay I know becuz I was there BUT there was a real version that was quite long. It's intro had Bojangles clear his throat hem haw'in around took up a beat with his dog and said one two three harmonica came in and THEN went into the NGDB. No can find! I would say around 1970.
@cavemaster100 Remember the dogs name? "Sing, Teddy". I remember hearing this the night my grandfather died. This song, and My Sweet Lord were both big at the time, and it was 1971. Both songs still make me well-up if I hear them at night.

I heard them play this live yesterday at the Orange Blosson Opry in Weirsdale, FL. This is their 45th year together. Still a great band!

This is a pretty fair rendition on a nice night. Unusual to see a drummer playing harp.
