Great song about the social condition that most American's are forced to live under. Under capitalism the workingman is nothing but sheep to be herded around in order to make big profits for the few who control the profits (capital).
To these capitialists, we are all expendable.
Burger King recentl;y made enough profits that they could have given each one of their employees a bonas of $17,000.
But because the top bosses of Burger King are stinking, greedy Capitialists, they kept it all.
@gman8744 "uptown" a true masterpiece was one of the many pop songs of the times that had some latin influences coming in. especially in n.y. where latin dance styles were then somewhat popular among the youth. this was also the time and place where salsa began to develop
don`t know where you get the greek. unless it`s the guitar intro. that `s just a generic minor thing that could be from at least a dozen cultures. that`s my take. [ i`m a world musician who plays in many genres , loves this era`s pop music]
I love this, love Barbara's intro, what a voice, there are actually 6 Crystals on this song, as Myrna Girard did this before she left to have her baby, but her replacement La La Brooks came in and got on the song too, great huh? lol xxx
Wow. This is clearly the inspiration for "Downtown/Skid Row" from Little Shop of Horrors, right down to the hook and main melody. I always assumed the song was a reference to Petula Clark's "Downtown."
It's about a man who works downtown, tired and sad that he has to be there, feeling so small and unimportant but after he's done, he goes to see his girl uptown where they "they don't have to pay much rent" and he feels like a king with the world at his feet. It's indicative of the atmosphere that Phil Specter started his career as a songwriter.
@had1223 -It was a HIT,because it was indicative,of the life of "MOST" people, who go to work and are ' nothing ' they are the cattle that make the Big City, hum the way it does.Treated like what he is in the business world "Chump Change".But Then.......he gets on the subway, and goes 'Uptown'.Back in his Neighborhood, people know his name,he is respected, and well liked,he IS SOMEBODY.And to the girl that loves him,he is a KING.I'm a NYC boy,(was 15 when this came out),I sang it,...I WAS IT.

I have Little Eva's cover of this song -- interesting to hear the Cookies doing backing vocals. This is a great version.

I haven't heard Little Eva's in years , great version . Can you post it on Youtube?
redhookny 2 years ago 3
Will see what I can do on that. Some other uploads of Little Eva's less well known songs have been taken down by youtube, much to my dismay.
