i think its great that the 70s kiss shows are on dvd/tape. That will live forever so i guess that kiss will live on. Not many bands have more than a handful of great records anyway. Its time to pull the plug ! With all the tribute acts around what does it matter , at least you can watch them cheaper and they still play like their hungry. Eric Carr was a damn good drummer, an integral part of kiss and a very nice guy. The only reason I didn't mention him was cos he wasn't the subject. My beef, if I really have one, is with being told that Kiss as they are now, are as viable a rock band as they were 74-78, when all they do is whore out the old stuff and don't write any new. And my point was that Kiss ARE a caberet Vegas show. It all seems to be done with smoke and mirrors and I prefer a bit more honesty.

It's kind of hard to be the "hottest band in the world" when you postpone a tour because of hip surgery. Gene and Paul (they are NOT KISS) are so fucking lame it's a matter of time before they do viagra commercials. Gene and Paul are in the best COVER band ever and they know it, to call it KISS is a joke.
Considering Gene and Paul are both almost 60 years old, and the band in general has been active for over 35 years, that in itself speaks for itself. Very few bands are still the original lineup, whether change was made by leaving or death, being together and touring for that many years - worldwide - is an achievement. Gene might be out spoken but he's right, cheap skates who don't buy records and choose to steal them by downloading "Hot" music, is putting the record industry out of business.
Perhaps filesharing IS ruining the record business, but Gene Simmons has always claimed that Kiss is about the fans and the music. If that were true then he'd have no problem in recording another album no matter what the "business model". Fact is Gene Simmons is all about the cash. He's obsessed with cash.
Why actually do some work and record new material when you can milk the hell out of the classic stuff and live like a fat wig wearing king? Sadly he seems to have become a parody of himself, reciting the same old tired soundbytes over and over for what has seemingly become the Hottest Tribute Band in the World.
I would have replied sooner, but I was in the hospital for two weeks. KISS from the beginning have been a rock n show band which included a Demon, Starchild, Space Ace, and The Cat. Those 4 positions are still being filled, and the stage show continues to explode. No band to this day has it's original members, at least KISS has it's original theatrical line up... . and they're playing the same music we all love and enjoy. When I first seen KISS I was 16 years old, now I'm 53. Rock on KISS..
Hope your hospital stay wasn't too unpleasant. I disagree with the rock and show bit. From the start they were a band and the sum of their individual parts made them the Kiss we all know and love. As soon as the four way dynamic was messed with that Kiss ceased to be. This is notable from Dynasty onward.
Replacing a band member is not simply a matter of filling out a role, but being an active contibuting member of the band. Robert Trujillo is not playing the part of Cliff Burton in Metallica, he is being himself and as such the two "imposters" in Kiss should not be masquerading as their superior counterparts. When Kiss produce a new album (yes, with Gene Simmons actually playing all his bass parts) then perhaps they can rise above being an elaborate tribute band but until then they remain so.
I do agree that filling a costume doesn't make you the original member, and I wasn't actually trying to imply that. But in KISS's case I can understand why they did. After the original group got back together for the farewell tour, etc, etc, etc, it was clear that two things were taking place.
1.) The band had done it all many times over. They were all nearing retirement age and getting tired. Ace's legs and knees were giving out from kneeling down, Paul's heart was acting up, etc.
2.) It was clear that the future didn't hold many more tours for KISS... they're getting old in age. So by filling the original roles, they pushed on for a few more years as the original classic KISS band. Tommy is no Ace by any means, but he fills in the part. Eric is not Peter or Eric Carr, but again he holds his own. Alive 35 euro-tour was most likely the last KISS tour, any future engagements are only appearances. Gene & Paul have plans for their future, I'm sure they all do.
If them "wearing out" is the issue then they should stop and leave us with good memories. I have no desire to see them wheeled out on wheelchairs. I'm left feeling flat by their apparent lack of musical artistic integrity. Seemingly living off the fat of songs produced when they were a real band and having no desire to make new music simply because it doesn't present a good business model. Did I miss a meeting where it was decided that that was the driving force behind rock music?
(cont) Surely all the great music in the world has been written and played from an unstoppable desire to express themselves musically and not simply to make a swift buck. Its not like Simmons needs the cash, and if it is, like he is always saying, "about the fans" then why not give the fans what they want which is some new music, again with actually him playing bass, PS playing guitar and the hired help doing their part, as opposed the case since 1979 where it seemed every session musician

That's what they want you to think. They want you to think that it's the originals, so you'll think you got away with a bargain. You're paying $100 to see The Ultimate KISS Tribute featuring Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley. Now, I'm friends with Tommy, but I don't think that he needs to wear Ace's makeup. Same situation with Eric. I don't think he needs to wear Peter's makeup. They could do their own characters. But, maybe they'll get Ace and Peter back again someday, but don't hold your breath.

I'm getting tired of reading things like that. Maybe Tommy doesn't need to wear Ace's make up but he also doesn't need to make his own make up and character. I think that Ace and Peter will never play with kiss again. Peter isn't fit enough. Compere his playing in 2003 to 1973-1978. During his last tour with Kiss, it sucked. And I think Ace doesn't want to play with Kiss anymore. look at him in this beth backstage video from 2000. He looked like a tired old man. but now he's doing great

Eric Carr was a damn good drummer, an integral part of kiss and a very nice guy. The only reason I didn't mention him was cos he wasn't the subject. My beef, if I really have one, is with being told that Kiss as they are now, are as viable a rock band as they were 74-78, when all they do is whore out the old stuff and don't write any new. And my point was that Kiss ARE a caberet Vegas show. It all seems to be done with smoke and mirrors and I prefer a bit more honesty.

Get over what? Its just how I see the reality of things as opposed to Simmons' twisted fantasy view. Your view of them being "fantastic entertainment" is fine but in my view that's only fine if they were some Las Vegas caberet show and not telling us that they're the best rock band in the world. Peter Criss perhaps wasn't the best drummer of all time, but he was still 25% of Kiss. Once he went the downhill slide started. New Album? I'll believe it when I see the playing credits.

I was a teenager in the 70's and well remember how Kiss had to make a record that sounded like disco to dance and Van Halen dance the night away just to get a song on the radio. Rock of Ages will rise and the bullshit music industry of sex sells, hip-hop,rap, so-called rock groups music will die out and ROCK WILL CONQUER ALL!

Considering Gene and Paul are both almost 60 years old, and the band in general has been active for over 35 years, that in itself speaks for itself. Very few bands are still the original lineup, whether change was made by leaving or death, being together and touring for that many years - worldwide - is an achievement. Gene might be out spoken but he's right, cheap skates who don't buy records and choose to steal them by downloading "Hot" music, is putting the record industry out of business.

I would have replied sooner, but I was in the hospital for two weeks. KISS from the beginning have been a rock n show band which included a Demon, Starchild, Space Ace, and The Cat. Those 4 positions are still being filled, and the stage show continues to explode. No band to this day has it's original members, at least KISS has it's original theatrical line up... . and they're playing the same music we all love and enjoy. When I first seen KISS I was 16 years old, now I'm 53. Rock on KISS..

Hope your hospital stay wasn't too unpleasant. I disagree with the rock and show bit. From the start they were a band and the sum of their individual parts made them the Kiss we all know and love. As soon as the four way dynamic was messed with that Kiss ceased to be. This is notable from Dynasty onward.

Replacing a band member is not simply a matter of filling out a role, but being an active contibuting member of the band. Robert Trujillo is not playing the part of Cliff Burton in Metallica, he is being himself and as such the two "imposters" in Kiss should not be masquerading as their superior counterparts. When Kiss produce a new album (yes, with Gene Simmons actually playing all his bass parts) then perhaps they can rise above being an elaborate tribute band but until then they remain so.

I do agree that filling a costume doesn't make you the original member, and I wasn't actually trying to imply that. But in KISS's case I can understand why they did. After the original group got back together for the farewell tour, etc, etc, etc, it was clear that two things were taking place.
1.) The band had done it all many times over. They were all nearing retirement age and getting tired. Ace's legs and knees were giving out from kneeling down, Paul's heart was acting up, etc.

2.) It was clear that the future didn't hold many more tours for KISS... they're getting old in age. So by filling the original roles, they pushed on for a few more years as the original classic KISS band. Tommy is no Ace by any means, but he fills in the part. Eric is not Peter or Eric Carr, but again he holds his own. Alive 35 euro-tour was most likely the last KISS tour, any future engagements are only appearances. Gene & Paul have plans for their future, I'm sure they all do.

If them "wearing out" is the issue then they should stop and leave us with good memories. I have no desire to see them wheeled out on wheelchairs. I'm left feeling flat by their apparent lack of musical artistic integrity. Seemingly living off the fat of songs produced when they were a real band and having no desire to make new music simply because it doesn't present a good business model. Well, all said and good. The ups and downs of the music industry, nothing has changed in decades. Bands who hit the top fade away after time, then younger groups come in. Even The Beatles only had a run of 5 to 6 years before they totally fell apart. But even like The Beatles, Elvis, and others, KISS will be making money off of fans for decades to come - they have a very large selection of records and videos. Elvis makes about 40 million a year, and he's been dead for over three decades..

i agree that they are not really high up there on todays metal charts as being considered the greats,
but then again metallica is not the "true kings of metal"

they may be one of the best thrash bands out there.
but to categorize them as being the true kings of metal your saying that bands such as Dimmu borgir, Lamb of God, Nevermore, and slayer are lessers to metallica.
