  • @nicosen77 its a bit hard to work out what your saying as your english isn't to good. :). So here goes. Just believe me changing the power cable works. You can change anything and every thing in a technics even down to the resistors and capacitors. The power supply can also be changed. Basically its up to you how far you go in modifying it. I hope that answers your questions?

  • whats the name of the from mr eon?

  • sounds like a stupid question but what is a ground wire for ?

  • 1 of my 1200s is still humming after the groung mod what could make this happen???? PLEASE HELP!

  • @GEE3100 It's hard to say without seeing it but it's possible that it's a cold solder (bad soldering job) you should check out some soldering vid and then review your work. hope this helps you, and thanks for using my vid.

  • I am thinking of doing this mod to my 1210's. What's the best cable to replace the original with? I've never had a problem with buzzing from them but I'm getting a better mixer and would like to get the most from it's sound quality. I use Serato also. Any advice?

  • @djteknovibe Yet I can always pick the recording that has been done with expensive leads in a double blind test.... Also, what has accoustic material got to do with cable characteristics ? Isnt that to smooth out the rooms response and negate room accoustics/reverb ? So you used 99p phonos in your studio ? I agree most exotic cables r 'snake oil', but you are saying a £50 cable with superior copper, shielding, etc is just the same as a cheapo ? BTW I too know a thing or two about studio tech.

  • @fatshoolaces lol...never get into discussions about cables with a sound engineer!!!!!!...lol..they are just big headed cunts to talk to about hi-fi.....lol...YES RCA cables do make a massive difference also changing the power cable also makes a massive difference....I also know a thing or two!....lol..

  • @DjCantFuckinMIx THANK YOU ! - COMMON SENSE !!

How can people say cables dont make a difference, but then buy the best equipment, made with the best copper & wound components, etc..-

Obviously, expensive stuff sounds better due to IMPROVED CABLE and COMPONENTS.. Duhhh !

As for power cable, the best bang for my buck purchase ever was a £80 mains conditioner - no more pops, hum, etc. Better soundstage.. Just a few capacitors/coils and HI-GRADE CABLE !!

Btw - Nice name ! rofl..

  • @fatshoolaces its always sound engineers that argue the fact that cables make no difference!..lol..utter wankers..lol..I'm sort of in the hi-fi industry and I know alot of people plus I live in Cambridge the mecca of hi-fi

  • Changing the power cable do not has sense. What about the electrical instalation ? Does it also need to be changed ? Sure it has poorer quality than a standar power cable.

  • @djteknovibe If u got top quality amp/speakers you CAN tell the difference between different phono cables. The difference between a standard cable and, say, a £60 cable is clearly noticeable on my set... It is subtle but I definitely get better stereo seperation and bass is more solid. As you pay more n more for cables, the improvements in sound become more miniscule. The first jump up the scale is usually most noticeable tho....

I agree - New stylus first, but cables DO make a difference.

  • @djteknovibe well if that would be a better tut then why not make it instead of moaning and talking shit?

  • So let me get this right, all you did for the ground wire mod was clip the original one that sticks out of the deck off, then solder it back to a point on the PCB?

  • @MrMikkiFunk yep

  • @russtafari Thanks man, did it all good in the end :) Posted a little video response ;)

  • you !! tracklist pleaase ! that songs its a pure dope. word!

  • @cefo0251 at the end ill give you a link for this mix at the end of the weekend

  • do u do vestax mods ?

  • Thanks for this Russ, pretty dope. I got the gist of what you did, but I wish the vid was a lil' clearer.

Im thinking of doing the same for the ground wire. I modded my 12's as well but I used shorter female RCA's instead so they dont dangle at all. All I do is connect another regular male RCA cable in between. Works great for transport since it is so short, it really cant get pulled. I have 6 more 12's in my collection to do so maybe I'll try and post a video for that as well.

    Great job dude!

  • so does this loopin of the earth work for 1210's ???

  • Can I use shielded rca cables like the ones used in car audio?

  • @muziknut23 i don't really see why you wouldnt be able to use shielded cables but you will still need to mod the cables first, so they will need to have the end bits that unscrew. check the vid in the description for more info on that.

  • @russtafari cool or i can cut the ends off. I changed my cables before now its time to upgrade them and make them a lil longer.

  • thnks i've always hated that wire and grounding it. You're very clear and following your direction was to quick!!!Kool a female dj!!!

  • i didnt catch what you did with the ground cable?

  • well, heres the commment missing, do you have a link to get that mix?

    all tracks are bangers!

  • Thanks kid! This vid helped out alot. My mixer phono lines were acting up. Thanks again, one love! Keep Turntablism alive!

  • thanks for the yid just did my decks

  • hey russ!

after watching your vid about 20 times i had a go and just wanted to say THANK YOU!!

I kept snapping my ground wire on one 1200 and it was really starting get on my tits!!

I didnt even realise you were able to solder it to the earth in the rca until i saw your vid

    FAIR PLAY!!

  • @DjMikeBushnell nice! iam glad it worked out for you.

  • So you basically replaced the RCA (stock) to another RCA. As far as sound quality, you may use Monster Cables RCA but the result is minimal.

  • @FUNKYOLOGK it may be minimal but.... you would be eliminating the ground/earth wire and you would have stronger cable on your 12 with a casing that you can unscrew and get to the inside unlike the RCA(stock) also the replacement cable is a thicker cable

  • Comment removed

  • Comment removed

  • @russtafari Replacing rca with another rca cable although thicker is not significant. Cartain mixers now come with an XLR connection which is great. Perhaps you can make a video on how to upgrade an rca to an XLR. Not bashing on your ablities at all and I do apologize for my tone for it maybe be taken the wrong way. I give you credit though for your instructionals and especially your ground/earth technique--pretty good! Also, you do seem to know what your doing with the internal components.

  • @FUNKYOLOGY Certain*

  • @FUNKYOLOGY thanks for the comments, i would love to do a video on changing it to an XLR but none of my mixers have XLR for the lines so it would be kinda useless for me

  • My ground cable got cut off, can anyone help me? with a tutorial maybe?!

  • @SUPRRREMEkid this one should sort it out for you, but it would remove the cable completely

  • great video . why did u not start talking again . instead u killed us with the dumb music .

  • i would love to try this !!!!

what are the benifits everybody showing how but nobody saying why ???

any help be cool thanks x

  • @TheFreemanuk the point of the mod is to upgrade the cables from the shitty ones that come on your turntables. and to eliminate flimsy ground/earth wire that tends to get broken off over time and travel, thus shortening you set up time.

  • This post helped me upgrade my cables on my 1200 mk2. I've done it in the past but needed a refresher. I needs ta replace the pop-up light and maybe mod the LEDS to blue. Peace to all real DJ's. I'm tired of the wanna-be's calling themselves DJ's and don't scratch or even rock doubles. Extra special shots out to the European & Asian DJ's that seem to take the art of DJing more seriously than us over here in the United Snakes. DJ Doctor C out!

  • I really wish I could begin watching complete films and tv shows at youtube, however it is honestly too bad that is never likely to happen. #VIDEOPOSTERID#, that's precisely why I am using |stream episodes [dot] net| currently to be able to watch the tv shows and movies and youtube for every thing else!

MOD#002 Phono Cable and Ground Wire Mod for Technics SL-1200

  • Okay where did you solder the ground ? i see you de-soldered the RCAs but it looks like the ground was soldered near the RCAs. maybe an HD pic would help better.

  • For those hating on this, you have to smarten up. I've had my tables like this for over 8 years. NEVER had an issue. I've owned the original final scratch, serato, the audio 8 dj with traktor scratch, and currently the Xone 4D mixer, and have NEVER had an issue. I've used my tables at many gigs and clubs over the years and have NEVER had an issue. PERIOD.

  • I've been wanting to do this for a long time and thanks to your tutorial, I now know it's fairly straight forward.

    Thanks!!

  • Russtafari - thanks for the vid. I have a few additions for anyone attempting this.

I performed this on my SL-1200s because my phono outs were broken and caused a loud buzzing if the cables were not just so.

  • 1) I used Monster Cable car audio amp connections (both pairs single sleeve, RFI shielded, rubber and flexible cables, etc.) I clipped one end off (the end opposite the signal arrow sticker on he cable)

    2) I did not twist the positive (red or blue) and negative (black) cable leads together. I used the internal cable ground(s) (black sleeved cable(s) in the jacket) as the ground(s) on the printed circuit board. It works perfectly.. in fact its better by far than the original cabling.

  • does anyone know if grounded tables works okay with traktor scratch?

  • Hey Delta9mm, tell me u don't ground ur set? Cuz when the time comes and the power goes out, then there goes ur equipment. If u are so rightous, then y did't u mention to use a soundcard for my means of grounding equipment?

  • I am trying to find a vid, on how to ground Pioneer cdj-400 and my mixer. For some reason there are no vids on how to do so. Do I ground both the table and mixer? ........and how do I ground them? Can u post a video on that, or can u refer me to somewhere in Youtube that knows exactly how to do all I mentioned. Thanks.

  • Ground a CDJ ???? WTF!!

  • You don't ground a CDJ.

  • Yo, this video is for TRUE turntablist ONLY. For the ones who don't care about opening them up and experimenting all int he name of hiphop. This dude did it, and did it well. Thank you for this vid. I have now successfully moded over 15 tables for friends and to the date, no problems. Boooyaaakkaassha!!!

  • Thanks for the big up homie! iam happy you enjoyed the tut. hey with over 15 tables under your belt you should put up a tut of your own. you might touch on something i didnt.

  • @djcrumbz in the name of hip hop? i hate hip hop not everyone that is a good dj mixes hip hop.

  • @d2dak87 Just remember mixing came from Hip Hop !!!!!

  • @MrBigs72 - actually disco ;)

  • Who is the artist playing in the background music...?

  • Thanks for your help.

  • Cool, Did you use BALANCED or UN BALANCED CABLES?

  • yes u must

  • nice video

  • I also think it would be a good idea to mention in your tut that by doing this, you invalidate ANY warrenty/guarentee on the deck/s. SO if you've just bought your decks, wait a year before you do this and if it ain't broke then DON'T fix it. Appart from that, please refer to my post below

  • yeah id only do it with a very old tt like my jvc

  • my personal choice is Vann Damme OFC type cable, I attach my own neutric plugs

  • Great idea to upgrade the supplied RCA cables BUT... REALLY DUMB to remove the earth. You are making the decks electronically unsafe and hazerdous. By connection of the earth to the RCA leads, the Earth is not going to Earth and you have potentially made your whole rig "live". Yhe braided bit on the rec cables ARE NOT for earthing!!! they are for screening. Also If you gig and you get PAT tested, your decks will fail with this particular mod, thus leaving you unable to play that gig.

  • Total Lie

  • By all means have an oppinion lumbjohn, but false statements and accusations I have not time for. I been in the audio install and repair field for a heck of a long time. Parties for your mate or a session on pirate radio won't require PAT tests, official venues as part of the insurance and H&S guide, will require it. That asside, you've removed the earthed/ground cable. It's not ther for decoration or because they had "a bit left over".

  • Isnt he talking about the tonearm ground (which is there to eliminate noise) NOT the electrical input ground, The tonearm and cartridge are not connected to the power in any way? Didn't you say you were in the install and repair business?

Fot your information most of the turntables I have seen don't even have an input ground because they are double insulated.

  • Great Vid!! thanks it works great, and I thought it was going to create a ground loop. However in the Vid you tied the ground wire to the center conductor. Why.

  • man that first song is so smooth... what's the name of it?

  • the first one :)

  • yes i brotha'! excellent video! give thanks! never heard of ground eliminating! how come they are not made like that?

  • because its really not that great of an idea , especially if you just have one turntable going straight into a phono stage or a receiver , you will have created a problem for yourself . Best to just leave the ground wire be

  • Try telling lumbjoh haha.

  • Awesome vid.. its the only one thats very clear on what to do. thanks. more people should really see this. do you think you could do a vid on how this mod works with serato when scratching?

    great original hip-hop tracks btw

  • Well done!

  • nice handy video and mix soundbed russtafari!! can you plz tell me the name of the high and mighty tune playing from 5:20?? nuff props... 1ne

  • hey russtafari,

couldju please tell me the name of the first song, or the artist? its been in my head since i "fixed" my decks, the tutorial was sweeet. something about a knapsack, with grand puba-360 degrees sample in the chorus?

  • I hassled russtafari about a year ago with the same question,

    It's pack Fm, backpack

  • Thank you.

  • I'm intimidated by this. It's a great video. If I had experience with soldering I might try it but even though it looks easy somehow I always end up f**king something up.

  • I used this tutorial as a guide to replace my old rca cables and while I was at it I also used the internal ground mod. Though I had some small issues along the way... it worked out great and I am listening to Tribe's "elecric relaxation" on the table right now! Thanks for the info... saved me some money for more vinyl!

  • Thanks Man! Monday I'm picking up a 1210MK5G with O.F.C. wiring for audiophile use. These TT's are SO UNDERRATED for that!! I'll be putting on an external power supply, so now I won't be as afraid to pull it apart. The Japanese have made some SUPERB high end TT's in the past, but they pretty much got out of it. :(

May I suggest? You might want to try a lower power iron. I'm afraid you might fry something on the other side of the circuit board with that one.

  • Great tutorial u did there, i really enjoyed watchin it

could u tell me the name of song that starts at 2:50 ?

the first one is backpack isn't it?

  • J-Live - All In Together Now from the album 'All Of The Above'

  • i noticed that there are two different type of rca wire boards that came on the sl1200's this one and the other is definetly different looking. it must be from the older 1200's

  • thank you so much for making this video. i'm trying to put new monster thx audio RCAs on my 1200 at the moment and having problems with the sodering part especially... i'm glad to be able to watch this and see what i should be doing. many thanks!

  • First tin the cables, then when soldering, heat what you want to attach to and then attach your tinned cable/s

  • Second off, I don't get why you're twisting the red and black wires of the new cable together, and using the third thin wire for the ground. (I'm guessing the third wire was only ever meant to physically strengthen the cable, not conduct signals) Ideally, you should use the red and black wires instead. You could however use the third wire for external ground to bring it closer to the amp, so you don't have a long ground wire hanging about.

  • You should check his video "mod#001 - Preparing cables for mod#002" and you would understand it all. Also this mod is old as whut and been used in SL's for years. Yeah in some case (depending mostly on your mixer) there is a small possibility for having some signal problems, but haven't heard yet of anyone really having those problems.

  • Hmm, first off it's a bad idea to connect the ground wire to the audio cable ground. The extra ground wire is there for a reason. There's a small potential difference between the both ends of the cable because of the resistance. Sure, the resistance is tiny, but so is the signal picked up from the needle. Thus even the ground wire of the RCA cable should both be treated as part of the signal path. Connecting it to the ext ground might add hum or otherwise degrade the signal.

  • man I FUCKED the board up DAMN i suck at soldering what doi do know how can iremove the whole arm to send this shit out for repair or where can i by a new board?

  • Google "Technics RCA Terminal Board"

  • Yep soldering is a pain in the ass. All depends on the equipment and patiency

    Practice improves :)

  • yep dont do this if you plan on using final scratch or serato

  • also if you were listening closer i didnt say anything about it working fine with final scratch because i have never tested with it. but i can assure you if you have done the job right serato is fine. i think you should check your work. keep me posted, good luck.

  • Confirmed, both the RCA change and internal ground will not affect Serato use. However, with Final Scratch, it's a different story. We've seen them affect in some instances, and not in others. Don't know the reason. We internally ground, but do not remove the actual ground cable. This way you can decide to use it, or not.

  • Beware:

it messes up final scratch 2 i'm pretty sure. the deck i did it to won't calibrate, and when you take the needle off of the record it doesn't skip ahead in the track; it doesn't recognize the needle is lifted. I'm pretty sure the ground being sent into the tonearm messes with the frequency and screws it up. I can work around it but I think i have to re wire it in the future.

  • Stay away from Monster, especially if your using Serator. The quality isn't all that. All marketing. Look for Mogami or similar brands. In addition, internal grounding isn't always recommended. Depends on your specific situation. I know in areas outside the U.S. you'll have issues when you internally ground. I would say, do the internal ground, but keep the ground cable attached, and ready to use - just in case. Just coil it up and keep it out of the way till you need - if you ever need.

  • Sorry, meant SERATO.

  • monster is a hell of a lot better then the stock cables that come on your 12 and as for the issue of doing the ground mod on 12's from out side of north America you may be right but i now live in south korea and ive have done this mod on 3 sets of 12's here with no problem, but you can never be too safe i guess. oh as for the serato issue it works fine with both the SL1 and the ttm57sl i have both, most dj's i have done this for use serato and no problems. thanks for the input bro.

  • Agreed, monster is much better than the stock RCA cables. We've used Monster brand at various customer's request, then a few months down the line, they are back at the shop with problems. Not all the time, but more than we'd like to see. Which is why we don't recommend them anymore. Look for Mogami cables, same price, 100% better quality.

  • What model Mogami do you use? Just their standard Stereo RCA cables?

  • 3600 Series is the lowest we'll go. Cost is about $2-3/ft. Of course, you could use any series - they are all good.

  • what kind of monster cables did you use? im going to get a friend experienced in soldering, and id like to get monsters

  • yaay!!! no problems with serato...good to hear! thanks man! in the furture, i'll be using serato instead of djDecks

  • Thanks dude, just fixed a buzzing deck, awesome.

  • Russtafari, very good tutorial. I need to change mine and your video will come in handy. Thanks!

  • maaaan - I wrote to russta but he didn't responde - i cant believe that not a single person knows the 1st tune on the video

    ;(

  • sorry bro life has been crazy for me i just moved to the other side of the world and been well busy but the song you are looking for is BackPACK by Pack FM

  • Someone tell me what the name of the rapper on the 1st beat is

  • someone must know the name of the first tune on this video? any clues of the artist?

    help me out please

  • What is the first tune on this video?

    please help me out.

  • Awesome tutorial man. You make it look easy to this mod. I felt really comfortable doing it even though I've never soldered anything before.

  • thanks alot bro

  • Bro it totally worked!!! Thanks for the help!I just did it today!

  • i can-up on a SL-1810 and i wanted to know if the headsheld is the same as an SL-1200 i haven't tried it out yet so i dont know if the rca cables r working but if anything you think i can replace them wit the steps in this video clip??

  • What track is this

  • its a mix i did a couple of years ago

  • ARE YOU KIDDING, MAN?!

this method may cause the malfunction if the chassis of deck becomes in any voltage - from any device or wire connected to chassis.

of course, in 98% of cases it will work

but in another 2% the grounding rumble is added to signal of one cartridge channel!

  • Am having a problem with my technics which i would describe as grounding rumble, see you have mentioned this before, what would cause this and how could the problem be resolved?

    thx ross

  • Will this also work with an MK5?

  • yes the board might look a little different but the conections are the same

  • mmmmmm. i tryed this on my sl 1210mk2 im getting no sound now :( maybe i fryed the little circuit board but it looks different to the circuit board on the video ????? do i have to solder the wires to different places on my board?

  • no both boards are very alike. but wat you should do is check out my other vid called MOD#001 and that should sort you out mate, if it dosent get at me.

    EZ star

    Russtafari

  • Next time please don't cover up your verbal tutorial with rap music.

  • vaya mierda de plato si tienes ke acer todo eso para cambiar un rca....technics i su edad de piedra....

  • Did you really have to show every last second of the work including the frustating part of watching you desolder the wires off? Could'nt you just show the removal of the wires instead of making us watch you desolder for 60 seconds?

  • sorry for wasting 60 seconds of your time how about we call it even for the time you mabe me waste reading your comment...lol other then that i hope the video helped.

  • haha

  • TOUCHE!!! Lol!!!

  • some people don't know how to solder or desolder and want to learn. thanks russtafari for showing everyone step by step.

  • i was confused on how to do it with the monster cables, so im forever greatful to you......and great music!!!!!!! props cuz!!!! u da sheot. is that music your mixtape? if so, hit me up where i can cop that ish.

    peace

    ragz

    jazz addixx

  • yeah its one of my older mixtapes PM me your email and ill up it to you

  • by the way is this ragz of dj boom and ragz?

  • hahahah yeah man, sure is. il hit you up my man!

  • how do it improve the sound

  • this tutoral does not really make the sound better it is the type of thing you might do if you have a bad cable

  • Heyyyy One Rastafari you saved me $150 to get my mark 5's repaired... Peace and luv for posting this up mayunnn!

  • yo russ!

youre realy into that shit, are u an electrician or so??

  • an electrician nope far from it. lol

  • Where did you get your RCA wires from?

  • there monster cables you can pick them up at like "the source" or most electronics stores

  • Hey man, nice vid.

I was wondering if it is possible for you to post a step by step to this (or preferably the mk2 :D), as i got lost when you started twisting wires together.

    Cheers

  • thanks, way a head of you bro. check out my other tut MOD#001 Preparing cables for MOD#002

i hope this helps you out

  • many people want to charge for knowledge but itss cool your showing them for free... i actually did this mod before watching the video and it works great... i grounded both channels however...

again.. very cool making the video...

  • great its good to see people using this tut, hearing your comments is all the pay i need. if your willing to do stuff yourself all knowledge should be free. more tuts to come.

    easy star!

    -The One Russtafari

  • shit i fucked it up. cuz why does my 1200mk2 board look smaller then your mk3 rca board. are all 1200 rca boards the same?

  • ok i am sure i know the problem. and yes in a mk2 the board is smaller but thats not you problem. the problem is you need to do the same thing you did on the end of the cable unscrew the caseing from the plug and unsolder the wires then the twist the 2 main wires together and solder them to the center then solder the 3rd wire to the ground of the plug case. iam make a new tut for you tomorrow dont worrie mate, ill sort you out!

  • bro thanks ill keep my casing off till i see your next video on 1200mk2 tables i'm sure more peope own the 1200mk2 as a classic DJ i was wondering if you new how to D Quartz a 1200 for a smother mix i herd it was just a snip of a wire to get rid of the quartz locking. you will get a smother mix with classics. Thanks DJ Allan S. (new york)

  • Your sound/signal is only as good as the weakest part in the link. Here it's the wire in the arm, you need to re-wire the arm (difficult) then do what you did to hear the rewards. Also crap soldering won't do your sound any favours especially when dealing with such tiny signals from the needle.

May I recommend Cardas internal wire and an output board from KAB USA

  • Very true. Could also be the cart, Faulty headsehell, plus the fact none of thes guys do correct VTA and alignment adjustments. But at the end of the day, these guys ain't gonne be using Grados are they haha

  • That sucked, as did your soldering. Putting new phono cables on there won't make things any better actually it can make them worse by increasing capacitance/resistance due to the thickness of the wire, you have to choose carefully. The main fault with the 1200 is the internal tonearm wiring hence adding this wont make a blind bit of difference.

  • thanks for your input, but attacking me for this tut is like me saying to you "why put up a video of you mixing when there are people out there that mix better then you"?..... because its silly. I never claimed to be an expert at electronics or soldering. Like i said in the tut this is something that worked for me. The difference it made was i have better sound, i no longer have the annoying/ flimsy ground wire and a new cable considering one of my audio cables was shifty, but not anymore,

  • Maybe i should have mentioned that in the tut but oh well, next time. I appricate your comments but all i'm doing here is sharing info and my experiences. do with them wat you will. if you did not like this tut ignore it or make a better one. also the reason i made this tut was because i had not seen a video tut for this online.

  • Thanks russtafari. i have my 1200s all apart now only problem is i'm having anxity attacks about attempting this scary project. i SUCK at soldering cuz. going to church first. Please say a prayer for DJ Al. Peace cuz and thanx for posting

  • no worries, thanks for the reply. if you need help getting through it hit me up on skype my name there is theonerusstafari

    good luck

  • Very nice tutorial man. If I didn't suck so bad at soldering I think I would try it. Maybe I should watch a tut on that first maybe huh? Thanks bro!

  • lol thanks bro, but you cant be much more shit then me at it. give it a try and let me know how it goes.

  • Here we go! Another DJ sharing what he's got. This is what it's all about. Please sir, may I have some more?

  • GOOD JOB!!!, keep the videos comming bro! j
