Hi, that was really good recipe..^_^ , bt i hv one que. i brought heavy cream n i only used it in this recipe ..so can u tell me where else i can use this heavy cream...i know it is little odd que...:)
Thanks for the great recipe! I did not soak the dal the night before; just pressure cooked it. You don't need the addition of butter as it is perfectly palatable without it.
After making this, i store the leftovers in a covered bowl in the refrigerator, but when i recook it the next day, it doesn't taste nearly as good. When i order Dal Maharani from a restaurant, it is still absolutely delicious when re-heated the next day. What am i doing wrong? Is there anything i can do?
@8Libertine8 : Dal Makhani is a dish that us usually served the next day - the flavors heighten over time. The only thing I can think of is that maybe your dry spices are not bold enough or maybe old...or try adding extra onions, tomatoes, ginger and garlic.
Ahh, dal makhani. There's something about Punjabi dishes like this one that really hit the spot (it must be the richness!). This recipe is quite a bit different from other ones that I've seen but it turned out quite nice. Thanks for posting.
This is totally Unauthentic dal makhni recipe, probabbly one of the worst take on daal makhni I have ever seen. The ingredients that DO NOT go in are the tomatoes and onions ... and where is the desi ghee and butter?? remember it is called daal makhni and not "daal payaza tamatar le creme".
Great recipe. Your channel is very helpful to me. I am a swiss married to an Indian and its phantastic for me to get all this cooking ideas. Thanks a lot.
Urad Daal (Black Gram Dal) is a little bigger and not the same as Beluga. WE have never tried Beluga so really can't comment...make a small batch, it may end up being the best recipe ever.
You cannot make cream, but you can make butter from cream. Cream is available in the grocery store. The texture of the dish will be a little greasy if you use butter and creamy if you use cream. The daal needs to be washed and soaked in water overnight. Then, you place it in the cooker.
how can u call original version unhealthy....though its high in fat it has good amount of protein and fiber... fyi high in fat doesn't mean unhealthy...dumb goat
Any daal can be cooked without a pressure cooker, but it takes considerably longer. Just cook it in a heavy bottom pan and be sure to keep an eye on it and keep adding a little water at a time until it's tender. You can also use a crock pot or slow cooker.
Okay thanks, I'm guessing it would be on really low heat---would i keep it covered? Would I need to stir it often? Also, around how long would it take, if i do it w/o pressure cooker? Thank you :)
You can cook on medium low heat and covered. You definitely have to keep stirring often and also keep adding additional liquid (water, stock, etc) as needed. It would take a couple of hours, but you'd have to keep checking the tenderness of the daal and take it from there.
lol Dunno.. Dis Ques myt soun stupid... But i realy wana noe... 1 cup whole urad dal = hw mch Xactly?? .. grams ?? lykwise 1/4th cup kidney beans ? :( Myt soun dumb bt wana be perfec wen i try t out 4 de 1st tym :)
No question is ever "dumb". It's better to ask. Not everyone has a weighing scale at home so we give our measurements in volume. In the US, a cup is a standard unit of measure. You could use your standard tea cup for this recipe.
as usual awesome recipe..seeing it makes my mouth watery..can u plz advise if i can put milk instead of whipped cream like u sgsted in palak paneer?or any other subsitute as i guess milk wont go with yogurt?plz advise.
There is nothing wrong with mixing milk and yogurt. In fact, heavy whipping cream is also a milk product. Since you are looking for something to make the daal creamy, you could substitute Evaporated Milk instead of heavy whipping cream.
hi ladies, great job with all your recipes - but this one makes your mouth water just watching it! kindly advise how i would go about cooking this recipe in the slow cooker...im a mom of 3 very young kids and i can use all the help from the slow cooker!! thx in advance :)
please TAG your videos more and more so it is easy to find you guys for a new user. i too had no idea you guys have a channel untill i RESEARCHED. just keep more tags and u ll find more views on your videos...
We try to tag as much as possible. Just wondering... were you searching for Indian food or something else? Maybe you can help us by letting us know some relevant tags.
sure, it would be my pleasure to assist you guys...
> always remember to tag for the words which have same meaning in different languages , ex : urad becomes udad or specially gujarati people call it adad, so tagging like this helps... gujjus find problem searching for hindi words so tagging in for gujju words are very important
and interesing fact is that your biggest customers are gujaratis when it comes to veggie part, so take care of them and tag more.. here are few ones u should take care: dal, daal, mug (moong), roti, rotli, urad, udad, adad, varan, varaan, etc
remember you have strong competetors like wah chef and manjula's kitchen, so u also need to pace up to compete, u have fast fan calling compared to others which is good, best of luck, i ll keep posting tags everyday , just have a look at it...take care
god ! i had to stop the video! these girls made me water my mouth !!! now where will i find indian food from, i dont even have an indian grocery store where i live. :( i miss my mom...
You are right, daals are very healthy. However, since many recipes call for heavy cream (especially with Daal Makhani), a healthy daal inadvertently becomes loaded with fat and calories.
You can try tempering the yogurt before adding it in. To do this, add a small amount of the hot liquid or gravy into your yogurt and mix. Then add a little more and mix. You are trying to gradually raise the temp of the yogurt instead of all at once. Finally, you can add the yogurt back into the pot.
Very nice video. I do have a question on mixing in yogurt. When I add yogurt, it ends up curdling and sometimes, I just have to throw it away. Do you have some tips to avoid this?
A restaurant in my town serves what they call Maah Dal. It's black beans, with a cream sauce and ground lamb (I think). It seems to have maybe cardamom in it too? The only texture is the beans and the meat. Otherwise it's smooth with the cream and possibly yogurt too. This looks like it's very similar. Is it? Or is Maah Dal something different? Thanks!

Can I use split urud daal if whole isn't available? And does that apply to all daal recipes?
1slamicLife 8 months ago
@1slamicLife : You can, but the split Urad Daal cooks faster than the whole, so pl. keep that in mind.

Thanks for the great recipe.
For a tender, soft dal people normally mash the daal after cooking it well. You have not mashed it. Will it not affect the taste ?
irfand4 2 years ago
We like a little bit of texture, but you can mash it if you like.
